Wix SEO: what you can control, what is fixed, and what the SEO Setup Checklist really does

A working guide to the Wix SEO panel, the URL patterns the platform imposes, the speed levers you actually have, and how to use the guided checklist without expecting it to do the work.

Wix gives you almost every technical control that matters: an editable title tag and meta description per page, slug editing, a canonical override, a noindex switch, custom meta tags, a structured data editor, an auto generated sitemap at /sitemap.xml, an editable robots.txt and a redirect manager. What it fixes for you is the URL pattern of each section, so blog posts live under /post/, products under /product-page/ and collection driven pages under the collection name. The SEO Setup Checklist, previously called SEO Wiz, is a personalised task list that writes your homepage tags and then tells you what to do next. It is a project plan, not an optimiser. Work through it, connect a real domain, then spend your time on pages and links.

This page covers the Wix specific controls and constraints. For keyword research and writing, the craft is the same on any platform and Google's SEO starter guide is the short version.

What you control and what the platform decides

AreaOn Wix
Title tag and meta descriptionFully editable per page, with templates per section for blog posts, products and collection pages
Page slugEditable. Wix offers to create the redirect when you change one, and you should accept it
URL prefix for a sectionFixed by the platform. Blog posts sit under a post prefix, store items under a product prefix, dynamic pages under the collection name
Folder nestingNot freely nestable the way a file based site is. Plan a flat structure and use internal links and breadcrumbs to show hierarchy
Canonical tagSelf referencing by default, overridable per page in the advanced SEO panel
Robots metaA per page index switch, plus custom meta tags for anything else
robots.txtEditable from the SEO settings
SitemapGenerated and kept current automatically at /sitemap.xml. Submit that URL in Search Console
Structured dataEditable per page, and per section as a template, so one edit covers every blog post
RedirectsA built in 301 manager, including bulk import, which is what makes a migration onto Wix survivable
Server response and cachingManaged by Wix. Not a lever you have, which is a fair trade for not running a server
hreflang for multiple languagesHandled by the Wix Multilingual app once you define the language versions

Wix keeps its own documentation for all of this in the SEO section of its help centre, and the feature list sits on the Wix SEO page.

The first hour: six things, in order

  • Connect a custom domain and publish. A site on a wixsite.com subdomain is a weaker base for everything else, and a paid plan is what lets you attach your own domain. Do this before you write a word of copy.
  • Run the SEO Setup Checklist. It asks for your business name, location and the terms you want to be found for, then writes your homepage title and description and hands you a task list. Accept the homepage tags, then rewrite them in your own words.
  • Write titles and descriptions for every page that exists. The checklist covers the homepage. Nothing else is done for you, and a Wix site with five pages sharing one title is the most common problem on the platform.
  • Set the section templates. In SEO settings, define the pattern for blog posts, products and dynamic pages once. New items then inherit a sensible title instead of a blank one.
  • Verify in Search Console and submit /sitemap.xml. Wix has a built in verification option, which saves fiddling with DNS.
  • Add your business details and location if you serve a place. A Wix site plus a properly filled Google Business Profile is most of local SEO.

The constraints worth planning around

  • Section prefixes are permanent. You cannot move blog posts to the root. Stop fighting it. A prefix in the path has not stopped anyone ranking, and the time is better spent on the slug, which you do control.
  • Blog category and tag pages multiply. Wix Blog generates a page per category and per tag. Keep categories few and deliberate, give each one an introduction, and do not create a tag unless you plan to treat it as a topic page.
  • Every app you install adds weight. Chat widgets, popup builders, booking tools, review carousels and social feeds each load their own script. Install what earns its place and remove the rest from the Apps panel, not just from the page.
  • Animations, video backgrounds and large galleries are the usual speed problem. Wix compresses and serves images well on its own, so the heavy items are the ones you added for effect.
  • Test the real mobile URL. Hiding an element in the mobile editor changes the layout. Run the published mobile URL through PageSpeed Insights and work from what that shows rather than from the editor preview.
  • Custom code goes in one place. Settings has a custom code area with head and body placement. Keep the list short and label every entry, because an abandoned tag from a campaign two years ago is still loading for every visitor.

Structured data on Wix, done once

The per section structured data editor is the most underused feature on the platform. Set the markup template for your blog posts once and every post after that ships with it. The same applies to products, services and events. Validate the output with Google's Rich Results Test on a published URL, and use the search gallery to check which types are eligible for a rich result before you invest time in one.

What gets asked about Wix SEO

Is Wix bad for SEO?

No. The controls listed above cover everything Google needs to crawl, understand and index a site, and Wix renders pages for crawlers rather than leaving them to assemble in the browser. The platform decides your URL prefixes and your server configuration, and in exchange you get redirects, sitemaps, image handling and hosting without maintaining any of it.

Does the SEO Setup Checklist actually optimise my site?

It writes your homepage tags and generates a personalised plan based on your business, location and target terms. The rest of the list is work for you to do: page titles, content, a Google Business Profile, links. Treat it as the project plan for your first fortnight.

Can I change the URL of a page after it has been indexed?

Yes, and Wix prompts you to create the 301 redirect at the same time. Accept it. Then check the old URL in a browser and confirm it lands on the new page before you move on.

Why are my pages not appearing in Google?

Work down four things: the site is published, the page's index switch is on, the page appears in /sitemap.xml, and robots.txt is not blocking it. Then use URL Inspection in Search Console on the exact URL, which reports what Google saw and when.

Do I need a premium plan for SEO?

You need a paid plan to connect your own domain, and your own domain is the foundation for everything else. The SEO tools themselves are part of the editor.

How do I move off Wix later without losing traffic?

Export your URL list from Search Console and from /sitemap.xml, map every URL to its new address, and have the 301 redirects live on the new host from the moment the DNS changes. Keep the same titles and content on the highest traffic pages for the first month so only one variable has changed.

A check that is not in the Wix dashboard

The SEO Setup Checklist finishes when your titles, descriptions and structure are in place. It does not tell you how an assistant describes the business built on that Wix site. A buyer asking about it gets a paragraph assembled from your pages and from everyone else's.

Open ChatGPT and Gemini, ask about your business and read what comes back. AI Knows Us repeats this for the questions you choose, so a change you make in Wix can be traced to a change in the reply.
