Ahrefs SEO Toolbar: what it does free, what needs an account, and five checks to run first

The Ahrefs SEO Toolbar is a free browser extension for on page checks, redirects, headers and country switched Google results, and this guide shows what each tier gives you.

The Ahrefs SEO Toolbar is a free browser extension from Ahrefs for Chrome, with versions for Firefox and Safari. It shows on page SEO details, indexation settings, redirects, HTTP headers and Google results for other countries without leaving the page you are on, and with a paid Ahrefs account it adds Ahrefs metrics such as Domain Rating to every page and search result. This guide covers what you get free, what needs an account, and five checks to run in your first ten minutes. Everything below comes from Ahrefs' own toolbar page, read on 12 October 2026.

What the toolbar does with no account

Ahrefs lists these as free features on its toolbar page. Treat the list as the tour of what is installed the moment you click Add to Chrome.

  • Content structure. Title, meta description, word count and heading structure for the page you are viewing, laid out so you can compare a rival's page with yours.
  • Google results in any country. Switch country, language and Google domain in one click, with no VPN. Ahrefs says no extra tools are required.
  • Outgoing links. Highlight every outgoing link on the page, filter by link type, check for broken or redirected links and export the list to CSV.
  • Indexation settings. Canonical tags, noindex and nofollow directives, hreflang links and sitemap and robots.txt rules in one panel.
  • Redirects and headers. Full redirect chains, including JavaScript redirects, plus the HTTP headers that carry SEO tags.

That is already a full technical checker. A copywriter can read how a competitor structures a page, and a developer can confirm that the canonical tag survived a release.

What a free sign in adds

Ahrefs says signing in, at no charge, unlocks more. According to the toolbar page, a free sign in gives you Domain Rating and URL Rating for any site, one click saving of URLs to lists from search results or open tabs, a comparison of raw HTML against rendered HTML for JavaScript powered sites, image accessibility checks showing alt text, titles and image URLs, a user agent switcher that simulates browsers, devices, operating systems and crawlers including Googlebot, and keyword ideas shown inside the search results.

The raw versus rendered comparison deserves a note of its own. If your titles and meta descriptions are written by JavaScript, the version a crawler first receives can differ from the version you see in the browser. The toolbar puts the two side by side. The user agent switcher is the quick way to ask the same question about Googlebot.

What needs a paid account

Ahrefs' paid metrics are the part that matters if you do link work or competitive research. The toolbar page lists Domain Rating, URL Rating, backlinks, referring domains, estimated organic traffic and keyword rankings as the key metrics, with a Metrics Bar that shows them on any page you visit, and a Core Web Vitals test on top. Inside Google results it adds metrics for each top ranking page and lets you export metrics for the top 100 results in one click, which is a fast way to judge how hard a query is. Inside Google Trends it adds search volume, keyword difficulty and traffic potential for a chosen country.

As of 12 October 2026 the toolbar page advertises Ahrefs metrics from USD 29 per month on its Starter plan. Check the pricing page before you budget, because plans change. For what Domain Rating means and how it is built, read Domain Rating, URL Rating and Ahrefs Rank explained.

Install it in two minutes

  • Open the Chrome Web Store, search for Ahrefs SEO Toolbar, and choose Add to Chrome. Firefox and Safari users find their versions through the links on Ahrefs' toolbar page. Ahrefs notes the Metrics Bar is not available on Safari.
  • Pin the icon to your toolbar so one click opens the panel.
  • Sign in with a free Ahrefs account to unlock the second tier of features.
  • Open the settings and exclude any URL or path where you do not want the Metrics Bar to show, for example your own admin pages.

Five checks to run first

1. Compare your page with the top three

Search your target query, open each of the top three results, and read title length, heading structure and word count in the panel. Write the numbers in one row each. The pattern, not any one number, tells you what the query expects.

2. Confirm what Google is told about your page

Open your own page and read the canonical, the robots directives and the hreflang links. A stray noindex left from a staging site is a common reason a page does not appear, and it takes five seconds to see.

3. Trace a redirect

Type an old URL and read the chain. More than one hop is worth fixing, and a chain that ends on a different page from the one you intended shows where link value is lost.

4. See the results your customer in another country sees

Switch the country and language and rerun your query. For a business selling in several markets this is the fastest way to see whether you rank where you sell. The routine for reading a search page is in free SERP checker: how to take a rank reading you can trust.

5. Check links on a page you control

Highlight outgoing links, filter to nofollow or broken, and export the list. This is the audit that is most tedious by hand and takes the toolbar under a minute.

Yes. Ahrefs describes the toolbar and its sign in features as free. The Ahrefs metrics layer, including the Metrics Bar, needs a paid Ahrefs account.

Which browsers does it support?

Chrome, Firefox and Safari, according to Ahrefs. The Metrics Bar is not available on Safari.

Does it show backlinks without a paid plan?

What the toolbar cannot show you about AI answers

Every number the toolbar produces describes a page and its links, the signals a search engine reads. A buyer who asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for a recommendation gets a written answer with no results page to inspect, and no extension sits on top of it. The same business can hold a strong Domain Rating and still go unnamed in the answer, because the assistant draws on sources such as reviews, directories and press. AI Knows Us puts the buyer's question to those assistants and records which businesses they name and which pages they cite, which is the view the toolbar was never built to give.
