AI visibility for SaaS: the question set, the sources that decide it, and the pages to write

Software buyers research by asking questions. Here is what decides whether an assistant names your product, in the order worth fixing.

AI visibility for a SaaS product is decided by four things: whether the assistants can read your docs and pricing, whether your category claim is specific enough for a model to file you under, whether the review platforms and comparison pages carry your current facts, and whether a page on your site answers each buying question outright. SaaS is the category assistants are asked about most, because software buyers research by asking questions rather than browsing. This page covers the question set to track, the sources that decide the answer, and the pages to write first.

Why software is different from other categories

Three properties of SaaS buying change the work.

  • The buyer asks in sentences. Nobody types a two word query to choose a payroll platform. They describe their situation: team size, stack, compliance requirement, budget. That phrasing is exactly what triggers a live search and a named recommendation.
  • Independent review platforms carry real weight. G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, GetApp and Software Advice exist to be read when somebody is comparing, and they are structured, so they are easy for a model to lift a category and a rating from. We looked at whether that moves answers in do G2 and Capterra reviews change AI software recommendations.
  • Your documentation is public and factual. Docs pages are often the most quotable content a SaaS company owns, because each one answers a single question with a specific answer. They are usually also the pages nobody in marketing has ever looked at.

The question set to track

Five families cover almost all of the demand. Write them in your buyers' words, with your product name in none of them.

FamilyShape of the questionWhat it tests
Category with a constraintBest X for a team of 20 that needs SOC 2Whether your category claim and your compliance facts are both public
AlternativesAlternatives to the market leader for a mid market companyWhether you appear in the competitive set at all
Head to headProduct A compared with Product B for a specific jobWhether anybody other than you has written the comparison
Integration and stackWhich X works with our existing YWhether your integration list is readable text rather than a logo wall
Price and packagingHow much does X cost for 50 seatsWhether your pricing is on a crawlable page with numbers on it

Run each of those in two assistants, several times, and record who was named and what was cited. Our catalogue of the questions software buyers actually ask is in what buyers ask AI before choosing a SaaS company.

The five fixes that move a SaaS answer

1. Make the category claim specific. "Workflow automation for mid market insurance brokers" is an entity a model can file and retrieve. "Business productivity platform" is not. Use the same category wording on your homepage, your review platform profiles, your LinkedIn page and your docs index. One wording, repeated, builds one strong entity instead of three weak ones.

2. Put pricing on a crawlable page, with numbers. Price questions are the single most common trigger for a live search. A page that says "contact sales" gives an assistant nothing to repeat, so it repeats a competitor whose page has a number on it. If you cannot publish a list price, publish the structure: the unit you charge per, the tiers, what moves a quote, and the date you last reviewed it.

3. Claim and complete the review platform profiles. Category, sub category, integrations, pricing fields, and a current feature list. These profiles are frequently the first third party source a model finds about a software company. The submission steps are in how to get a software product listed on G2.

4. Treat your docs as content. Give every docs page a title that is the question it answers, put the answer in the first two sentences, and make sure the pages render server side. Then check robots.txt is not blocking the docs subdomain, which is a common accident because docs often sit on a different host and each host needs its own file. An llms.txt file on the docs host gives an agent a curated map of them.

5. Write the comparison pages yourself, fairly. If the only "X vs Y" page in your category was written by Y, that is the page getting cited. Write yours with a factual table, link to the competitor's own source pages, and date it. A reader who can tell you are being fair about somebody else will believe you about yourself.

Access, which is the cheapest thing on the list

Before any content work, confirm the assistants can reach you. OpenAI publishes its crawler tokens at platform.openai.com/docs/bots, and states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Check three things.

  • Your robots.txt, on every host you own, including the docs and help subdomains.
  • Your access log, filtered for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. A bot management rule at the CDN can override what the file says.
  • Whether your key sentences exist in the HTML. If pricing renders only after JavaScript, treat it as pricing the fetcher may never see.

The AI visibility for SaaS questions worth an answer

Which matters more for SaaS, my own site or review platforms?

Your own site decides whether there is a passage worth quoting. Review platforms decide whether anybody other than you says the same thing. Fetched answers lean on the first, and recommendation answers lean on the second, so both earn a place in the plan.

Do I need to publish pricing to be recommended?

Price questions are answered from pages that contain numbers, so a page without one rarely wins them. Publishing the pricing structure with a date, even without a list price, puts something quotable on the page and is a change most teams can make this week.

How long before a new docs page shows up in an answer?

Once a page is crawlable and indexed, searched answers can start using it within weeks. Answers written from model training move on the timescale of the next model, which is why third party presence is the longer game. Our timing test is in how long AI takes to pick up a new page.

Why does ChatGPT keep naming the market leader?

Usually because the leader is described by more independent sources, not because of anything on your own site. Closing that gap means getting your facts onto review platforms, trade press and comparison pages. We tested the pattern in do AI answers favour big brands.

Should a SaaS company publish an llms.txt file?

It is a cheap, useful addition for a product with real documentation, because it hands an agent a curated map of the pages worth reading. Google states separately that no new AI text file is needed for its own AI features, so publish it for the agents that fetch your docs and keep the main effort on access and quotable pages.

What to do first

  • Write the five question families above in your buyers' words and ask each one twice in two assistants, naming nobody.
  • Save every cited source. Get listed properly on the three most cited that you are missing from.
  • Check robots.txt on your main site, your docs host and your help centre, then read the access log for the AI crawler names.
  • Put your pricing structure and your integration list into crawlable text with a review date on each.
  • Write one page for each of the two questions where a competitor was named and you were not, with the question as the title and the answer in the first paragraph.
