Social media marketing prices in India: how to read a package before you buy it
What retainers cost by supplier type and city tier, the unit rates behind every package, the three ways a quote misleads, and what each monthly budget realistically delivers.

Social media marketing in India is sold at roughly INR 8,000 to 2,50,000 a month, and the reason that range is almost useless on its own is that packages are priced by what they contain rather than by the words on the proposal. A freelancer in a smaller city charging INR 10,000 and a Mumbai agency charging INR 1,50,000 can both be fairly priced for what they deliver. The ranges below are working figures assembled from what Indian agencies and freelancers publish openly, not a survey. Use them to take a quote apart into its parts, because once you can price the parts, comparing two proposals takes ten minutes.
The five things that set the price
Video production. The largest single factor. A package with no filming is a design and caption service. A package with a monthly shoot day, a videographer and an editor costs several times more and produces most of the results in consumer categories.
Number of platforms, done properly. Three platforms at a third of the attention each is worse value than one done well. Each additional platform adds real cost only when the content is made for it rather than copied across.
Whether ads are managed. Running paid campaigns is a separate skill and a separate fee, usually 15 to 20 percent of spend or a flat INR 5,000 to 25,000 a month, and the media spend itself is extra.
Who answers the messages. Community management and inbox cover during business hours is labour, and it is the line most often left out of a cheap quote and most often the reason enquiries are lost.
Seniority. Whether a strategist touches your account monthly, or whether an executive two years into their career runs it alone. This is invisible in a proposal and it is most of the difference between two similar prices.
What each kind of supplier charges
| Supplier | Monthly range | What you get, and what you do not |
|---|---|---|
| Individual freelancer | INR 8,000 to 30,000 | Consistency and speed on one or two platforms, no team, no shoot crew |
| Boutique studio, two to ten people | INR 25,000 to 75,000 | Design, editing, a plan and a report, limited paid media depth |
| Mid sized agency | INR 60,000 to 1,50,000 | Shoots, paid media, community management, account manager |
| Large or integrated agency | INR 1,50,000 upwards | Strategy, production scale, multi market and multi language work |
| In house hire plus freelancers | INR 45,000 to 1,00,000 all in | Full control and product knowledge, you manage it |
Unit rates, so you can price a package yourself
Ask any supplier to break a package into these parts. If they cannot, the package is a number somebody chose rather than a cost somebody calculated.
- Static design with caption: INR 300 to 1,500 per post.
- Reel or short video edited from footage you supply: INR 800 to 4,000 per video.
- Reel shot and edited by the agency: INR 2,500 to 10,000 per video.
- Shoot day with a videographer and basic equipment: INR 8,000 to 35,000.
- Monthly content plan and calendar: INR 5,000 to 20,000.
- Community management, business hours: INR 8,000 to 30,000 a month.
- Paid campaign management: 15 to 20 percent of spend, or INR 5,000 to 25,000 flat.
- Nano and micro creator collaboration: INR 2,000 to 25,000 per post, by following and category.
- Monthly report with analysis rather than a dashboard export: usually bundled, and worth asking to see a sample of.
City tier changes the price more than it changes the work
A Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi or Gurugram agency typically quotes 1.5 to 3 times what an equivalent team in Lucknow, Indore, Coimbatore or Kochi quotes for the same deliverables, driven by office cost, salaries and the clients they are used to serving. The quality gap is narrower than the price gap, particularly in design and editing, which travel well over the internet. Where the metro premium does buy something real is in strategy, paid media at scale, and production values for a brand that will be judged on them. The practical arrangement a lot of Indian businesses land on: a metro strategist or senior freelancer setting the plan, with production bought from a smaller city team.
Three ways a quote misleads, and the question that fixes each
Post count inflation. Twenty posts a month sounds generous and is cheap to produce when they are template designs. Ask how many of them are video, and how many minutes of footage will be shot.
Ad spend hidden inside the fee. A package of INR 25,000 including advertising usually means a small fee plus a small spend, and neither is enough. Ask for the fee and the media budget as two separate numbers on the invoice.
Accounts in the agency's name. Pages, ad accounts, pixels and audience lists created under an agency's business manager stay with the agency. Ask for your company to be the owner with the agency as a partner, on day one, in writing.
GST, TDS and reading the invoice
A registered supplier charges 18 percent GST on the service fee, which a registered business can claim as input credit. A small freelancer below the services registration threshold charges no GST, so there is no credit and the comparison with a registered agency should be made after credit rather than on the headline. Tax deducted at source applies on professional and contract payments, so your finance team will pay slightly less than the face value and a good supplier expects that. Media spend paid to a platform is a separate transaction from the management fee and should never be bundled into one line.
What each budget realistically delivers
INR 10,000 a month. One platform, consistent posting, no production. Correct for a small single location business that can supply its own photographs and videos.
INR 30,000 a month. Two platforms, a few shot reels, a plan and a report. The level at which most small Indian businesses start seeing enquiries from social.
INR 75,000 a month. A monthly shoot, a real content mix, managed ads on a modest budget, somebody answering messages. The level where social becomes a channel rather than an activity.
INR 1,50,000 and above. Multi platform, multi language, creator collaborations, paid media at scale, and a strategist you actually meet. Appropriate when social is a primary acquisition channel.
If you are weighing this against the other channels available for the same money, how the Indian market is arranged city by city is a useful companion, and what each category of social media tool actually does covers the software you will be asked to pay for.
What Indian businesses ask about social media marketing prices
Why do two agencies quote INR 15,000 and INR 90,000 for the same brief?
Because one is designing posts and the other is shooting video, managing ads, answering messages and putting a senior person on the account. Break both quotes into the unit rates above and the difference becomes obvious.
Is a cheaper supplier in a smaller city a false economy?
Not for design, editing and posting, which are done remotely every day across India. Be more careful with paid media at scale and with strategy, where experience of larger budgets matters.
Should the ad budget sit with the agency or with us?
With you, paid on your own card or account, with the agency managing it. It keeps the data, the history and the control where they belong.
What is a fair fee for managing INR 50,000 of monthly ad spend?
Around INR 8,000 to 12,000, or 15 to 20 percent, is normal in India at that level. Below it you are likely in a shared queue, and above it you should be getting creative testing and landing page input as well.
Do we need a separate photographer and videographer?
If visuals sell your product, yes, and a single monthly shoot day usually covers a month of content. Many agencies bundle a crew, and a few charge for one and send a phone.
How long should a contract run?
Three months to judge it, rolling after that, with thirty days notice. Twelve month lock ins with no review point are worth negotiating out.
The other answer your customer gets, and nobody invoices for it
Social media gets a business discovered. Increasingly the next step is not a visit to your profile but a question to an assistant: somebody types your category and their city into ChatGPT or Gemini and reads the two or three businesses it names, with a line explaining each. Those replies are assembled from pages, listings and public mentions rather than from your feed, which means a brand can have an excellent social presence and still be absent from the answer. It costs nothing to ask an assistant the question your customer would ask and see who it recommends. Since this page is about what things cost, the arithmetic on that one is simple: a report from AI Knows Us showing which questions name your business, and which sources each answer used, is free for the first run at aiknowsus.com.
