AI visibility for Indian ecommerce brands: the declarations you already print are the product data
MRP, net quantity, country of origin and the returns window are the facts a shopper asks an assistant for, and Indian law already makes you publish them. Most stores publish them as a photograph.

An Indian online seller already publishes almost everything an assistant needs to recommend a product. It is on the back of the pack and in the compliance block at the bottom of the listing, because Indian law requires it there. Net quantity, the retail sale price as an MRP inclusive of all taxes, the manufacturer or importer name, the country of origin, the consumer care contact and the returns policy are the exact facts a buyer asks an assistant for, and in most Indian stores they are published as a photograph of a label rather than as text. That is the gap worth closing first, and the reason is countable. We logged 10,652 citations while reading ChatGPT and Gemini on 15 October 2026, and 85.6% of them pointed at a page the seller or its own agency had published. India supplied 189 of the 597 usable readings, and two of those cited us.
The declarations are the product data
Two sets of Indian rules already decide what a product listing has to say. The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 set the declarations that go on a pre packaged commodity and on the listing that sells it. The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 add what an online marketplace or seller has to display to the buyer. Read them as a content brief rather than as paperwork:
| What you must declare | The buyer question it answers |
|---|---|
| Net quantity, in the stated unit | How much do I get, and is the cheaper pack actually cheaper |
| Retail sale price as MRP, inclusive of all taxes | What does this cost me in rupees, all in |
| Name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer | Who actually makes this |
| Country of origin | Is this made in India or imported |
| Month and year of manufacture, packing or import | How fresh is the stock I will receive |
| Consumer care name, phone and email | Who do I call when it is wrong |
| Return, refund, exchange and warranty terms | What happens if it does not fit |
| Grievance officer name and contact | Is this seller accountable to anybody |
Every row is a fact you are obliged to know and most of them are a sentence long. Put each one in the HTML of the product page as text, in a labelled block a reader can skim, and your catalogue becomes quotable overnight. Three practical notes:
- A declaration inside a JPEG of the label satisfies a shelf and nothing else. Keep the label image and type the same values underneath it.
- If the price loads from a script after the page renders, treat it as a price a fetcher may never see. View source on a product page and search for the number.
- Mark the same values up as Product and Offer structured data, matching the visible text exactly. Markup showing a price the page does not show is a defect rather than an advantage.
Your own product name belongs to a marketplace
Search your own best selling product and you will usually find your Amazon.in, Flipkart, Myntra, Nykaa, Ajio or Meesho listing above your own site. Those listings are better indexed, better linked and often more complete than the page you built. An assistant answering a shopping question in India reads them for the same reason.
The measured position is encouraging though, because 85.6% of citations went to somebody's own website rather than to a directory, and review directories took 0.8%. So the brand site is the kind of source these engines use, when it exists in readable form and says something the marketplace listing does not. Three things make it worth reading:
- One canonical URL per product, with colour and size variants pointing at it rather than multiplying one product into a dozen thin pages.
- The full declaration block above, plus the specification in text: dimensions, materials, compatibility, care, and what is in the box.
- Your MRP and your selling price on the same page, with the date, so that when your marketplace listing runs a discount the assistant can see which number is the list price and which is today's offer.
Then keep the marketplace titles and specification fields current, because a stale listing is the version that gets quoted back at you. An Indian restaurant reclaiming its own name from an aggregator faces the identical problem in a different trade, and the pattern is worked through in winning your own name back from Zomato.
The category page, written for an Indian shopper
Indian buyers ask for a category with a constraint far more often than they ask for a product by name: a cotton kurta set under a rupee budget for a Delhi summer, a geyser for a Mumbai flat with low water pressure, a laptop bag that fits a fifteen inch machine on a Bengaluru commute. Those constraints are what produce named recommendations, and they are answered from category pages. Most Indian category pages are a grid of tiles with forty words of text above them. Keep the grid, add two opening sentences saying what is in the category and who each option suits, a short table of the real decision criteria, and a buying guide answering what a shop assistant gets asked. This work is sold under several names, and the landscape is mapped in what AI SEO actually means.
Where these figures come from
Two engines were read, ChatGPT and Gemini, on one date, 15 October 2026, in the United States, the United Kingdom and India. Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews were not part of it. Our product measures five surfaces; this dataset covers two, and the two are never merged into one sentence here. Retail was not read as its own industry either. The vertical questions in the run were worded generically, so the shares quoted above are whole run and market level figures. The full method is in what AI assistants actually cite across 597 readings, and the India cut, with the Indian domains the engines leaned on, is in Indian sources won the Indian questions.
An afternoon's work, in order
- Open three product pages and check that net quantity, MRP, country of origin and the returns window are in the text, not only in the label image.
- Compare the price on your site, your feed and your largest marketplace listing for ten products today. The one that disagrees is the one being quoted.
- Run a structured data test on those three pages and fix any mismatch between markup and visible text.
- Ask five constrained shopping questions in ChatGPT and five in Gemini, in rupees, naming no brand, and save every source cited.
Questions Indian online sellers ask about AI answers
Does the compliance block really help a product get recommended?
It is the densest set of checkable facts on the page, and it is already written. Net quantity, MRP inclusive of taxes, country of origin and the returns window answer four of the questions a shopper actually asks, so publishing them as text turns a legal obligation into the most quotable part of the listing.
An assistant quoted an old price for my product. Where does that come from?
From whichever source still carries it: a cached page, a marketplace listing, a stale feed or an affiliate page. Correct it at the source, then publish your current MRP and selling price in plain text with the date you checked. The dated page is the one that settles the next answer.
Should an Indian D2C brand put effort into review sites?
Keep the profiles accurate and spend the quarter elsewhere. Review directories were 0.8% of the 10,652 citations recorded on 15 October 2026, while 85.6% went to somebody's own site. Honest reviews on your own product pages are worth collecting, and India's IS 19000:2022 sets out the principles for publishing them properly.
My marketplace listing outranks my own site. Should I stop fighting it?
Fill the listing properly, because a buyer who finds you there still becomes your customer, and compete on depth, which is where a listing cannot follow. A listing cannot carry a full specification table, a size guide with real measurements or a care guide, and a shopper who needs those leaves the marketplace to find them.
Does a Merchant Center feed get me into AI answers?
A feed keeps your price and stock correct in the surfaces that read feeds, which is worth having on its own terms. Google states that a page has to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, so the crawlable product page is still the thing that makes you eligible.
Start with the label you already print
The thing worth taking from this is that Indian sellers are not short of product facts. The facts are printed on the pack, filed with the regulator and typed into a marketplace form, and they are missing from the only page the brand controls. Moving them into the product page is a morning of work per hundred products, and no Indian store will find cheaper content anywhere. We are not a neutral party here and 64 of the 102 build spec conversations said to print that on the page: selling this work is how we make our money. AI Knows Us puts constrained shopping questions to five assistants and reports which listing answered instead of yours.
