Digital marketing in Chennai: seven decisions to make before you brief a single agency
Settle language, catchment, channel, budget, measurement, ownership and commitment first. Agencies in Chennai quote far better against a brief than against a conversation.

Most disappointing agency engagements in Chennai are decided before the agency is hired, in the gap between a vague conversation and a signed retainer. Seven decisions close that gap, and you can make all of them in an afternoon without any outside help. Work through them in order, write the answers on one page, and send that page to four firms. You will get quotes you can actually compare, and the fees will make sense: roughly INR 20,000 to 45,000 a month for a consultant or small studio in this city, INR 45,000 to 1,25,000 for a mid sized agency across several channels, more for national work, with 18 percent GST on top.
One: decide what one number has to move
Not traffic. Enquiries a month, qualified enquiries, bookings, orders, or site visits if you sell property. Write the current figure and the figure you want. Half the agencies you speak to will propose a different metric; that is fine, but they should have to argue against yours rather than replace it quietly. If you cannot state a current figure because nobody counts, that is your first purchase, and it is a week of work, not a retainer.
Two: settle the Tamil question, once
This matters more in Chennai than in most Indian cities and it is cheap to resolve. English carries search for business buyers, technology, exports and most of the professional services market here. Tamil earns its place where consumers decide: social video, review replies, your Google Business Profile description, WhatsApp communication, and landing pages for offers aimed at the broader city and the districts beyond it. Written Tamil has to be written by somebody who writes Tamil, because machine translated pages read badly to exactly the people you are trying to persuade. Decide which of your pages are English only, which are both, and who approves the Tamil. Then it never comes up again. Our page on settling the Tamil question first goes into this in more depth.
Three: define your catchment honestly
Chennai is several markets. A business in T Nagar, one in Velachery, one in Anna Nagar and one on OMR serve overlapping but different populations, and the IT corridor behaves differently again. Decide whether you are selling to a few kilometres, to the whole city, to Tamil Nadu, to India, or abroad, because each answer produces a different plan and a different price. If you have branches in Adyar and Porur, that is two Google Business Profiles and two real location pages, not one page with two addresses. If you are an exporter or a manufacturer in Ambattur or Sriperumbudur selling to buyers overseas, say so in the first line of the brief, because the agency's local playbook will be wrong for you.
Four: pick the channel you are buying, and the one you are not
A Chennai retainer is usually some mix of search optimisation, paid search, paid social, social media management, content and creative production. Buying all of them at INR 40,000 a month means buying none of them properly. Pick one or two and say which. A short guide to matching channel to situation:
| Situation | Buy first |
|---|---|
| Local service business, few or no reviews, weak map presence | Local search: profile, reviews, area pages |
| You need enquiries this quarter and have budget for media | Paid search on high intent phrases, then paid social |
| Steady business, want cheaper leads over time | Search optimisation and content, with a six to nine month horizon |
| Consumer brand, product is visual, repeat purchase | Paid social and creative production, with a content calendar |
| Selling to businesses or abroad | Pages that answer procurement questions, plus LinkedIn around named people |
Five: separate the fee from the media budget
This is the most common source of argument in the first month of a Chennai engagement. Say plainly what you can pay the agency and what you can spend on ads, as two numbers. If a firm proposes a percentage of ad spend as its fee, which is usually 10 to 20 percent of media, cap it and ask what the fee becomes if you halve the spend next quarter. The fee bands on this page are a working read of what Chennai agencies publish on their sites and packages and of how the market is shaped, not a survey; they are there to help you spot a quote that is far outside the market and ask why.
Six: decide who owns what
Settle this before money changes hands, because retrieving it afterwards is slow. Your Google Ads account, Analytics, Search Console, Business Profile, domain, hosting and creative source files should all sit in your company's name with the agency added as a user. Decide who on your side approves copy and who can deploy website changes, and name both people in the brief. A surprising share of Chennai retainers stall in month two because nobody on the client side was authorised to publish a page.
Seven: choose the commitment length, with a checkpoint
Three months tells you whether a firm works the way it said it would. Six to nine months is where search and content investment usually starts showing in enquiries. Put a ninety day checkpoint in the agreement with named deliverables so you are judging progress instead of waiting, and negotiate any twelve month lock in down to a break at that checkpoint. For paid media, you will have a readable signal in three to four weeks.
Running the shortlist once the brief is written
- Send the same one page to four firms. Variation in what comes back is information.
- Ask who does the work, by name and role, and meet them on the second call rather than the sales lead.
- Ask for two clients in a comparable situation and what specifically changed, then look at those sites yourself.
- Check the Ministry of Corporate Affairs register against the address on the site. One minute, occasionally revealing.
- Read their own website. A firm whose own content stopped two years ago is telling you something.
- Walk away from a promised ranking position or a lead count guaranteed in a named month.
What Chennai businesses ask before signing a digital marketing contract
Does the agency need to be in Chennai?
For delivery, no. For a business selling into the city, local knowledge genuinely helps with creative, language and timing around the festival and school calendar. For a manufacturer or exporter, sector experience matters more than city.
What is a realistic minimum monthly budget?
Around INR 20,000 a month for one objective pursued properly. Below that, buy a fixed project with an end date instead of a retainer and finish it.
Why are two Chennai quotes for my brief so far apart?
Nearly always hours and seniority. Ask each firm how many hours of whose time the fee represents, and the gap usually explains itself in one sentence.
Should I hire in house instead?
If you need somebody who understands your product deeply and will sit in sales conversations, yes, and pair them with a consultant for a few hours a month. Compare the full cost of the hire, salary plus tools plus the months before they are productive, against a retainer.
How much reporting should I expect?
One dashboard you can open yourself and a short written note each month on what changed, what it produced and what is next. If reports and audits dominate the deliverable list, the retainer is funding paperwork.
Can one agency handle Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai together?
Yes, and it is usually better than three suppliers, provided the plan treats them as separate catchments with their own profiles, pages and creative rather than one Tamil Nadu campaign.
An eighth decision, which almost nobody in this city has made yet
There is now a version of your category question that gets answered without a search results page at all. A buyer asks ChatGPT or Gemini for the best firms of your kind in Chennai and receives three or four names with a sentence each, built from what has been published about those businesses. It is worth asking it about your own category before your next agency call, both to see whether you appear and to see whether the agencies you are considering do. Deciding to take that seriously, early, is cheap right now in a way it will not stay. AI Knows Us is built around that eighth decision: finding the questions Chennai buyers put to an assistant, and working on why the answer names somebody else.
