The concept of marketing explained, and the five principles it rests on

What marketing actually is, the five orientations a company can run on, the five working principles underneath the marketing concept, and how to turn all of it into one quarter of work.

Marketing is the work of finding out what a particular group of people needs, building something that meets that need better than the alternatives, and making sure they know about it and can buy it. That is the concept, and the important word in it is particular: marketing starts with a chosen group, not with a product looking for anyone who will take it. The idea is usually taught as one of five orientations a company can run on, which are the production concept, the product concept, the selling concept, the marketing concept and the societal marketing concept. The first three start inside the company and work outwards. The last two start with the customer and work back. Everything practical in marketing, pricing, positioning, advertising, service, follows from which of the five your company actually runs on, as opposed to which one it says it runs on.

This page explains the concept and the principles underneath it. For the delivery levers, the four and seven Ps, see the marketing mix guide.

The five orientations, in the order they developed

OrientationThe belief inside itWhat it looks like in a companyWhere it breaks
Production conceptBuyers want what is available and affordable, so make more, cheaperFocus on capacity, cost and distribution reachSupply catches up with demand and nobody has a reason to choose you
Product conceptBuyers want the best made product, so improve the productEngineering led, feature led, proud of specificationsImprovements buyers did not ask for, and a better marketed rival wins
Selling conceptBuyers must be persuaded, so sell harderLarge sales teams, heavy promotion, targets by volumeRepeat purchase and referral fall away, so acquisition cost keeps climbing
Marketing conceptChoose a group, understand it, then meet its need profitablyResearch, segmentation, positioning, a product shaped by what was learntIt needs discipline, because saying no to other buyers feels like lost revenue
Societal marketing conceptMeet the need in a way that holds up for the wider society over timeDurability, safety, environmental and community effects treated as product decisionsIt costs more in the short run, so it needs a real commitment rather than a campaign

Most companies are a mixture, and the mixture is visible in where the money goes. A company that says it is customer led and spends ninety per cent of its budget on outbound selling is running the selling concept, whatever the strategy document says.

The five principles underneath the concept

The orientations are the philosophy. These five principles are what the marketing concept means in practice, and they hold for a corner shop and a software company equally.

  • One. Choose who you are for. A market is not everybody. Pick a group whose need you can meet better than the alternatives, and accept that you are not the right answer for the rest. Everything else gets easier once this sentence exists, and nothing works until it does.
  • Two. Start from the need, not the product. Buyers purchase an outcome and put up with the product that delivers it. Describe what changes for the customer, then work backwards to what you build and what you say.
  • Three. Be different in a way that matters. Differentiation that the chosen buyer cannot feel is decoration. The test is whether a buyer can finish the sentence "I chose them because" without using the word quality.
  • Four. Deliver value, and make the exchange fair. Value is what the buyer gets divided by everything it costs them, including time, risk and effort, not just price. A fair exchange is what produces the second purchase, which is where the profit is.
  • Five. Measure and adjust. Marketing is a sequence of informed bets. Decide in advance what number would tell you a bet worked, read it, and move the budget. The companies that compound are the ones that keep this loop short.

Those five are also a diagnostic. Work down them and stop at the first one your company cannot answer in a sentence; that is where the marketing problem is, and it is almost always the first one.

What marketing is not

  • It is not advertising. Advertising is one way of carrying out one part of marketing, the telling part. A company can advertise heavily and do no marketing.
  • It is not selling. Selling converts demand that exists. Marketing decides whose demand you are after and makes you the obvious answer, so good marketing shortens selling.
  • It is not a department. Price, product decisions, service quality and the words your staff use are all marketing, whoever signs them off.

Turning the concept into this quarter's work

  • Write the chosen group down. Who they are, the decision they are facing, and what currently blocks it. One paragraph.
  • Write the need, in their words. Taken from sales calls, support tickets and reviews, not from a workshop.
  • Write the one idea you want them to believe. True, different from the alternatives, and worth paying for. The worked segmentation and positioning example takes this through end to end.
  • Pick two channels and one offer. Two done properly beats six done partly, and the five decisions that come before any channel covers how to choose.
  • Set one number per channel and a date to read it. Then put the whole thing on a single page, for which there is a one page plan template.

Asked and answered: concept of marketing explained

What is the concept of marketing in simple words?

Pick a group of people, learn what they need, make something that meets that need better than the alternatives, and make sure they know about it and can buy it. Profit comes from doing that repeatedly for the same group.

What are the five concepts of marketing?

The production concept, the product concept, the selling concept, the marketing concept and the societal marketing concept. The first three organise the company around what it makes and how hard it sells. The last two organise it around the customer, and the fifth adds the longer term effect on society.

What are the five principles of marketing?

Choose who you are for, start from the need rather than the product, be different in a way the buyer can feel, deliver value in a fair exchange, and measure and adjust. Some courses render the principles as the five Ps instead, which are the delivery levers rather than the principles, and those are covered in the marketing mix guide.

What is the difference between the marketing concept and the selling concept?

The selling concept assumes the product is fixed and the job is persuasion. The marketing concept assumes the buyer is fixed and the job is to shape the product, the price and the message around them. One pushes, the other fits.

Is the societal marketing concept just corporate responsibility?

No. Corporate responsibility usually sits beside the business. The societal marketing concept puts the long term effect inside product and pricing decisions, so it changes what gets built rather than what gets reported.

Which concept should a small business use?

The marketing concept, because a small business cannot win on capacity or on outspending anyone. Choosing a narrow group and being clearly the best answer for it is the one advantage that size does not take away.

Where the chosen buyer decides now

The marketing concept says to learn how your chosen buyer decides, then be the obvious answer there. For a growing share of buyers, the place is a conversation with an assistant. They describe the problem to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Overviews and get two or three names, each with a reason, built from reviews, roundups and forum threads.

That is a customer decision you can observe in a few minutes. Put your buyer's question to each assistant, note who is named and why, and treat the gap as the next marketing problem. AI Knows Us measures which assistants name a business when those questions are asked.
