What digital marketing costs in India, and which kind of supplier to buy it from

Monthly ranges by supplier type, how Indian agencies actually bill, the checks that separate a real agency from a reseller, and when to hire in house instead.

A digital marketing retainer in India starts around INR 15,000 a month with a freelancer, sits between INR 25,000 and INR 1,00,000 a month for most small and mid sized businesses using a small agency, and runs past INR 5,00,000 a month for a full service agency running several channels for a national brand. Add 18 percent GST. Ad spend is a separate bill. The range is wide because digital marketing is not one service, it is six, and the price is set by how many you buy and how senior the person doing the work is.

The six things that get sold as one

Almost every Indian quote is built from some mix of these. Ask for a number against each line, because a package price with no split cannot be compared with anybody else's.

  • Search optimisation. Slow, compounding, cheap per lead once it works.
  • Paid search and paid social. Google Ads, Meta, sometimes Amazon or Flipkart. Fast, measurable, and it stops the day you stop paying.
  • Social media management. Often the cheapest line and the one most likely to be padded with post counts.
  • Content and creative. Articles, landing pages, product photography, short video, ad creative.
  • Website and landing pages. Usually a separate project fee, not part of the retainer.
  • Reporting and analytics. Conversion tracking set up properly, then numbers you can audit.

Four kinds of supplier, and what each one is honestly good at

The numbers below are a working read of what Indian providers publish on their own sites and rate cards and of how the market is shaped, not a survey. The question to take into a call is not whether a quote matches this table, it is whether the quote explains what the money buys.

SupplierTypical monthly feeSuitsWhere it strains
Freelancer or solo consultantINR 15,000 to 50,000One channel done properly, a single city business, a founder who will stay involvedVolume, cover during leave, and anything needing a designer and a developer at the same time
Small agency, roughly 3 to 15 peopleINR 25,000 to 1,00,000Two or three channels for a single product or single city businessDeep technical work on a large site, and regulated categories that need a compliance reviewer
Mid sized agency, roughly 20 to 100 peopleINR 1,00,000 to 4,00,000Several channels, several markets, reporting a board will actually readSmall accounts, which get junior attention because the senior team is on the large ones
Full service or network agencyINR 4,00,000 and aboveNational campaigns, large media budgets, brand and performance under one roofSpeed, and any budget below their minimum, which they will quietly take and under serve

Two practical notes. A firm in Indore or Coimbatore with the same headcount as one in Gurugram will usually quote lower, because rent and salaries are lower, and the work can be identical. And the fee tells you a firm's cost base, not its skill: a INR 2,00,000 retainer is not automatically better execution than a INR 40,000 retainer from a specialist who has done your category thirty times.

How the money is actually billed here

  • Monthly retainer. The default. Insist on deliverables per month, not just hours or channels.
  • Per project. Right for a website, a migration, an audit, a launch. Fixed scope and fixed fee protect both sides.
  • Hourly. Common with consultants, usually INR 1,500 to 6,000 an hour. Good for review and training, awkward for delivery.
  • Percentage of ad spend. Usually 10 to 20 percent of media. Be careful with this one: it pays the agency more when you spend more, which is not always when you should spend more. A flat management fee with a spend band is cleaner.

GST on marketing services is 18 percent, and if your business is GST registered you can normally claim it as input tax credit, which makes a registered agency cheaper in practice than an unregistered freelancer quoting the same headline number. Tax is also deducted at source on professional and contract payments here; get the applicable rate from your accountant and tell the agency at the start, because one that discovers it at the first invoice treats it as a shortfall.

Telling a real agency from a reseller

A large part of Indian supply is white label: a firm sells the retainer and passes the work on. Not wrong in itself, but you should know, because it decides who you can talk to when something breaks.

  • Ask who does the work, by name and role, and meet them on the second call. A firm that will not put the practitioner in front of you is selling you a sales team.
  • Ask for two accounts in your category and what changed. Not logos. What changed.
  • Read the firm's own site. If their own blog has not been touched in two years, you are their experiment.
  • Look them up on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs register. A registered office matching the address on the site is a cheap signal.
  • Ask what happens to your Google Ads account, Analytics, Search Console and creative files if you leave. The answer should be that they are yours, with the agency added as a user.
  • Walk away from anybody promising a ranking position or a lead count in a named month. Google's own documentation says plainly that nobody can promise a number one ranking.

The brief that gets you comparable quotes

Write one page and send the same page to four firms. It changes what comes back more than anything else you can do.

  • What you sell, to whom, in which cities, and the one business number that has to move.
  • Your current monthly enquiry or order volume, and what you want it to be.
  • Your ad spend, stated separately from the fee you can pay.
  • What languages your buyers read. Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and Gujarati each change the content plan and the cost.
  • What exists already: website platform, CRM, who answers the phone, who can approve copy.
  • The commitment you will make. Three months buys a diagnosis; six to nine months is where search work starts paying.

When an Indian agency is the wrong purchase

If nobody answers your enquiries within a few hours, fix that first, because paid traffic into an unanswered inbox is a straight loss. If your total budget is under about INR 15,000 a month, a month of a consultant's time on tracking, your Google Business Profile and one good landing page beats a cheap retainer that produces posts. And if revenue rests on one large account or a tender process, an in house person who understands the business is worth more than outside channel work.

Buying digital marketing in India: what owners write in to ask

Is an agency in Delhi or Mumbai better than one in a smaller city?

Not for most briefs. Metro agencies have deeper benches and more experience with large media budgets and national launches. A specialist in a tier two city often has lower fees and more senior attention on your account. Judge the named practitioner and the plan, not the pin code. The exception is work that needs frequent in person presence, such as a shoot or a retail roll out.

How long before I can judge the engagement?

Paid channels tell you something within three to four weeks: cost per enquiry, which creatives work, which audiences do not. Search work takes longer, and the honest first checkpoint is ninety days, by which point the technical blockers should be cleared, the first pages live and indexed, and the tracking trustworthy. Set both checkpoints in writing before you start.

Should I pay a percentage of my ad spend?

Workable at larger spends where a flat fee would be unfair to the agency, but cap it: a flat management fee up to a spend level, a percentage above it, falling as spend rises. Ask what the fee would be if you halved spend next quarter.

Is a package at INR 8,000 a month worth trying?

At that fee you are buying a few hours of junior time, so expect exactly that: scheduled social posts, a monthly report, and little change to your enquiry volume. It is better spent on one defined piece of work, such as a properly built Google Business Profile with photos and review requests, or a single landing page that actually loads fast and asks for the enquiry.

What must the contract name?

Deliverables per month with quantities, the named people on the account, ownership of accounts and data in your name, the reporting format and frequency, the notice period, and what the agency hands over at exit. Add a clause that the agency will not buy links or reviews on your behalf, which protects you from a cheap tactic that becomes your problem later.

The shortlist somebody else is already reading

A growing share of Indian buyers now type this question into ChatGPT or Gemini before Google, and the answer is not ten blue links, it is three or four firm names with a sentence each, assembled from what those firms have published and what other sites say about them. Spend two minutes of your next shortlisting call on it: ask an assistant for the best digital marketing companies in India, or in your city, and see which of your four candidates it names. Measuring that and closing the gap is the job AI Knows Us does. For the tier two city picture, our guide to choosing a digital marketing company city by city covers Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, Coimbatore, Nagpur and Indore.
