Marketing agency is an umbrella, and in Pune it covers at least six trades: brand and creative, performance and paid media, search and content, social and influencer, activation and trade marketing, and plain production. Hiring well is almost entirely a matter of naming which one you need before you take a single meeting. The six questions below do that naming, and they take about ten minutes to answer honestly. Work through them and the category at the end of the page is usually obvious, along with what it should cost.
Six questions that point at one category
Can a stranger say what you sell and why you are different?
Hand your website and a brochure to somebody outside your industry. If they cannot repeat it back, no amount of paid media fixes the problem, because you are paying to send traffic to an unclear proposition. Start with brand and creative work, scoped as a project with a deliverable list.
Are enquiries not arriving, or arriving and not closing?
Not arriving points at performance media and at search and content, in that order of speed. Arriving and not closing points at sales material: a comparison page, a proper quotation template, case studies, a specification sheet. That is a studio and a writer, not a retainer.
Do you sell to companies or to consumers?
Business to business selling in and around Pune is won with search presence, credible content, a usable website and sharp sales collateral. Consumer selling leans on social, creators and local search. A shop that is excellent at one is frequently ordinary at the other, so ask which half of their client list looks like you.
Does something have to be made before anything can run?
Photography, a product catalogue, a working website, exhibition panels, a product video. If three or more of those are missing, your first purchase is a production studio with a fixed deliverable list. Appointing a monthly agency while the assets do not exist means paying a retainer to wait.
Is there somebody inside who can brief and approve?
If the answer is no, do not buy three specialists. Either appoint one firm that will coordinate and accept being held responsible for the whole, or buy two or three days a month of a senior marketing person to write the briefs and run the suppliers. Unbriefed specialists produce activity, not results.
Is your market Pune, Maharashtra, India, or outside the country?
A local service business needs local search, reviews and a tight radius. A Maharashtra brand needs Marathi written rather than translated. An exporter from Chakan or Pimpri needs an English site built for an overseas buyer, trade content and a presence on the platforms those buyers use. Three different briefs, three different kinds of supplier.
What each answer costs here
I am giving ranges from my own judgement of the Pune market, so use them to spot an outlier rather than to argue a quote down.
| What you concluded you need | Shape of the purchase | My read of the Pune range |
|---|---|---|
| Brand and creative project | One off, deliverable list, six to twelve weeks | INR 60,000 to 4,00,000 |
| Performance and paid media | Monthly fee, media billed separately | INR 35,000 to 1,50,000 a month |
| Search and content | Monthly retainer, judged over quarters | INR 30,000 to 1,25,000 a month |
| Social and creators | Monthly retainer plus creator payments | INR 25,000 to 90,000 a month |
| Production studio | Per deliverable, fixed price | Website from INR 75,000, shoot day from INR 20,000 |
| Senior part time marketing help | Two or three days a month | INR 40,000 to 1,00,000 a month |
Every figure there is before GST, which runs at 18 percent on these services. A withholding deduction applies to the professional fee as well, and because it depends on the supplier, have your accountant fix the treatment before the first payment run instead of accepting whatever the invoice assumes. Keep media money out of the fee line, and ask to see supplier invoices on anything charged to you at cost.
The Pune supplier pool, described plainly
Pune has strong independents and studios, with clusters around Baner, Aundh, Kalyani Nagar and Shivajinagar, and a performance and software marketing bench that grew up alongside Hinjawadi and Kharadi. What the city has less of is large scale media buying and big budget film production, both of which tend to be bought in Mumbai. For most Pune businesses that is not a loss, because most Pune briefs do not need either. If your brief does, buy that one piece outside the city and keep the rest local.
Our page on digital marketing in Pune goes further into how the technology corridor, the manufacturing belt and the city facing businesses each need a different plan, and the advertising agency in Pune page covers the sales material route in detail.
Where one supplier doing everything goes wrong
A single firm handling brand, media, performance and production is convenient and sometimes correct. The risk is not dishonesty, it is attention: the piece the firm is weakest at quietly receives the least work, and because everything arrives in one report you cannot see it. Two protections cost nothing. Ask for one deliverable list per discipline so each has its own line and its own volume. Then ask, at the ninety day review, which discipline they would hand to a specialist if it were their own money.
Before you shortlist in Pune: answers on scope, cost and commitment
How long should a first contract with a Pune marketing agency run?
One quarter, not one year. Put the outputs and the review date inside the agreement so renewal becomes a decision rather than a default. Search and content take two quarters to show their shape, which is an argument for renewing them, not for signing twelve months on day one.
Is a Pune marketing agency cheaper than a Mumbai one?
Generally yes for the same scope, mainly because salaries and rent are lower. The gap is widest on retainers and narrowest on production, where crew and equipment cost much the same wherever you hire them.
I run a manufacturing business. Which of these six do I need?
Usually production first, then search and content. A catalogue a buyer can read, photographs of the plant and the product, and a site that ranks for the part you make. Social media management is rarely the right first purchase for a components supplier.
Can one agency cover Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad and the industrial belt?
Yes for anything digital, which has no geography. Activation work, dealer meets and exhibition support need people who will travel to Chakan and Talegaon, so ask who physically attends and what the travel is billed at.
What does a Pune marketing company need from me to start?
Three things, and the engagement goes badly without them: one number that has to move this quarter, access to your own accounts and site, and a named person who can approve work inside two working days.
Two Pune shops, compared by something that was not in the room
Buyers have stopped only asking for suggestions. They put two shortlisted Pune names side by side and ask an assistant which one suits a components manufacturer near Chakan, or which of the two does technical search work properly, and a comparison comes back with reasons attached. The public record of each firm, its own pages, directory entries, reviews, any press it has earned, is the raw material for that comparison, and the firm that loses it is never told the comparison happened. For an agency in Baner or Shivajinagar, that record has quietly become part of the sales process. There is a way to see these comparisons the way your buyers see them, which is what AI Knows Us is for.
