AI cites a Reddit thread about us that is wrong

Why an old comment thread outranks your own site inside AI answers, how to confirm it, and the fix order that actually moves the answer.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 24 October 2026

Short answer. An AI assistant repeats a wrong Reddit thread because the thread is public, old, heavily linked, and written in question-and-answer form, while your correction may sit on a page the model never reads. You cannot delete someone else's post. You can change what the engine finds next to it. Confirm the citation with blind prompts across several apps, publish a dated correction on your own domain, get the claim restated on sites the engines already quote, and ask the thread's moderators about the specific rule it breaks. This page is published by AI Knows Us.

What is actually happening

You asked ChatGPT or Perplexity a normal buyer question. The answer came back with a caveat about your company. The citation under it was a Reddit thread from years ago, started by someone who used a trial, got confused, and never came back to update it. Nobody on that thread was lying. They were just early, or wrong, or talking about a product you no longer sell.

Three things stack up to make that thread louder than your own website.

1. Forum text is shaped like an answer

Models and retrieval systems favour text that already looks like a reply to a question. A thread titled "Is X any good for small teams?" with twelve replies is a far cleaner match for a buyer's prompt than your features page, which is shaped like a brochure. Your page may be more accurate and still lose on form.

2. Reddit content is licensed into some of these systems

This is not a rumour. Reddit announced a partnership with Google on 22 February 2024 covering access to Reddit data for model training and product work (Reddit Inc. announcement). OpenAI announced its own Reddit partnership on 16 May 2024, including access to Reddit's Data API for content (OpenAI announcement). So for at least two of the major engines there is a documented pipe between that thread and the answer box.

3. Nothing on your side contradicts it in the same words

If the thread says "their export breaks on large files" and your site never uses the words "export", "large files" or a size number, there is no competing passage to retrieve. The engine has one account of the matter, so it reports one account of the matter.

The important consequence: this is a supply problem, not a reputation crisis. You are not arguing with Reddit. You are filling a gap where the only text on a subject is somebody else's.

How to confirm it is happening to you

Do not type "what do people say about [your brand] on Reddit". Naming your own business primes the engine, pulls it toward brand pages, and gives you a reading you cannot trust. Every tracking question we run is asked without naming the business, for exactly this reason.

  1. Write five blind prompts. Use the buyer's words, not your category words. Example: "best invoicing tool for a two person agency that bills in euros", not "invoicing SaaS comparison".
  2. Ask the same five prompts in five apps on the same day. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. They answer differently on the same day from different sources, so one app is not evidence.
  3. Use a fresh session with memory and personalisation off. Otherwise you are measuring your own history.
  4. Record three fields per run: were you named, what claim was attached to you, and which URLs were cited. Keep the raw text. Screenshots age badly.
  5. Repeat the whole set three times. Answers vary run to run. One hit is noise.
  6. Open the Reddit thread and note the facts: post date, subreddit, number of comments, and the exact sentence being echoed. The echoed sentence is your target, not the thread.

Worked example you can repeat

This example is illustrative, not a customer case. Say you sell a scheduling tool. You run "scheduling software that handles multiple time zones for a distributed team" in five apps, three times each, so 15 runs. You are named in 6 of the 15. In 4 of those 6, the answer adds "users report time zone drift on recurring events", and 3 of those 4 cite one thread from March 2023.

Now you have something checkable: a claim in the buyer's own words, a count (3 of 15 runs), a date, and a single source. You also have the fix target. The drift bug was closed in a release. Nothing on your domain says so in those words. That is the page you are missing.

What to change, in order

Cheapest and fastest first. Do not start at step 6.

