SERP position tools: the four categories and how to pick one
Free first party data, all in one suites, dedicated trackers, desktop software and raw APIs each answer a different question, and the six specs below decide which you need.

Start with Google Search Console, which is free, reports your own measured positions, clicks and impressions by query and page, and is the only source that reflects what real users saw. Add a paid tool when you need something Search Console does not do: daily readings, precise locations and devices, competitor positions beside your own, and SERP feature detail. Paid options fall into four categories. All in one suites such as Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz Pro, SE Ranking and Serpstat bundle tracking with keyword and backlink research. Dedicated trackers such as AccuRanker, Nightwatch, Wincher, Advanced Web Ranking, SERPWatcher and Pro Rank Tracker do tracking only, usually faster, deeper and cheaper per keyword. Desktop software, principally Rank Tracker in SEO PowerSuite, runs on your own machine for an annual licence. Raw SERP APIs such as DataForSEO and SerpApi sell the results so you can build your own reporting. Pick by keyword count, locations, frequency and whether you need an API.
Search Console first, and what it leaves to a tool
Search Console gives you the positions your site genuinely appeared at, averaged across everyone who searched, with clicks and impressions attached. Nothing paid can match that, because no tool has your users. Three jobs it leaves for a paid tool.
- Competitors. Search Console reports only your own property, and most reporting questions are comparative.
- Precision on place and device. Average position blends locations and devices. A local business needs a reading from a named city or postcode.
- Frequency and feature detail. Daily readings, and what else occupied the page: AI Overview, featured snippet, local pack, shopping, video, People Also Ask.
The four categories, side by side
| Category | Examples | Buy it when | Trade off |
|---|---|---|---|
| All in one suite | Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz Pro, SE Ranking, Serpstat | You need keyword research, backlinks and auditing in the same subscription | Highest monthly cost, and tracking limits that are tight relative to dedicated tools |
| Dedicated tracker | AccuRanker, Nightwatch, Wincher, Advanced Web Ranking, SERPWatcher, Pro Rank Tracker | Tracking is the job, at scale, across many locations, with clean client reporting | You still need a research tool alongside it |
| Desktop software | Rank Tracker in SEO PowerSuite | One or two people, large keyword sets, annual licence instead of a monthly fee | The machine has to be on for scheduled checks |
| SERP API | DataForSEO, SerpApi and similar | You are building your own dashboard or feeding a warehouse | You build and maintain the reporting layer |
The six specs that decide the price, and which ones you really need
- Keyword count. The headline number on every plan. Count your real list first: money pages, plus a sample of the long tail, plus competitor terms. Most teams track too many keywords and read none of them.
- Check frequency. Daily, weekly or on demand. Daily matters during a migration, a launch or an algorithm rollout. Weekly is enough for steady state, and produces a cleaner trend line.
- Locations and devices. National, city, postcode, and mobile separately from desktop. A multi location business pays mostly for this, because one keyword in twelve cities is twelve tracked keywords on every plan.
- SERP feature reporting. Whether the tool records which features appeared and whether you were in them. This is now the difference between a useful tool and a number generator.
- Competitors per project. Two is usually a limit worth paying to raise, since competitive movement explains your own more often than your own changes do.
- Reporting and access. White label reports, a shared live dashboard, scheduled email, and an API or a Looker Studio connector. Agencies should price this first, because it is where the hours go.
Compare two tools properly before you commit
Two tools will show different numbers for the same keyword, and that is expected: they check from different places, at different times, on different devices, with different personalisation settings. Make the comparison fair and the differences become informative.
- Same twenty keywords in both trials, chosen across head and long tail.
- Same location string and the same device, set explicitly rather than left on default.
- Read on the same day, and note the check time, because a morning and an evening reading can genuinely differ.
- Verify by hand for three of the twenty, in a clean browser profile with the location set, counting every result including the features above the links.
- Then judge the workflow, not the numbers: how fast you can answer a client's question, how good the export is, how clear the history looks after a tag change.
Record these three things alongside position
- What sat above you. Position three under an AI Overview, a featured snippet and a local pack is a very different commercial result from position three at the top of the page.
- Whether you appeared in the feature. Being the cited source in a snippet or an overview is a win that no position column shows.
- Clicks from Search Console beside it. Position is the input, clicks are the outcome, and reporting one without the other is how teams end up celebrating a chart nobody can bank.
A short way to choose
- One site, small list, tight budget: Search Console plus Wincher or SERPWatcher.
- In house team doing the full job: one suite, Semrush, Ahrefs or SE Ranking, with the tracking limit checked against your real keyword count.
- Agency with many clients and many locations: a dedicated tracker for volume and white label reporting, plus one suite licence for research.
- Multi location retail or franchise: a dedicated tracker with strong local and postcode support, because locations are the cost driver.
- Engineering led team with a warehouse: a SERP API and your own dashboard.
This page covers choosing between position tracking tools. For how the tracking itself works and what to record each week, the Google SERP tracker guide covers that ground, and what an average position actually measures sits with the keyword rank tracking page.
What gets asked about SERP position tools
What is the most accurate SERP position tool?
For your own site, Search Console, because it reports real impressions rather than a simulated check. For competitive and location specific readings, the dedicated trackers are built for exactly that job and let you set the location precisely, which is what makes a reading comparable week to week.
Why do two tools report different positions?
Different check location, time, device and personalisation settings, and different handling of the features above the links. Set the location and device explicitly in both and the gap usually closes to something you can explain.
Is a free rank checker good enough?
For a one off answer to where a page sits today, yes. For anything you report on, you want saved history, a fixed location and a fixed device, which is where the paid tools earn their fee.
How many keywords should I track?
Enough to cover every page that earns money, plus a representative sample of the long tail, plus your competitors on the head terms. If nobody reads a keyword's chart for a month, stop tracking it.
Do I still need position tracking?
Yes, as a diagnostic. Position tells you whether a change in clicks came from ranking or from the results page changing shape around you, and you cannot separate those two causes without it.
The position that has no number
Every tool on this page measures a list of ten blue links. A growing share of buyers never reaches that list, because they ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude who to use and take the two or three names offered. Those answers have no positions to track, each assistant names a different handful, and the sources they quote are often a directory profile or a forum thread rather than your site.
Add it to the same weekly routine. Ask the buying question a customer would ask, keep your own brand name out of the prompt so the answer comes back clean, and record who was named and what was cited. AI Knows Us measures those answers across the main assistants.
