Semrush group buy: what it is, what the terms of service say, and the cheaper routes that keep your data

A straight account of shared seat resellers, the clauses they break, and four legitimate ways to work on a small tool budget.

A Semrush group buy is a third party service that sells many people access to a single Semrush subscription, usually through a browser extension, a shared login or a remote desktop session, for a small monthly fee. Semrush's own terms of service make an account personal, non transferable and limited to named authorised users, and give Semrush the right to suspend an account used that way. So the honest answer to the question is that group buy access is outside the contract the subscription is sold under, and the sensible move for a small budget is one of the four legitimate routes set out further down this page, all of which leave the data and the project history in your own hands.

What a group buy actually is

Three mechanics are in use, and they are worth understanding because each one has a different consequence for you.

  • Shared credentials. You are given a username and password for somebody else's subscription. Every user is in the same account, so everybody can see everybody else's projects, tracked keywords and site audits.
  • A browser extension or cookie injector. You install an extension that writes a session cookie into your browser so the tool opens as if you were signed in. The extension has permission to read and write on the pages you visit, which is a large amount of access to hand to an unknown publisher.
  • A remote desktop or shared machine. You connect to somebody else's computer that already has the session open. Anything you type into that machine, including client site names, lives on it.

What the terms of service say

This is not a matter of interpretation, because Semrush publishes the text. The Semrush terms of service contain the following, quoted as published:

  • Section 3.3 prohibits you from acting to "sublicense, resell, rent, lease, transfer, assign, time share or otherwise commercially exploit" the services. Time sharing is the exact description of a group buy.
  • Section 3.3 also prohibits you from "permit any person or entity who is not an Authorized User to use or access any Services".
  • Section 4.1 states that "Each Authorized User must use their own login credentials", that "two or more individuals may not share a single Authorized User's Account", and that "Accounts are not transferable".
  • Section 4.1 also states that where an account is abused, "Semrush may immediately suspend or terminate such Account in its sole discretion".

Sections 3.3 of the same document also prohibit automated access by "robots" and "spiders" and prohibit any attempt to "harvest or scrape any content of the Services". Several group buy operations run scripted access behind the scenes to serve many users at once, which is a second clause in the same list.

What goes wrong in practice

What you buyWhat happens
A shared seatYour tracked domains, keyword lists and audit history sit in an account you do not control, visible to strangers and deletable by them
A low monthly feeThe usage limits are shared, so the reports you need are often exhausted by other users before you get to them
A browser extensionWide read and write permission in your browser, granted to a publisher you cannot identify
Access with no contractNo support channel, no refund route, and no notice when the account behind it is closed
Access for client workClient names and site data placed in a third party account, which is the part your client contract usually prohibits

The last line is the one that matters most for agencies and freelancers. A data processing clause in a client agreement almost never allows client data to be entered into a shared account held by an unknown operator.

Four legitimate routes on a small budget

  1. The free plan. Semrush publishes a free tier intended for trying the platform. It allows a limited number of reports a day and one demo project. For occasional checks on a single site, this covers a surprising amount of ground, and the account is yours.
  2. The free trial. Semrush's pricing page carries its current trial offer, with a card required and cancellation available during the period. Used with a plan, a trial week is enough to complete a full audit and a keyword set. Our page on the published Semrush plans and the limits that set your cost sets out what each tier includes.
  3. Buy one month in the month you need it. Monthly billing exists for a reason. Research and audit work is bursty: do the research month, export everything, then cancel and work from the exports until the next cycle. Two or three paid months a year is a real budget strategy, and it is entirely within the terms.
  4. Build a free stack and buy only the gap. Search Console gives you your own impressions, clicks, queries and index status. Google Keyword Planner gives volume ranges. Analytics gives behaviour. A free backlink checker gives a sample of your link profile. What remains unpriced is competitor keyword data at scale, which is the single thing worth paying for.

A small budget stack that covers the work

JobFree optionWhen to pay
Your own rankings and clicksSearch Console, which is your own data and more accurate than any estimateNever, for your own site
Keyword volumeKeyword Planner, free with a Google Ads accountWhen you need precise monthly figures and difficulty scores
Technical auditA free desktop crawler for small sites, plus the Page Indexing reportWhen the site passes a few thousand URLs
BacklinksFree backlink checkers, which return a sampleWhen you are doing a full disavow or competitive link analysis
Competitor keywords and traffic estimatesLimited free previewsThis is the job that justifies a paid month

What a paid seat genuinely buys

It is worth knowing what you are deciding about. The reports that are hard to replicate for free are competitor organic keyword lists, historical visibility trends, keyword gap analysis between several domains, and a backlink index large enough for competitive work. Everything else in an SEO month can be done with your own data and free tools. Our guide to the five Semrush reports in the order that makes them useful shows which ones repay the subscription fastest.

What people ask about semrush group buy

Is a Semrush group buy legal?

It is a contractual question rather than a criminal one. The terms of service prohibit time sharing, resale and letting non authorised users access the service, and they allow Semrush to suspend an account immediately. The operator is breaking its contract, and the access you bought depends entirely on that contract staying unnoticed.

Can Semrush tell that an account is being shared?

Account activity patterns make shared use visible, which is why group buy accounts cycle through new logins so often. The practical consequence for a buyer is access that stops without notice, usually in the middle of a piece of work.

Is there a cheaper official plan?

Semrush publishes several tiers plus a free plan, and the entry tiers are considerably cheaper than the full suite. Check the current names, inclusions and prices on the pricing page itself, since the line up is revised.

Can two people in my company use one seat?

No. Section 4.1 of the terms requires each authorised user to use their own credentials and states that two or more individuals may not share one account. Additional users are bought as seats, and the number included is set by your plan.

What is the best free substitute for competitor keyword data?

A combination: Keyword Planner for volume on terms you already suspect, the Search Console query report for terms you already appear for, and manual inspection of a competitor's own navigation and page titles, which tells you what they are targeting without any tool at all.

Where to go from here

The report to confirm before you buy a seat

A group buy, a shared login and a full price seat all open the reports their plan includes. Before choosing any of them, ask whether the plan reports what an assistant says about a brand, and with which cited sources.

Whatever the answer, the manual method is free. Ask your buyer questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and write down the names and the pages cited. AI Knows Us offers the same check with the sources collected for you, whichever way you pay for Semrush.
