Semrush keyword tools: the five of them, what each one answers, and the order to use them in

Keyword Overview, Keyword Magic Tool, Strategy Builder, Keyword Gap and Position Tracking, with the settings and the numbers that decide a plan.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 12 October 2026

Semrush has five separate keyword tools, and knowing which one answers which question is most of the skill. Keyword Overview sizes a single term. Keyword Magic Tool finds every variation of a seed and filters them. Keyword Strategy Builder groups a seed into topic clusters and pages. Keyword Gap shows what competitors rank for and you do not. Position Tracking watches the handful of terms you have decided to own. Use them in that order and a keyword project takes an afternoon instead of a week.

This page covers the Semrush keyword toolset specifically: what each tool reports, how to read its numbers and the workflow that turns a list into a content plan. For the method itself, independent of any tool, see keyword research in five steps.

The five tools and the question each one answers

ToolQuestion it answersWhat you take away
Keyword OverviewIs this one term worth a page?Volume, global volume, difficulty, intent label, cost per click, the current top ten and the SERP features present
Keyword Magic ToolWhat else do people type around this seed?A filtered list by match type, volume, difficulty, intent, word count and SERP feature
Keyword Strategy BuilderHow do these terms group into pages?Topic clusters with a suggested pillar and supporting pages
Keyword GapWhat are competitors winning that we are missing?Shared, missing, weak and untapped keyword sets across up to five domains
Position TrackingAre we moving on the terms we chose?Daily positions by device and location, visibility and estimated traffic trend

Keyword Magic Tool: the four settings that change everything

  • Database. Set the country before you read a single number. Volume is per database, so a United Kingdom figure and a United States figure for the same phrase are different facts, and the default is not always the one you want.
  • Match modifier. Broad match returns everything loosely related to the seed. Phrase match keeps your seed words together. Exact match keeps them in order. Related returns terms that share a search result set rather than the words. Start broad to see the shape of the topic, then narrow to phrase for a build list.
  • Intent filter. Semrush labels terms informational, navigational, commercial or transactional. Filter to commercial and transactional when you need pages that sell, to informational when you are building the supporting layer that earns links and mentions.
  • Exclude list. Add your own brand name, competitor names, job words and location words you do not serve. Done once per project, this removes most of the noise that makes big lists unusable.

How to read the numbers without fooling yourself

Every keyword tool models its figures from clickstream data and search engine signals, so read them as directional comparisons rather than as counts.

  • Volume is a monthly average for the chosen database. For anything seasonal, open the trend graph before you commit a page, because an average hides a December spike.
  • Keyword Difficulty is a 0 to 100 estimate of how hard the top ten would be to break into, driven largely by the link profiles of the pages already there. Treat the band as the signal: very easy, easy, possible, difficult, hard, very hard. The exact integer is not where the decision lives.
  • Cost per click is useful even when you never run ads. A high figure means advertisers see money in the query, which is a reliable proxy for commercial value.
  • Intent is assigned by Semrush from the wording and the result set. Spot check it by opening the actual results for your top twenty terms. Where the label and the results disagree, trust the results.
  • SERP features matter for planning. A query dominated by a video carousel wants a video, and one with a featured snippet wants a direct answer in your first paragraph.

Semrush documents its metric definitions in its knowledge base, and reading the definition of a metric before you report it to anybody is time well spent.

A workflow that ends in a content plan

  • One. List five to ten seeds from how customers describe the problem, not how you describe the product. Run each through Keyword Magic Tool on the right database.
  • Two. Filter to volume above a floor you set, difficulty inside a band your site can realistically reach, and the intents you need. Export.
  • Three. Run Keyword Gap against three competitors who outrank you. Pull the Missing and Weak tabs and add them to the same sheet.
  • Four. Group the combined list by the answer the searcher wants. One page per answer, never one page per keyword. Keyword Strategy Builder does a first pass of this and a person should edit it.
  • Five. For each group, open the live results for the main term and write down what the top three pages actually do: format, depth, whether they are a listing or a guide, what they include that you would not have thought of.
  • Six. Put the chosen terms into Position Tracking before you publish anything, so you have a baseline rather than a memory.

Where the keyword tools fit with the rest of Semrush

Organic Research shows what a domain already ranks for and is the fastest way to size a competitor. Backlink Analytics explains why a difficult keyword is difficult. Site Audit tells you whether your page can even be crawled and indexed well enough to compete. The keyword tools choose the target; those three decide whether you can reach it. Our walkthrough of the five Semrush reports in the order that makes them useful covers that sequence, and if you are weighing the subscription at all, picking a tool by the one job you use it for is the quicker decision.

The semrush keyword tools questions worth an answer

Is there a free way to use the Semrush keyword tools?

Semrush offers a limited number of daily lookups without a subscription, which is enough to size a handful of terms and see the interface. Full exports, filters and project features sit behind a plan. For volume data with no subscription at all, Google Keyword Planner gives banded figures inside a Google Ads account.

Why does Semrush show a different volume from Google Keyword Planner?

They are built differently. Keyword Planner reports banded averages from Google's own ad data and groups close variants together. Semrush models per phrase figures from clickstream and search data. Pick one source for a project and stay with it so your comparisons hold, and use the other as a sanity check.

What difficulty score should I aim for?

Set the band by your site's current authority rather than by a universal number. A site with few links competes in the easy and possible bands and wins by covering questions thoroughly; an established site can take on difficult terms directly. Check the band your existing top twenty pages already rank in, and target that band plus one.

How many keywords should one page target?

One answer per page, which usually means one primary term plus the cluster of phrasings that want the same answer. If two terms need visibly different pages when you look at the live results, they are two pages.

Does Position Tracking replace Search Console?

They answer different questions. Position Tracking gives you a clean daily rank for a chosen list, by device and location. Search Console gives you your real impressions, clicks and average position across every query Google matched you to. Run both, and use Search Console as the source of truth for anything you report to a client.

The queries that live in the chat window

Semrush keyword tools list phrases people type into search engines. People also put longer, conversational questions to assistants, and those read more like a brief than a keyword.

To see them, think of what a buyer would say to a colleague, and type it in as a sentence. Check which brands are named and which pages are cited. AI Knows Us runs sets of such questions, so the results can inform the content plan your keyword research produced.
