Shopify and ChatGPT: the three things people mean, and what a store owner does about each
Selling inside ChatGPT, using ChatGPT to run the store, and Shopify's own assistant are three separate jobs with three separate setups.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 12 October 2026
"Shopify ChatGPT" means one of three things, and the setup differs for each. First, shoppers finding and buying your products inside ChatGPT, which Shopify handles through agentic storefronts. Second, you using ChatGPT as a tool to write product copy, plan campaigns and answer support questions. Third, Shopify's own assistant, Sidekick, which lives inside the Shopify admin. Most store owners searching this phrase want the first one, so it comes first here.
Shoppers buying your products inside ChatGPT
Shopify's help centre, read on 12 October 2026, describes agentic storefronts as a feature that lets customers discover and purchase your products in AI channels, and it names ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta among them. The page says the feature is active by default for eligible stores. You manage which channels you sell on from Sales channels, then Agentic, in your Shopify admin.
How the sale completes depends on the channel. Shopify's page says ChatGPT acts as a discovery focused referrer. A ChatGPT user finishes the purchase on your own online store checkout, in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab when they use ChatGPT on the web. For Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces, a store with direct checkout switched on can let the customer complete the purchase without leaving the channel.
Two details matter to an owner. Orders placed this way appear in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution, so you can see where each one came from. And you keep ownership of the customer relationship and the after sale experience. The sale is yours, the same as an order from your own site.
Where the story started
OpenAI announced Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol on 29 September 2025, built with Stripe. That post said US users could buy from US Etsy sellers inside chat, with more than a million Shopify merchants, naming Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx and Vuori, coming soon. It also said product results in ChatGPT are organic and unsponsored, ranked on relevance to the user. Shopify's current help page describes ChatGPT as the discovery step with checkout on your store. Treat the Shopify help page as the live description of what a Shopify store gets today, and re-read it before you change anything, because both companies keep updating this area.
What decides whether ChatGPT shows your product
The OpenAI post says results are ranked purely on relevance to what the person asked. Relevance is built from the product data the engine can read. For a Shopify store that means the fields you already control.
- Titles that say what the item is. "Navy running shorts, 5 inch, men" matches a request. A title that is only a brand line does not.
- Descriptions that answer the questions buyers ask: material, fit, size range, who it suits, what it replaces.
- Complete variant data. Colour, size, price and stock for every variant, kept current.
- Clear images with one product per frame, and alt text that names the product.
- Policies in plain words: shipping times, returns window, and the countries you ship to.
Shopify's help page says products reach AI channels through Shopify Catalog, or through the Google and YouTube sales channel or Google Merchant Center for Google AI Mode and Gemini. If you sell through Google already, a clean Merchant Center feed helps two channels at once. Our guide to how a Merchant Center product feed works covers the fields.
Using ChatGPT to run the store
The second meaning is the everyday one: you open ChatGPT in a browser tab and use it as a working assistant. The jobs that pay back fastest for a store owner are small and repeatable.
- First drafts of product descriptions from a spec sheet you paste in. Edit every draft against the real product.
- Subject line and body options for abandoned cart and post purchase emails.
- Answers to the ten questions your support inbox gets most, written once and saved as a help page.
- Collection page intros and FAQ text for the pages that already get visits.
- A weekly review: paste your top and bottom sellers and ask what the pattern suggests.
Keep a human step before anything reaches a customer. A draft that claims a material, a size or a delivery time that is wrong for your product costs more than the writing time saved. If the same prompts come up weekly, save them as a short internal document so the output stays in one voice.
Sidekick, Shopify's own assistant
The third meaning is Sidekick. Shopify describes it on its Sidekick page as an AI assistant built into Shopify to help you start, run and grow a store. The sample prompts on that page include writing product descriptions for SEO, analysing pricing, building collections and auditing shipping settings. The practical difference from ChatGPT in a tab is that Sidekick works inside the admin, next to your store, so you do not paste data across. ChatGPT in a tab is better for open ended writing and thinking. Pick by the task, and use both.
A weekly routine for the first meaning
- Open Sales channels, then Agentic, and confirm which channels are switched on.
- Pick your five best selling products and ask ChatGPT the way a buyer would, with the use case and a budget but no brand name.
- Record whether your store appears, which product, and which page the answer points to.
- For every miss, compare your title and description to the products that were named, and fix the gap.
- Repeat in a month and keep the dated log.
Wording matters, so ask three or four phrasings per product. "Best waterproof jacket for a monsoon commute under 5000 INR" and "rain jacket for cycling to work" can return different stores.
What ChatGPT says about your store is its own answer
Everything above is about getting your products into the assistant. The other half is what the assistant says once they are there. A shopper who asks ChatGPT about your brand by name gets a paragraph assembled from your product pages, reviews and whatever third party sites mention you, and it can differ from the page the shopper would have read on your site: a different return window, an old price, a collection you retired. That paragraph is the shop window for a growing share of buyers, and it is worth reading as closely as your homepage. AI Knows Us runs the same buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and lists which stores each one names, which suits a Shopify owner who wants the check across all five rather than one assistant at a time.
Questions about Shopify and ChatGPT
Do I have to pay to appear in ChatGPT shopping results?
OpenAI's 29 September 2025 post says product results are organic and unsponsored. It also says merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases through Instant Checkout. Check Shopify's current terms for your store before you rely on a figure.
Do I need a developer to switch on agentic storefronts?
Shopify's help page says the feature is active by default for eligible stores and is managed from the Agentic section of Sales channels. Most owners start there, not with code.
Does ChatGPT complete the purchase for the shopper?
For ChatGPT, Shopify's page says the shopper completes the order on your store checkout, in an in-app browser or a new tab. Other channels can offer direct checkout when you activate it.
Can ChatGPT write my product descriptions?
It writes useful first drafts from a spec sheet. Edit each one against the real product and publish only facts you can stand behind.
Is Sidekick better than ChatGPT for my store?
Sidekick works inside the admin with your store data, so it suits store tasks. ChatGPT suits open writing and planning. Many owners use both.
