AI visibility for Indian professional services firms: the named specialism is the entity, not the firm

85.6% of the 10,652 citations we recorded across 597 ChatGPT and Gemini readings on 15 October 2026 went to somebody's own website, and a full service page gives an assistant nothing to file you under.

An assistant recommends a professional services firm it can file under something specific. "Audit, tax, advisory and compliance" is not a thing to be filed under, which is why the largest firm in a city is often the one an assistant cannot name. A named specialism is: transfer pricing documentation for Indian subsidiaries of Japanese manufacturers, GST litigation before the appellate authority, Ind AS first time conversion for a company heading to an IPO. Those sentences are retrievable. They also have to sit on your own domain, because when we read ChatGPT and Gemini on 15 October 2026 the source behind the answer was a page the firm or its agency had published itself in 85.6% of 10,652 citations. The India portion of that work was 189 readings, and two citations of our own site came out of it.

Why a full service page cannot be retrieved

Indian chartered accountants, company secretaries and consulting firms almost all describe themselves the same way, because the services genuinely are the same services. The result is a services page that reads identically across a thousand firms, and a model asked for help with a specific problem has nothing to separate them by. Specificity is the only lever, and the good news is that it costs nothing to use, because you already do this work.

Write one page per specialism, not one page per service line. The difference is the qualifier:

  • Not "international taxation" but withholding tax on payments to non residents, including the treaty positions you argue most often.
  • Not "insolvency" but conducting a corporate insolvency resolution process under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016, with the stages and who does what at each.
  • Not "statutory audit" but the first audit of a company that has just crossed the internal audit threshold under the Companies Act, 2013.
  • Not "FEMA advisory" but overseas direct investment reporting for an Indian company setting up a subsidiary abroad.

Each of those is a question a client types into an assistant in those words. Each one answered properly is four hundred words you could dictate in ten minutes. The five routes by which advisory work actually arrives, and what to build for each, are set out in consulting firm marketing, and this is the route that most Indian firms have no asset for at all.

The credential is the checkable number

102 of the 102 build spec conversations we ran asked for a date and a last verified, and 80 of 102 asked for a sample size. A professional firm has something better than a statistic: a registration that a reader can look up in a public register in under two minutes. Publish it as text, with the date you last checked it.

What to publishWhat it settles for the reader
ICAI firm registration numberThat the firm exists and is what it says it is
Peer review certificate and its validity dateThat the practice has been reviewed, and recently
IBBI registration of the insolvency professional in the firmThat the named person can actually take the appointment
SEBI registration number, where the service needs oneThat the advice is given under a licence
Years in practice, number of partners, number of qualified staffScale, stated as a number rather than as an adjective
Bench and forum you appear before, and the cityWhether you are the right firm for where the matter sits

Two habits make this work. Name the individual, not only the firm, because clients and assistants both retrieve people: one partner page per partner, with the specialism, the qualification, the year of admission and the matters they handle. And date everything. A certificate with no validity date on the page is a certificate a careful reader cannot use, and a purchase committee looking for reasons to shorten a list treats a missing date as one.

The advertising restriction is an advantage here

The ICAI code of ethics restricts solicitation and advertising by chartered accountants, and the Council's guidelines set out what a firm website may carry. Company secretaries work under a comparable restriction from the ICSI, and advocates under the Bar Council of India rules, which is a subject of its own and is covered in social media for law firms in India.

Read against the measurement, that restriction points the same way the data does. The pages an engine used were overwhelmingly plain pages on somebody's own domain, and the claims the build specs said they would accept were dated, sourced and specific. A page that explains a procedure, states a registration number and carries a last verified date is both the compliant option and the citable one. The page you are not allowed to write, the one full of superlatives and client logos, is also the one that was never going to be quoted.

The limits of the reading behind this page

One date, 15 October 2026. Two engines, ChatGPT and Gemini, named rather than summarised as AI. Three markets: the United States, the United Kingdom and India. Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews were not read at all, and although our product measures five surfaces, this dataset covers two and the difference is stated wherever a figure appears. Professional services were not separated out as an industry: the vertical questions were worded generically, which makes every share above a whole run or market level figure. The method and the per market breakdown are in what AI assistants actually cite across 597 readings, and the India cut, including the Indian domains the engines leaned on, is in Indian sources won the Indian questions.

Six pages, and a partner can dictate most of them

  • One page per specialism, titled as the client's question, with the procedure and the timeline in it.
  • One page per partner, with qualification, year, specialism and city.
  • A credentials page carrying every registration number above with a last verified date.
  • A fees page stating the basis: per return, per assessment year, per hearing, retainer, and what moves it. Figures in rupees where you can give them, the structure where you cannot.
  • A page on the thing clients get wrong most often in your specialism, written as guidance.
  • A plain page saying which matters you decline and who to go to instead.

Questions Indian CA and consulting firms ask about AI answers

Does publishing a specialism cost us the general work?

It brings in the specific work, which is the work with the higher fee and the shorter sales cycle, and the general enquiries keep arriving from referral as they always did. The firms an assistant can name are the ones it can describe in one sentence, so the page earns its place by being narrow.

Is a firm website allowed to carry all of this under the ICAI rules?

Factual content about the practice is the part a firm website is built for, and the Council's guidelines set the boundaries, so have the content read against them once before it goes up. Registration numbers, partner qualifications, procedures and fee bases are facts rather than claims, which is why this approach fits the restriction instead of fighting it.

Should we be chasing listings and review sites?

Keep the profiles accurate and put the quarter elsewhere. Review directories accounted for 0.8% of the 10,652 citations recorded on 15 October 2026, while 85.6% went to somebody's own website. For a firm under a solicitation restriction that is a convenient result, because the lever is a page you control and already have the facts for.

Our clients come entirely by referral. Why does this matter?

The referral still gets checked. A finance head given your name asks an assistant who you are before the first call, and what comes back is assembled from whatever is public. A credentials page with a registration number and a date turns that check into a reason to call you.

How do we publish fees when every engagement differs?

Publish the basis and the range in rupees: per return, per hearing, per assessment year, with the three things that move it. 102 of the 102 build specs asked for pricing in the reader's own currency, and a range with a date on it answers that question better than a contact form does.

The register entry you never put on your own site

Most Indian firms have a registration number, a peer review certificate and a list of forums they appear before, and almost none of it is on the website. It sits in a register, in a certificate in a drawer, and in the partner's head. Gathering it onto one page, with a date, is the shortest route from invisible to checkable, and it is also the page a client sends to their board. Our own position in this is commercial, and 64 of the 102 build specs told us to say so on the page rather than in a footer: this is the work we are paid for. AI Knows Us puts your clients' questions to five assistants and reports which firm the answer named.
