Learn digital with Google: what the free training covers and the order to take it in

The four separate Google training programmes, which one fits which goal, and what to do after the certificate so the learning turns into skill.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 12 October 2026

Google runs four separate free training programmes and people lose time by picking the wrong one. Grow with Google holds the general digital skills courses, including the digital marketing fundamentals course that has carried accreditation from the Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe and The Open University. Skillshop holds the product certifications for Google Ads, Analytics and Merchant Center. Google Career Certificates are the longer paid programmes delivered through Coursera. Google Search Central is the official documentation for search itself. Start with the fundamentals course, then take the one Skillshop certification that matches the work in front of you.

The courses are genuinely good and genuinely free, and the certificate is not the point. What makes somebody employable is a live account they have run and a result they can describe. The order below is built so that each course is immediately applied to something real.

Digital Garage is the name many people search for. It is Google's digital skills training brand, and the courses it carried now sit under Grow with Google, so start there and you will find them.

What the fundamentals course actually covers

The digital marketing fundamentals course is a broad tour rather than a deep course in anything. It covers how search works and the difference between organic and paid, the basics of running a search campaign, display and video advertising, social media, email, ecommerce, analytics and measurement, and building a simple web presence. Each module is short, with a quiz, and there is an exam at the end for the certificate.

Its real value is vocabulary and a map. After it, a conversation about impressions, match types, bounce rate, attribution and conversion tracking stops being a wall of jargon, and you know which part of the subject you want to go deeper on. The accreditation is why it carries weight on a CV in Europe.

The order that turns courses into skill

  1. Take the fundamentals course first, in a week rather than over three months. Momentum matters more than note taking.
  2. Get a real property to work on before anything else. Your own site, a family business, a club, a charity. Every step after this needs somewhere to apply it.
  3. Set up the free measurement. Verify the site in Search Console, install Analytics, define one conversion. Do this before any campaign, because an account with no conversion tracking teaches you nothing.
  4. Choose one specialism and take its Skillshop certification. Google Ads Search if you are heading towards paid. Google Analytics if you are heading towards measurement. Do not collect all of them.
  5. For organic search, read the official documentation rather than a course. The SEO starter guide and Google's own page on whether you need SEO are short, free, written by the people who build the system, and more current than most paid courses.
  6. Run something small with real money. A modest budget on a search campaign for a real business teaches more in two weeks than a month of modules, because the feedback is immediate and specific.
  7. Write up what happened. One page: what you changed, what the numbers did, what you would do differently. That page is what gets you hired.

What to add once the Google courses are done

Google's training covers Google's own surfaces thoroughly, which is most of the ground and not all of it. Four areas are worth adding from elsewhere:

  • Copywriting. The skill that pays back fastest in digital marketing, and it is not a module in any platform course.
  • Technical SEO beyond the basics. Crawling at scale, rendering, site architecture, log files. Pick a crawler and learn it on a real site.
  • Spreadsheets and basic SQL. Everything above produces data, and the people who can join two exports together get the interesting work.
  • Channels Google does not sell. Email, organic social, affiliates, marketplaces and retail media each have their own mechanics.

This page covers choosing and sequencing the training. If you want the shortest route into organic search specifically, start with SEO basics and your first week, and for the tools side see the Search Console reports that matter.

What people ask about learn digital with Google

Is the Google digital marketing certificate worth anything to an employer?

It is worth a first look, not a job offer. Recruiters treat it as evidence that somebody has learned the vocabulary and finished something, which clears the first filter. What moves an application forward is a live account, a site you have improved, or a campaign you can talk through. Take the certificate and build one of those in the same month.

How long do the free courses take?

The fundamentals course is designed to be finished in short modules over a few weeks, and most people who sit down with it get through it faster. Individual Skillshop certifications are much shorter, usually a study session and an exam. Career Certificates are a multi month commitment.

Do Google certifications expire?

Skillshop product certifications are time limited and need retaking, which is reasonable because the products change. The broader course certificates do not expire. Diarise the retake for any certification you list publicly, so the badge on your profile stays current.

Is Digital Garage still available?

The training is, under the Grow with Google brand, and the course catalogue is reached from there. If a link to an old Digital Garage address fails, search the Grow with Google catalogue for the course name instead of the brand name.

Which single course should I take if I only take one?

Google Ads Search certification, if you expect to work in a marketing team. It is short, it is specific, it maps onto a job that exists, and the knowledge is immediately checkable in a live account. Pair it with Search Console for the organic side and you can hold a competent conversation about both halves of search.

One part of the syllabus that has not been written yet

Google's courses cover search, analytics, ads and measurement, and they will earn you a certificate. None can teach you how assistants choose the businesses they name, because the answer is still being worked out in public.

You can learn it by doing, and it fits the portfolio advice above. Pick a small business, ask the assistants what they say about it, and write up the sources and the gaps. A document like that shows initiative. AI Knows Us is one place to gather the evidence for such a write up.
