AI visibility for a business in Birmingham: a national newspaper filled the slot a local source should hold

Twelve Birmingham readings of ChatGPT and Gemini on 15 and 16 October 2026: thetimes.com cited in three of them, third place on two, and no reading citing our own domain.

In Birmingham the engines reached for a newspaper. Across twelve Birmingham readings on ChatGPT and Gemini, run on 15 and 16 October 2026, eleven returned a source list and the most cited were get-found.co.uk on 3 readings, thetimes.com on 3, seocompare.co.uk on 2 and redeagle.tech on 2. Our own domain was not cited at all. A national newspaper sitting in a city's most cited sources is the thing to read carefully, because news and large publishers took only 2.5% of the 10,652 citations recorded in the wider market run. Neither London nor Manchester produced a publisher in its city sources. When an engine answers a Birmingham buying question with a national title, that is not a verdict on Birmingham businesses. It is a vacancy, and it is the clearest opening of the three British cities we measured.

Birmingham was one of ten cities in that run, 120 readings in total, and our domain is in none of them. Two engines produced every count here, ChatGPT and Gemini. Three of the five we normally watch sat this one out, so nothing above speaks for Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews. The reproducible exercise underneath it all, question set included, is what AI assistants actually cite across 597 readings.

Why a newspaper ends up answering a local buying question

An assistant assembling an answer uses what exists. When the pages that should sit in a local answer have not been written, it falls back to the largest general source that touches the subject, and a national title is usually the largest thing available. The counts show how shallow the Birmingham field was: first place on 3 readings, third and fourth on 2 each, and one of the twelve readings returning no sources at all.

Set that beside a settled question and the difference is obvious. developers.google.com turns up in 178 readings of the wider run; Birmingham's leading source turns up in 3 of 12. The first is an entrenched position and no amount of budget moves it. The second is an empty one, and the only thing standing in it is a page nobody has written yet.

There is a second reason this is good news. A national newspaper is not a competitor you can become. You cannot acquire its authority and you do not need to, because the slot it is filling was never its slot. It is the slot a capability page from a real Birmingham supplier should hold.

The order to fill the gap in

Birmingham's commercial base leans towards buyers who procure rather than browse: West Midlands manufacturing and its supply chain, professional services, construction and the public sector. Those buyers ask about capability, references and terms, and a procurement question only has an answer if somebody has written the capability down. So the order matters here more than the number of pages.

  • A capability page written as prose. The work you actually do, named the way a buyer names it, with the kit, the capacity and the standards you hold. Written as sentences, not as a downloadable PDF and not as a wall of logos, because a logo is a picture and a sentence is text.
  • Named references by sector and area. The kinds of customer you serve and the places they are, with the ones you have permission to name actually named. This is the thing a national title cannot supply about your business, and it is what a procurement answer needs.
  • When it was checked, and when it gets checked again. Every single one of the 102 build spec conversations wanted to know both of those things. Put them on the capability page itself, not only on the blog.
  • The method behind any number you quote. 99 of 102 asked for a disclosed methodology, and 68 of 102 asked for failures and negative results to be shown alongside the wins. A capability page that says what went wrong on a job and what changed afterwards is doing something almost nobody in this region does.
  • The entity behind it all. Registered company name and company number at Companies House, with the registered office, so a procurement team can confirm who it would be contracting with before it rings you.

The West Midlands question, which Birmingham asks differently

Birmingham sits in a region where the surrounding towns are named by buyers at least as often as the city is: Solihull, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, Sandwell and the wider Black Country. A page headed Birmingham and nothing else is answering a smaller question than the one being asked, while a page headed West Midlands and nothing else is too vague to be matched to anybody's town.

Write both levels. Keep a Birmingham page for the city and name the towns you genuinely serve on it, including where a travel or delivery charge changes. Then add a page for any town where you have real work, real references and something to say that is not already true of the city page, and none for a town where the only difference would be its name. Where this turns into a conversation about what to pay somebody to do it, the tiers and what each one actually charges are set out in what each tier charges and when a specialist costs more for a reason.

Two British details before you publish

If your pages collect enquiries, the handling of that data and the marketing permissions behind it sit under UK GDPR and PECR, so settle the consent wording on the form before the enquiries start arriving rather than after. And 64 of 102 build specs asked for the commercial interest behind a page to be disclosed on the page itself, which for a supplier page simply means saying what you sell in the same place you publish your evidence. A page that admits its own interest is trusted more, not less.

Filling the Birmingham gap: the questions that come up

Why was a national newspaper cited for a Birmingham question?

Because it was the largest general source available for that subject. thetimes.com was cited in 3 of the 12 Birmingham readings on 15 and 16 October 2026, while news and large publishers accounted for 2.5% of the 10,652 citations recorded across the wider run. A publisher turning up in a city answer points at a thin local layer rather than at a strong publisher.

So should we chase press coverage instead?

Press coverage is worth having on its own merits, and it is not the route to this slot. What the engine needed in Birmingham was a supplier describing its own capability for this region, which no journalist is going to write for you. Notice also how small the publisher share is: 2.5% of the citations recorded in the wider run, against a newspaper taking 3 of 12 readings here. Birmingham produced that result not because publishers are strong but because the local layer was almost empty.

Which Birmingham specific sources did get cited?

get-found.co.uk in 3 of the 12 readings, seocompare.co.uk in 2 and redeagle.tech in 2. The British market picture those sit inside, from 204 UK readings on 15 October 2026, is in the UK cut of 204 readings.

How many Birmingham pages is the right number?

Fewer than most people will sell you. One capability page, one Birmingham page, and one page per surrounding town where there is real work to describe. Past that the pages start competing with each other for the same answer, which costs you both of them.

How soon would we see this change?

The source list moves before the named answer does, because the sources are what the answer gets assembled from. Watch which domains and URLs appear, record them each round, and judge progress on the list rather than on whether your name has appeared yet.

The empty slot in the Birmingham answer

On 15 and 16 October 2026 the engines needed something to cite about buying this kind of service in Birmingham, found get-found.co.uk, seocompare.co.uk and redeagle.tech, and then reached for a national newspaper to fill the rest. The capability page that belonged in that list had not been written by anybody. Commercially we would like to write it, for you and for ourselves, and we should say so plainly: AI Knows Us sells the measurement and the pages that follow it, and our own domain appears nowhere in the eleven Birmingham readings that returned sources. That is the figure to hold us to when the next round is dated.
