Keyword rank tracking: what a position really measures now, and how to build a ranking report that holds up

Why two people searching the same phrase see different results, what Search Console's average position actually is, and a reporting format that reads movement instead of noise.

A keyword ranking is not one number any more. The results page for the same phrase differs by city, by device, by language and by the mix of features Google puts above the links, so a tracker reporting "position 4" is reporting position 4 under one specific set of conditions. The honest method is three layers: use Search Console's average position as the ground truth for your own site, use a rank tracker with a fixed location and device for movement and for comparison with competitors, and look at the actual results page by hand once a month to see what sits above you. Then report clicks and conversions as the outcome, because that is the number a position is supposed to produce.

Looking for how to take a single clean reading of where you rank today? That is covered in how to check keyword rankings. This page is about the reporting you build on top of those readings.

This page covers what a rank measures, how to track it, and how to report it. For the work that moves a position, see guides to on page SEO and to link building.

Why two people see different results

  • Location. Google localises heavily, and not only for obviously local searches. A phrase like "accountant" or "best crm" returns different results in Leeds and in Mumbai.
  • Device. Mobile and desktop are separate result pages with different feature mixes and different amounts of space above the first link.
  • Language and country settings, which change both the ranking set and the interface.
  • Features above the links. An AI Overview, a local pack, a shopping row, images, videos or People Also Ask can push the first blue link a long way down. The ordinal position is unchanged while the visibility is not.
  • Personalisation and recent activity, which is why checking your own site in your own browser is the least reliable measurement available to you.

The practical consequence is that you should fix your tracking conditions and never change them. A set of positions measured at mobile, in one named city, weekly, is a usable time series. The same set measured in whatever browser you happen to have open is not.

What Search Console's average position actually is

It is the average of the highest position your site held, counted across the impressions you received for that query or page, over the date range you selected. Google sets out the definitions in its note on impressions, position and clicks. Two things follow.

  • It is a real average across real searches in real places, which makes it a better description of your situation than any single sampled check.
  • It moves when your impression mix moves. Starting to appear for a broad new query in a weaker position pulls the average down even though nothing you already ranked for got worse. So read position next to impressions and clicks, never on its own.

Filter by query, by page, by country and by device, and compare the same twenty eight days against the previous twenty eight. That one habit answers most ranking questions without any other tool.

Paid trackers are the right tool for layers two and three at scale. The main vendors publish their own prices: Semrush, Ahrefs and Moz. One point worth knowing: automated querying of Google is named in Google's spam policies under machine generated traffic, which is a good reason to use an established tool rather than building your own scraper.

Choosing the query set

  • Twenty to fifty queries, chosen once. A tracked set that changes every month cannot show a trend.
  • Commercial intent first. The phrases somebody types when they are ready to buy, not the ones with the biggest volume.
  • One target page per query, written down. If two of your pages compete for the same query, that is the finding, and it is a content problem rather than a tracking one.
  • Include the queries you already win, so a loss shows up early.
  • Add the branded set separately. Branded and non branded movement mean completely different things and should never be averaged together.

A ranking report that survives a second reading

Lead with buckets rather than with individual positions, because buckets describe the portfolio and single numbers describe the noise.

Tracked set: 40 non branded commercial queries
Conditions: mobile, Manchester UK, weekly, same tracker This month Last month Change
Positions 1-3 6 4 +2
Positions 4-10 13 11 +2
Positions 11-20 12 15 -3
Positions 21+ 9 10 -1 Organic clicks to the 40 target pages: up 18 percent
Key events from those pages: up 11 percent Biggest gains: [query] 14 to 6, after the page rewrite on 12 Sept
Biggest losses: [query] 7 to 12, AI Overview and three ads now above

Then one page of detail: query, target page, position, change, clicks, and a note on what you changed. Always print the conditions at the top, because the conditions are what make the numbers comparable month to month.

The keyword rank tracking questions worth an answer

Why does my tool show a different position than I see in my browser?

The tool is measuring one fixed location and device with no personal history. Your browser is measuring your own street, your own device and your own search history. Trust the tool for trends and Search Console for where you really stand.

How often should I check rankings?

Weekly is plenty for reading movement, and daily tracking is useful during a migration or a known Google update. Report monthly, because day to day movement on a single query rarely means anything you can act on.

Is average position in Search Console the same as a ranking?

It is the average of where you appeared across real searches, which is a different and more useful measurement than a single sampled check. Read it with impressions and clicks beside it so you can tell a genuine drop from a widening set of queries.

How many keywords should I track?

Twenty to fifty for a focused site, a few hundred for a large catalogue, organised into groups by page or by product line. Report the group, not the list.

Is rank tracking still worth doing?

Yes, as a leading indicator. Positions move before clicks accumulate, so a tracker tells you a page is working two or three weeks before the traffic shows it. Keep clicks and conversions as the scoreboard and let positions be the early warning.

Can I check rankings for free?

Search Console gives you your own positions, queries, pages, countries and devices at no cost, which covers your own site completely. Competitor positions need a third party index, and that is what you are paying for in a tracker.

One position no tracker reports yet

A rank tracker reports where your page sits among ten blue links. An assistant does not produce ten links. It produces a paragraph with a few names in it, and the position that matters there is whether you are in the paragraph at all.

Treat it as another tracked query set. Choose the phrases from your report that carry revenue, ask each in plain words, and log presence, order of mention and cited pages. Movement over weeks reads better than any single snapshot. AI Knows Us keeps that log, so the second reading of your ranking report has a companion.
