Buying SEO from India: a guide for both kinds of buyer

An Indian business selling at home and an overseas business buying India priced delivery need different things from the same supplier list. How to tell which you are and buy accordingly.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 12 October 2026

There are three buyers in this search and they need different things from the same supplier list. An Indian business selling in India needs a team fluent in Indian results and Indian languages. An Indian business selling abroad needs writers who understand buyers in that market. An overseas business buying India based delivery needs quality control and a contract that works across borders. Work out which one you are, because it decides which questions matter and which supplier is right.

Below: the three buyers, how Indian supply is arranged, the language question, engagement models, cost drivers, cross border quality control, the first call, red flags and measurement.

How Indian supply is arranged

Capability clusters by city, and knowing the pattern shortens your search. Mumbai and Delhi NCR hold the largest agency populations and the deepest experience in consumer categories. Bangalore and Pune lean technical and product, with strong software and B2B work. Noida and Greater Noida are production centres, where much of the content, link and technical delivery sold from elsewhere is actually made. Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Jaipur, Indore and Coimbatore all have capable independents, often at lower cost and with less sales polish.

Cutting across that is one distinction that matters more than geography: whether a firm's recent work sits in Indian results or Western ones. Both are real businesses. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake here, so ask for last year's work and see where it lives.

Language is the domestic advantage

India searches in many languages, and in Indian languages typed with English letters. For a domestic consumer business, that is where the least contested demand sits. Ask for native writers rather than translation, for the list of languages the firm has actually published in, and for Business Profile content and review replies in the same language as the customer. For a B2B or software business selling in English, keep the scope in English and spend the budget on depth instead.

Engagement models

  • Fixed project. Audit, migration, schema, a rebuild of key pages. The right way to start with any new supplier, in any country, because scope and acceptance criteria are written down.
  • Monthly retainer. The standard for continuous work. Ask for a named deliverable list each month rather than a bundle of hours.
  • Dedicated resource. One or more people assigned to you, billed monthly. Common for overseas buyers and effective when you manage the priorities yourself.
  • Day rate advisory. Senior direction for a team that executes. Cap the days and name an approver.
  • White label. An agency elsewhere reselling Indian delivery. A legitimate model. If you are the end client, ask who produces the work, and if you are the reseller, agree what is said to your client.

What drives the price

  • Seniority mix. The strongest predictor of both cost and quality. Ask how many hours of the senior practitioner are in the plan.
  • Target market. Competing in the US, UK or Gulf markets takes more depth and more authority work than competing in India.
  • Content volume and language count. Usually the largest line, and each extra language adds to it.
  • Category competitiveness. Education, lending, insurance, healthcare and real estate are contested by large budgets in India.
  • Technical debt. An old platform and slow templates become engineering hours before content earns anything.
  • Account management overhead. Cross border engagements carry real coordination cost. Priced openly it is fair; hidden, it is where quality quietly drops.

Making a cross border engagement work

This is the section for overseas buyers, and domestic buyers benefit from most of it too.

  • Buy a sample before you buy scale. Pay for two pages or one audit. Judge the real output rather than the pitch deck.
  • Name the writers. Ask who writes, see their work, and ask to be told when that changes.
  • Give them a standards document. Tone, spelling convention, what may never be claimed, who signs off, and examples of pages you like. One page of this prevents most rework.
  • Keep a review gate. Nothing publishes without your approval for the first quarter. Loosen it once the output earns trust.
  • Agree an overlap window. Two or three hours of shared working time, a standing weekly call, and a short written update every week.
  • Settle the commercials. Currency and payment terms, a registered entity and proper invoices, a statement of work with the deliverables, confidentiality that also binds subcontractors, ownership of content, code and documentation, your accounts staying in your name, and a named escalation contact with a response time.

The first call

  • "What did you notice on our site before this call?" Good: concrete and checkable. Weak: a description of their process.
  • "Who does the work, and where do they sit?" A straight answer about subcontracting is a good sign, not a bad one.
  • "Show me two live pages from the last year in my market." Pages, not screenshots.
  • "How do links get built, exactly?" You are listening for outreach, digital PR or editorial relationships, and against bought placements at volume.
  • "What do you need from us each month?" Approvals, expert interviews, developer time, and a named owner on your side.
  • "Tell me about a client where it did not work." The best firms answer this best, because they have diagnosed their own misses.

Red flags

Google's guidance on whether you need an SEO is direct: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a 'special relationship' with Google, or advertise a 'priority submit' to Google." It also warns about secrecy over methods, unsolicited sales email, firms that want links back to themselves, and link schemes.

  • A tiered package price list, sent before anybody looked at your site.
  • Links sold by the hundred, guest posts on networks of unread sites, or directory submissions as a deliverable.
  • A fixed article quota with no statement of who each article is for.
  • Reporting on positions for phrases with no demand behind them.
  • Unwillingness to name the people doing the work, or the production location.
  • A long term with no notice period and nothing due in month one.

Measuring the work

Take the numbers from your systems, not the supplier's dashboard. For most businesses: organic revenue or qualified enquiries, organic clicks to the pages that make money, and indexed coverage of newly shipped pages. For a domestic consumer business, add calls and direction requests per Business Profile. Group pages by the month they shipped and track them forward, because monthly totals hide which work is compounding. Review monthly against the deliverable list, quarterly against the numbers, and judge month one on the quality of the diagnosis.

Asked and answered: Buying SEO from India

Is Indian SEO work lower quality?

Quality tracks the seniority you buy and the control you keep, in every country. The best Indian teams match the best anywhere, and the way to reach them is a paid sample, named writers and a standards document, rather than choosing on price.

How do I handle the time difference?

Agree a fixed overlap window and a standing weekly call, and insist on a short written update so progress does not depend on being awake at the same time. Many Indian firms already run evening shifts for Western clients.

Should I hire a firm in my own country that outsources to India?

It is a reasonable choice when you want one accountable counterpart in your own time zone and are comfortable paying for that layer. Ask who produces the work either way, since the answer may be the same team you could hire directly.

What should the first engagement be?

A paid audit or a two page content sample with acceptance criteria. You keep the output whatever happens next, and it becomes the scope for the retainer or for a different supplier.

Which buyer is asking, and in what language

If you are an Indian business selling at home, your buyer asks an assistant in an Indian language. If you are overseas and buying India priced delivery, your buyer asks in English from another country. The same supplier list serves both, and the assistants answer each buyer differently.

Know which buyer you serve, then check it: ask your category question the way that buyer would, in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and see who is named. Make the supplier explain the result. AI Knows Us can run that question in several assistants and languages, listing the sources, so the two kinds of buyer can each be checked.
