How a new business can build a transparent Reddit presence: profile setup, subreddit rules, and a 30 day participation log

The rules check to run before you post anywhere, the log format, and an honest count of the communities whose rules we have checked.

The only safe way for a business to be on Reddit is to read each community's own rules before posting in it, disclose who you are every time you mention your own product, and keep a log of what you posted and where. There is no site wide ratio that makes self promotion acceptable, because the rules that matter are written per community and enforced by that community's moderators. As of 29 September 2026 the number of relevant communities whose rules we have checked and recorded under the protocol below is zero, and the named list is therefore empty. That is the honest figure and it is the one this page leads with. What follows is the rules check itself, the nine fields to record per community, the 30 day log format, the disclosure wording, and the dated evidence we hold about why an audit of your own visibility must never name your brand in the question.

The answer, first

Five statements.

Rules are local, so the check is local. Each community has its own rules page, its own posting restrictions, and its own definition of self promotion. A rule that is fine in one place will get you removed in another, and a summary of "Reddit rules" is not a substitute for reading nine or ten rules pages.

Our checked count is zero as of 29 September 2026, and the list is empty. We have not run this audit on our own account, so we publish no count of communities, no named list and no participation results. We would rather print a zero than a number nobody can check.

There is no defensible general ratio. You will read advice that says some proportion of your posts may be about your own product. We hold no measurement of that and we are not going to turn an informal norm into a rule with a number in it. The defensible position is per community: what does this community's own rules page say about self promotion, and what did the moderators say when you asked.

Disclosure is the cheapest protection you have. One sentence saying who you are and what you sell, in the comment itself, every time your own product comes up. It costs nothing and it removes the only accusation that actually gets accounts banned.

Participation is measured in what you did, not in what happened to you. The log below records your own actions, which you control and can count honestly. Upvotes and traffic are outcomes, and we publish no outcome figures because we have not measured any.

How it was measured

One. Build the candidate list of communities before you read any rules. Write down every community where your buyers plausibly talk about the problem you solve, from three sources you can name: the platform's own search for the problem in buyers' words, the communities linked from those threads, and the communities named in answers when you ask assistants where a problem like this is discussed, recorded with the date and the assistant. Then de duplicate and count. That count is your denominator.

Two. Record nine fields per community, before posting in it.

  • The community name and its full URL.
  • The date you read its rules.
  • Whether the rules mention self promotion, and the exact wording quoted.
  • Whether there is a posting restriction such as account age, karma, or a flair requirement, quoted.
  • Whether there is a dedicated thread or day for promotion.
  • Whether the rules require or forbid disclosure of a commercial interest, quoted.
  • Whether you contacted the moderators, on what date, and what they said.
  • Your decision: participate without promoting, participate with disclosed promotion, or do not participate.
  • The recheck date, because rules pages change.

Quote the wording rather than summarising it. A summary of a community rule is a new rule that nobody wrote, and it is how businesses get removed while believing they complied.

Three. Print the denominator arithmetic. Report the audit as a fraction with both numbers visible: communities whose rules you read, out of candidate communities identified, as of a date. If you identify 14 candidates and read the rules for 9, the line is 9 of 14 as of the date, with the 5 unread ones named. Then, separately, communities you decided to participate in, out of the 9. Two fractions, both with denominators, never a single percentage.

Four. Keep a 30 day participation log with eight fields per entry. This is the part that makes your presence defensible if anybody asks.

  • Date and time.
  • Community.
  • Whether it was a post or a comment, with the permalink.
  • Whether your own product was mentioned, yes or no.
  • If yes, the disclosure sentence you used, quoted.
  • Whether you were answering a question somebody asked or starting a thread.
  • Whether the content was removed, and the reason given if any.
  • Whether a moderator contacted you, and what was said.

Five. Use one disclosure sentence and keep it identical. Something as plain as: I work at the company that makes one of the tools in this area, so treat this as an interested opinion. Identical wording every time means you can point to a pattern rather than defending individual comments, and it is searchable in your own log.

Six. If you are also measuring whether any of this affects AI answers, measure it blind. Freeze 20 to 100 buyer questions in a versioned, dated file, with your brand name in none of them. Ask each three times per assistant on the same day and keep all three answers. Print the arithmetic: 20 questions times 3 repetitions times 3 assistants is 180 answers, so 6 answers naming you is 6 of 180 on the named dates. The reason the blind rule is absolute is measured: on 27 July 2026 two runs of the same 78 questions happened on the same day for clawlaw.in, the run whose wrapper named the brand came back ranking it first on almost every question, the blind run put the company second by breadth and absent altogether from the litigation due diligence questions it most wanted to win, and the first run was discarded because the only thing it had measured was our own prompt.

Seven. Log any claim about searching as a claim. In the aiknowsus.com audit of September 2026, Perplexity withdrew its own earlier statement when asked how many of the questions it had actually searched for, saying it could not honestly substantiate the claim that it had run a live search for each one, and in another batch that its claim to have searched all five was not adequately supported. Three separate batches produced that retraction.