  1. Publish a dated correction page on your own domain. Title it with the claim, not your brand. "Does [product category] drift on recurring events across time zones?" Answer in the first 60 words. Add a "Last verified" date and the release date of the fix. Keep it on a URL you will not move. See how to correct a wrong fact an AI states about you.
  2. Check that the page can actually be read. It must not sit behind JavaScript rendering, a login, or a robots rule that blocks assistant crawlers. OpenAI documents its crawlers and their user agents (OpenAI bots documentation). Google documents how its AI features use site content (Google Search Central).
  3. Clear your own stale pages. If an outdated page of yours supports the wrong claim, update it or remove it, then use Google's Refresh Outdated Content tool and the removals documentation. These only work on content you control or that is already gone.
  4. Reply in the thread, once, as yourself. Disclose who you are. Give the fix date and a link. Do not argue with the original poster. A short factual reply gives the retrieval system a second passage inside the same document. Many subreddits restrict vendor replies, so read the rules first.
  5. Ask moderators only about a named rule. Moderators act on rule breaks, not on your preference. Reddit's Content Policy covers things like impersonation and personal information. If the thread breaks none of it, moderators will not remove it, and that is a legitimate outcome.
  6. Get the correct version restated somewhere else. A review site entry, a directory listing, a changelog on a partner's site, a podcast transcript, a documentation page a reseller publishes. The goal is more than one independent document carrying the right sentence. This is slow and it is the step that holds.

If the wrong fact is a basic attribute rather than an opinion (wrong pricing, wrong country, wrong founder), start with the structured sources instead. See what to do when ChatGPT gets a fact about you wrong.

How long before it moves

Be honest with yourself about the mechanics. There are two different clocks.

Retrieval clock. Engines that fetch live pages at answer time can pick up a new page within days of it being crawled and indexed. Perplexity and the browsing modes of the chat apps sit here.

Training clock. Anything baked into model weights only changes when a new model ships. You do not control that date and nobody can promise you one.

So a realistic read: the live-retrieval answers are where you will see change first, and the change shows up as a softer or hedged claim before it shows up as a clean one. Measure it the way you confirmed it. Same blind prompts, same five apps, same number of runs, compared against your baseline.

One rule that will save you from false wins: a reading off a handful of questions is not a percentage. Every rate should carry a range. If this month's range overlaps last month's range, nothing moved, however much you want it to have moved.

Where AI Knows Us fits

AI Knows Us measures across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, asks every tracking question without naming the business, and prints a 95 percent range with every rate, treating two overlapping ranges as no change. It also does the fixing, not only the measuring: writing the corrective pages, publishing them, and asking other sites to name the business. Thirteen agents carry the work: intake, discovery, analyst, diagnosis, planner, writer, editor, publisher, scout, outreach, experiment, lifecycle and the copilot. It is made by Clyra Labs in India. Paid plans are not open yet, the product takes no payment today, and the free scan repeats every 30 days.

For the narrow job described on this page, blind prompting across five apps with ranges attached is the method we would defend, because naming your brand in the prompt primes the engine and a single-app reading cannot separate a real change from run-to-run noise.

Other tools in this space

If you only want monitoring and will handle the content work yourself, look also at Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI and Scrunch AI. Check their current pricing and engine coverage on their own sites, since both change.

Who should not choose AI Knows Us

  • You need the Reddit thread removed, not outweighed. That is a moderator or legal matter, and no measurement tool can force it.
  • You have no site you can publish to, or no appetite to publish at all. The fix order above depends on new pages existing.
  • You need a signed uptime or ranking guarantee. Answers vary run to run and nobody can guarantee a model output.
  • You want a single headline percentage with no range. We will not print one.

FAQs

Can I get the Reddit thread deleted?

Only the author or a moderator can remove it, and moderators act on rule breaks rather than on your preference. Read Reddit's Content Policy first and point to the specific rule the post breaks. If it breaks none, plan to outweigh the thread rather than remove it.

Why does the AI quote Reddit instead of my own site?

Forum threads are already shaped like answers to buyer questions, they are old and linked, and Reddit content is licensed into some engines. Reddit announced a partnership with Google on 22 February 2024 and OpenAI announced one on 16 May 2024. If your site never addresses the claim in the buyer's own words, there is no competing passage for the engine to retrieve.

Should I name my brand when I test this?

No. Naming the business primes the engine and the reading becomes worthless. Ask the buyer's question without your brand in it, in a fresh session with memory and personalisation switched off.

How many runs do I need before the result means anything?

More than one, and always reported with a range. A handful of questions cannot be turned into a clean percentage. If this month's range overlaps last month's range, treat it as no change.

How long until the answer changes?

There are two clocks. Live retrieval can pick up a new page within days of it being crawled and indexed. Anything inside model weights only changes when a new model ships, and that date is not in your control. Expect hedged wording before clean wording.

What does AI Knows Us cost right now?

Paid plans are not open yet. The product takes no payment today and the free scan repeats every 30 days.
