Marketing agency in Mumbai: five different businesses, one phrase, and a map that tells them apart

Where each kind of Mumbai shop sits, how five categories read the same brief, what the city charges, and the five lines to settle before you appoint anybody.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 14 October 2026

Send the same two line brief to five firms that all describe themselves as a marketing agency in Mumbai and you will get five different proposals, because the phrase is covering five different businesses. One is a brand and creative shop. One is a media agency that plans and buys print, television and outdoor. One is a performance team that lives inside ad accounts. One is a social and influencer outfit. One is a studio that makes things on order. The useful first step in this city is deciding which of those you want, because Mumbai has depth in all five and will happily sell you any of them.

In Mumbai the address is a clue to the trade

No other Indian city sorts its marketing suppliers by geography quite as clearly, and knowing the map saves a fortnight of meetings.

  • Lower Parel and the mill compounds around Kamala Mills and Todi Mills hold a dense cluster of brand, creative and design firms, along with the newer independents.
  • Bandra Kurla Complex is where the network offices and the large media planning and buying operations sit, next to the client marketing departments that brief them.
  • Andheri East, the MIDC stretch and the roads around Marol are production country: film production houses, post and edit studios, sound, photography and casting.
  • Goregaon and Film City add the stages and the crew base, which is why a Mumbai campaign can be conceived and shot inside one postal code.
  • Powai, Andheri West and Malad carry a lot of the digital performance and social shops, many of them small and fast and working for consumer brands.
  • Fort, Ballard Estate and Nariman Point still hold communications and public relations firms, with the financial and listed company work they have always done.

If your brief needs a camera, a crew or a media plan, buying in the right part of the city shortens everything. If your brief is a website and a paid search account, the address is almost irrelevant and you should optimise for the team instead.

The same brief, read five different ways

Say the brief is: we are a Mumbai home furnishing brand with four stores, sales are flat, help us grow. Here is what each category hears.

CategoryWhat they proposeWhen that is the right answer
Brand and creativeRepositioning, a new identity, a campaign idea and a filmShoppers cannot tell you apart from the shop next door
Media agencyAn outdoor and print plan across the western suburbs, with a radio layerYou have a clear message and need reach in defined catchments
Performance and growthRebuilding paid search and paid social against a cost per orderPeople already want what you sell and are buying it elsewhere
Social and influencerA content calendar, reels and a roster of Mumbai creatorsThe purchase is visual and discovery happens on a feed
Design or production studioCatalogue, store graphics, photography, a working websiteYou know the plan and simply need the assets made well

None of those five is wrong. Four of them are wrong for any one brief, and that is the whole decision.

Three Mumbai situations and the category each one needs

  • A financial services firm in BKC selling to businesses. Start with content and search, add a communications firm for founder and product visibility, and keep paid media small and tightly targeted. A creative retainer here mostly produces decks.
  • A direct to consumer brand in Andheri doing most of its sales online. A performance team is the core purchase, with a studio for the volume of creative that paid social consumes. Why two performance quotes for this brief can differ by several times over is taken apart in our page on Mumbai digital marketing quotes.
  • A developer launching a residential project in the suburbs. This is a media and activation purchase above everything else: outdoor on the right arterial roads, site branding, a sales gallery and a channel partner programme. The craft side, from film to rights and usage, sits in our guide to the Mumbai advertising market.

What Mumbai charges, as far as I can read the market

Nobody publishes a rate card for this, so the figures here are my own estimate of the Mumbai range. They run higher than most Indian cities, mainly because salaries and rent do.

  • Senior freelancer or independent consultant: about INR 25,000 to 60,000 a month, or priced by the day for defined work.
  • Small studio or boutique shop: about INR 60,000 to 1,75,000 a month.
  • Mid sized independent agency: about INR 1,80,000 to 5,50,000 a month.
  • Network office or large independent: from about INR 6,00,000 a month, and higher once media planning sits inside the scope.
  • Paid media management: a flat monthly fee while budgets are modest, and a negotiated share of the spend once the money is substantial.

GST at 18 percent sits on top of all of it. Deduction at source applies to the fee as well. What you withhold turns on the supplier and on what is being bought, so have your accountant set the treatment once and apply it to every invoice after that. Then keep media money, production money and the agency fee on three separate lines, and ask for the vendor invoice on anything billed to you at cost.

The Mumbai pull, and when to resist it

Because this city is built around production, a Mumbai conversation drifts towards a film faster than it would anywhere else. Sometimes that is right, and a well made film works for years. Often the same money spent on store photography, a catalogue, a properly built website and three months of paid media moves more product. Ask the shop to price both routes and say plainly which one they would choose with their own money. An honest answer to that question tells you more about an agency than its showreel.

Five lines to settle before you appoint anyone

  • The category you are buying, written at the top of the scope, so later additions are visible as additions.
  • Ad accounts, analytics, domain and page admin in your ownership, with the agency given access.
  • Usage and rights on anything shot, including territory, media and duration, agreed before the shoot and not after.
  • Mark up on production and media stated as a percentage, not buried in a bundled number.
  • A ninety day review with the two or three numbers that will be looked at.

Sorting the Mumbai marketing agency market: five answers

Is a Mumbai marketing agency more expensive than one in Pune or Ahmedabad?

For the same scope, usually yes, and the premium is real rather than imagined because the team costs more to employ here. What you get for it is depth of talent and a production ecosystem on your doorstep. For a website and a search account, that premium buys you very little.

What is the difference between a marketing agency and a media agency in Mumbai?

A marketing or creative agency decides what to say and makes it. A media agency decides where it runs, negotiates the rates and verifies that it ran. In BKC those are frequently two different companies on two different contracts, and for large spends that separation protects you.

Do I need a Mumbai agency if my customers are elsewhere in India?

Only for the parts that need presence. Mumbai is a sensible base for national creative and for anything filmed. For selling in a specific regional market, a shop in that market usually writes better copy and buys local media more sharply.

How do I check a Mumbai marketing company quickly?

Ask for two case histories at your budget level, not the showreel. Ask who sits on your account weekly, by name. Ask for one client you may telephone. Then ask which parts of the scope go to a partner. Four clear answers and you are dealing with a serious shop.

Is a retainer or a project the better way to start in Mumbai?

Buy a defined project when there are specific things to be made. A retainer earns its place once the monthly work repeats and somebody can list it out. Signed before anybody can list it, it quietly becomes a meeting schedule.

The enquiry you never see, from a buyer who is not in Mumbai

A brand in Coimbatore that needs a film made, or a Delhi company that wants a national campaign produced, now begins by asking an assistant where the work should be done and which Mumbai firms to approach. The reply arrives with a point of view already in it: this kind of work, that kind of shop, these names. Not one click shows up in a dashboard, and by the time a Mumbai agency hears about the brief the category has already been chosen for it. Firms in Lower Parel and Andheri have been found through the network and through referral for decades. This is a third route into the same market, and almost nobody in it is watching it yet. Reading those answers, and changing what sits behind them, is the work AI Knows Us does.
