Semrush traffic checker: the two numbers it gives you and which one to use
How to check any website's traffic in Semrush, why Domain Overview and Traffic Analytics disagree, and how to read the figure correctly.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 12 October 2026
Semrush gives you two different traffic numbers for the same domain and they are not meant to match. Domain Overview shows estimated organic search traffic, calculated from the keywords Semrush sees the site ranking for multiplied by expected click share. Traffic Analytics shows estimated total visits from every channel, built from clickstream data. Use the organic figure when you are doing SEO work on a specific set of keywords, and the Traffic Analytics figure when you want to know how big a site is overall.
Almost every argument about whether Semrush traffic data is accurate comes from comparing one of those numbers against the other, or against a figure from the site's own analytics. Once you know which question each number answers, the tool becomes straightforward.
How to check a site's traffic, step by step
- Enter the domain in Domain Overview. Use the root domain, and set the country rather than leaving it on worldwide, because a worldwide total hides where the traffic actually is.
- Read the Organic Search Traffic figure. This is a monthly estimate for the country selected. Next to it sits Paid Search Traffic, which is the same calculation for the ads the site runs.
- Open Organic Research and sort by traffic. This is where the estimate becomes useful: you see the individual keywords and pages that produce it, which is checkable and actionable in a way that a total never is.
- Open Traffic Analytics for the total picture. Visits, unique visitors, pages per visit, average visit duration, and the channel split across direct, referral, search, social, paid and email.
- Compare three or more competitors at once rather than reading any one in isolation. Traffic Analytics takes several domains side by side, and the comparison is the part that holds up.
- Pull three to six months of history. A trend line survives estimation bias far better than a single month's figure.
Why the two numbers differ
| Domain Overview organic traffic | Traffic Analytics visits | |
|---|---|---|
| Built from | Semrush's keyword index and modelled click through rates by position | Clickstream and third party data panels |
| Counts | Organic search visits only | All channels, including direct, social, referral and paid |
| Strongest for | Sites whose traffic is mostly organic search, and for keyword level work | Large sites, and understanding channel mix |
| Blind to | Visits from anywhere other than organic search results | Which keywords produced the visits |
| Use it for | SEO opportunity sizing and page level analysis | Market sizing, competitive scale, channel strategy |
A well known brand will usually show a Traffic Analytics figure far above its organic estimate, because most of its traffic is people typing the name in directly. A publisher that lives on search will show the two numbers much closer together. That gap is itself one of the most useful things on the screen, because it tells you what kind of business you are looking at.
Reading the estimate well
- Set the country. This is the single most common mistake. An estimate for the United States tells you nothing about a business trading in one European market.
- Check your own site first. You have the measured figure in Search Console and Analytics. Note how far the Semrush estimate sits from it, and carry that sense of scale to every competitor you look at.
- Expect small sites to be hardest. There is less data to model from at low volumes, so an estimate on a site with a few hundred visits a month is a signal rather than a measurement. Compare such sites on keyword count and ranking pages instead.
- Read traffic value alongside traffic. Semrush prices the organic traffic against what the equivalent clicks would cost in ads, which is often a better guide to commercial importance than visit count.
- Watch for a branded keyword carrying the total. Sort the keyword list by traffic. If the first row is the company's own name, the organic estimate is mostly brand demand, not SEO performance.
- Note the date. Semrush updates its index on a cycle. When you quote a figure in a report, write the tool and the date next to it.
Access, and the free ways to check
Semrush gives a small number of free lookups a day without a subscription, which is enough for an occasional competitor check. Traffic Analytics is a separate part of the product and is included or sold alongside depending on the plan, so check the current Semrush pricing page for which tier holds it.
For a second opinion, Similarweb and Ahrefs both publish free limited lookups, and Cloudflare Radar publishes an open popularity ranking. Taking all three and treating the middle figure as your working number is a sound habit. For any site you own, Search Console and Analytics give you measured figures at no cost, and those are the numbers to use whenever the site is yours.
This page covers checking traffic. For the wider Semrush workflow see the five reports in the order that makes them useful, and for comparing many sites at once see competitor analysis that ends in decisions.
Where people get stuck on semrush traffic checker
How accurate is the Semrush traffic checker?
Accurate enough to rank competitors against each other, and closest on larger sites whose traffic comes mainly from organic search. Check it against your own measured figures once and you will know the scale of the difference to allow for. For exact numbers on a site you own, use Search Console and Analytics.
Why is the Semrush figure lower than my Google Analytics number?
Because Domain Overview counts organic search only. Everything else arriving at your site, direct visits, email, social, referrals and ads, is outside that figure. Compare Analytics organic sessions with the Semrush organic estimate and the two move much closer together.
Can I check a competitor's traffic for free?
Yes, within the daily free lookups Semrush, Ahrefs and Similarweb each provide. Record all three in a sheet with the date. For a free picture of the keyword side, Semrush's free view shows the top ranking keywords, which is often more useful than the total.
What is the difference between visits and unique visitors?
A visit is a session. A unique visitor is a person, who may make several visits in the period. Dividing visits by unique visitors gives you a rough loyalty measure, and a high number there usually means a site people return to rather than find once in search.
Does Semrush see traffic from apps?
Its strength is browser based traffic to websites, which is what it is built to measure. For a business where a mobile app carries a large share of the usage, read the web estimate as the web part of the picture and look at app store ranking data separately.
Visitors the checker cannot count
A traffic checker estimates visits to a site from clickstream and search data. A buyer who read your name in an assistant's reply and then typed your address in appears as direct traffic, if at all. An estimate of a rival's traffic carries the same blind spot.
Get an idea of the missing part by asking assistants who the leaders in your category are. AI Knows Us runs those questions and shows the pages behind the names, which indicates who is gathering that attention.