What the numbers were

Communities whose rules we have checked and recorded under this protocol: zero, as of 29 September 2026. The named list is empty. No participation log exists, so there is no post count, no removal count and no outcome of any kind on this page.

What we refuse to publish instead. No site wide self promotion ratio. No "most subreddits allow" claim. No count of communities in any sector. No engagement or traffic figure. Each of those would look exactly like a measurement.

The nearest real fractions we hold, with their sector named. Both are from AI answer audits rather than from forum participation, and they are here because they are the honest nearest thing, not because they are about Reddit.

  • 0 of 6. Asked six questions about its own category with no brand named, Perplexity audited itself afterwards in September 2026 and reported that it had not cited or recommended aiknowsus.com in any of the six answers. Our own domain, in the AI visibility category. There was no position for us to hold.
  • 161 across 24 batches and 72 conversations. Across the whole aiknowsus.com capture of September 2026, the phrase recording that we were not cited appears 161 times in the engines' own self audits of their answers. Perplexity.
  • 1 of 18. Across eighteen blind commercial questions on 18 August 2026, ChatGPT made clawlaw.in the top source on exactly one. Legal research software sold in India, which is a different sector from both of the above and must not be mixed with them.

One further dated result belongs on a page about forums, because it is about how communities are read. Across the whole September 2026 capture, the domains cited most often by the assistants were their own documentation and the vendors' own websites, with a single well known review site far down the list. Forum threads were not the source set that decided those answers, in that capture, in that category.

What this cannot tell you

  • It cannot tell you which communities will accept you. Only their rules pages and their moderators can, and the answer changes.
  • It cannot give you a safe promotion ratio. No such number exists that we can measure, and publishing one would be inventing a rule for thousands of independent communities.
  • A participation log is a record of your actions, not of results. It cannot tell you whether any of it worked.
  • Our fractions above are from AI answer audits in two sectors, AI visibility tooling and legal research software in India. Neither is evidence about forum participation in your sector.
  • Nothing here promises a position in an AI answer, and forum activity is one of the least predictable inputs to one.
  • A removed post is data, not a verdict. Log it, read the rule again, and record what you changed.

Sources and change log

Sources. The rules check, the nine fields, the 30 day log format and the disclosure sentence are ours. The dated results come from the aiknowsus.com audit of September 2026, 24 batches and 72 conversations, and from the clawlaw.in programme recorded in Tier_1/GEO_BASELINE_RESULTS_2026-07-27.md and Tier_1/GEO_GAP_ANALYSIS_2026-08-18.md. Counts were produced by a script over the capture files rather than from memory, and they cannot be verified from outside until the captures are published. No community rule is quoted or paraphrased on this page.

Change log. 29 September 2026, first publication, stating a checked count of zero and an empty list. When the audit runs, this section will carry the candidate count, the named communities with their read dates, the two fractions with their denominators, and the 30 day log summary including every removal. If a community's rules change after we record them, the old row stays and the new one goes above it.

Common questions

Can we just post a link to our product in a relevant thread?

Only if that community's own rules allow it, and you disclose who you are in the same comment. Read the rules page, quote the relevant line into your sheet with the date, and if the rules are ambiguous, ask the moderators and record their reply. The cost of asking is a day. The cost of guessing is the account.

Should we use a company account or a personal one?

Whichever you use, the disclosure sentence does the work, not the account name. What matters is that a reader can tell in one line that you have a commercial interest, and that the same wording appears every time. Some communities have their own rule about company accounts, which is field three and four of the record above.

How many communities should we aim for?

Fewer than you think, and chosen by where your buyers actually discuss the problem rather than by size. What we can tell you is to publish the fraction rather than the ambition: communities whose rules you read out of candidates identified, as of a date. A real 9 of 14 is worth more than a claim of dozens.

Does being active in forums get us named by AI assistants?

We have no measurement that says so. In the September 2026 capture across 24 batches and 72 conversations, the most cited domains were the assistants' own documentation and vendors' own websites, with a well known review site far down the list. If you want to know what forum activity does for you, run the blind prompt set before and after, print both counts out of the same denominator, and accept that a change is not a proof of cause.

What do we do if a moderator accuses us of spamming?

Answer once, politely, with the log. Give the permalinks, the dates and the disclosure sentence you used, and accept the decision. The log exists for exactly this conversation, and a business that can produce one is treated differently from a business that cannot.

Is it worth answering questions where we cannot mention our product?

Yes, and it should be most of what you do. A useful answer with no product in it is also the answer most likely to be read later by somebody deciding whether your company knows the subject. Log it the same way, with the product mentioned field set to no.

What to do first

Write your candidate list today from the three named sources and count it. Then read the rules for the three communities closest to your buyers, quote the self promotion wording and any posting restriction into the nine field sheet with today's date, and decide participate or not for each one. Post nothing until those three rows are filled in, and start the 30 day log with your first comment.
