Yoast SEO: what it does, what the green lights mean, and when Premium is worth it

A practical guide to configuring Yoast SEO on WordPress, reading its analysis honestly, and deciding between the free version, Premium and the main alternatives.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 12 October 2026

Yoast SEO is a WordPress plugin that gives you control of the technical output of your site: the title tag and meta description on every URL, the canonical tag, the robots directives for each content and archive type, the XML sitemap, the social preview tags and a structured data graph. The coloured bullets next to your draft are a writing aid, not a ranking signal. The free version covers the whole technical surface, and Premium adds redirects, internal linking suggestions, several keyphrases per page and workflow reporting. Install it, spend twenty minutes in Search appearance, then go back to writing.

This page covers configuring and reading Yoast on WordPress, and how it compares with the main alternatives. For the wider WordPress setup, permalinks, hosting and archive sprawl, see a general WordPress SEO guide.

What Yoast actually controls

Strip away the interface and the plugin does six jobs. Knowing which six stops you expecting the other things.

  • Titles and descriptions, as templates per content type and as overrides per URL. Variables such as the post title, the site name and the separator are filled at render time.
  • Indexing rules. Search appearance has a tab per content type and per taxonomy, with a switch for whether that type appears in search results. This is where you noindex tag archives, date archives and author archives on a one person site.
  • Canonical tags. Self referencing by default, overridable per URL in the Advanced panel of the Yoast box.
  • The XML sitemap, at /sitemap_index.xml, generated from whatever you left indexable. It replaces the core WordPress sitemap.
  • Structured data. Yoast builds a single connected graph for each page, tying the organisation or person, the website, the page itself and the article together. This is one of the better schema implementations in the WordPress plugin space, and it is why the Site representation question in the setup wizard matters more than it looks.
  • Breadcrumbs and social tags, both of which need one line in your theme or one toggle, and both of which are easy wins.

Twenty minutes of setup that does most of the work

  • Run the first time configuration. The Site representation answer, a person or an organisation, feeds the schema graph and the knowledge panel fields, so answer it properly rather than skipping it.
  • Open Search appearance. Set the homepage title and description by hand. Then go through Content types, Taxonomies and Archives and switch off search results for anything that duplicates another page: tags you do not curate, date archives, author archives on a single author site, and the media and attachment URLs.
  • Turn on Redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself, which removes one near empty page per uploaded image.
  • Set title templates per content type so a post published in a hurry never ships with a missing title tag.
  • Connect Search Console in Google's own interface and submit /sitemap_index.xml, then check the sitemap does not list anything you just set to noindex.
  • Mark your five or six most important pages as cornerstone content. It changes how the internal linking tools treat them and it is a useful editorial label in its own right.

How to read the analysis without being led astray

The two panels are an SEO analysis and a readability analysis. Both run on your draft in the browser. Neither talks to Google.

What the panel saysWhat to do about it
Keyphrase not in first paragraph, in a subheading, or in the slugWorth acting on. These are genuine signals of what a page is about
Keyphrase density too low or too highWrite the sentence a human would write. Density targets are the fastest way to produce an awkward page
Meta description missing or too shortAct on it. It is the sales line in the result and it takes thirty seconds
Text length below the recommendationJudge by the query. A definition page can be short and still be the best answer
Readability: sentence length, passive voice, transition wordsA useful editing prompt. Not a ranking factor, and worth overriding for technical writing
Internal and outbound links missingAct on it. Both are real, and the outbound one is the most ignored bullet on the list

A page with all green bullets and nothing to say will not outrank a page with orange bullets that answers the question better. Google's own guidance on helpful, reliable, people first content is the standard the plugin is approximating.

Free or Premium

The free version is complete on the technical side: titles, descriptions, canonicals, robots directives, sitemaps, schema and breadcrumbs. Nothing on that list is held back. Premium is built around four things, and they are all about working faster rather than about tags Google reads.

  • A redirect manager, which creates a 301 automatically when you change a slug or delete a post. This is the feature most people are actually buying.
  • Internal linking suggestions while you write, plus an orphaned content report that lists pages nothing links to.
  • Several keyphrases and synonyms per page, so a page can be analysed for more than one search.
  • Workflow and reporting for teams, and the support channel.

Buy it if you are publishing often enough that slug changes and internal linking are real chores, or if a redirect plugin is the only other thing you were going to install. The current feature list and prices are on the plugin's own page and Yoast's pricing page.

The main alternatives, fairly

PluginGood atTrade
Yoast SEOEditorial workflow, the schema graph, documentation, and being the one every freelancer already knowsThe free tier holds back redirects and multi keyphrase analysis
Rank MathThe most in the free tier: redirects, 404 monitoring, several keyphrases, a wide schema template libraryA denser admin with more switches to understand
All in One SEOGuided wizards and a gentle setup for an owner doing this aloneMore upsell prompts inside the admin
No plugin at allZero weight. Core WordPress already emits a sitemap at /wp-sitemap.xmlYou hand code titles, descriptions, canonicals and schema in the theme

Switching is low risk in both directions: each of these imports the other's data, and the thing to verify afterwards is that only one plugin is outputting a title tag and a canonical. View source and search for rel="canonical". One is correct, two is the bug.

What people ask about Yoast SEO

Does installing Yoast improve my rankings?

It removes the technical reasons a good page underperforms: a missing title, a wrong canonical, an archive competing with its own posts, a page absent from the sitemap. Rankings then come from the content and the links. Think of it as clearing the road rather than driving the car.

Do I need all green bullets?

No. Fix the ones about titles, descriptions, the first paragraph, subheadings and links. Treat density and transition word targets as suggestions and override them when the natural sentence is better.

What is the best free alternative to Yoast?

Rank Math, if what you want from Premium is redirects and several keyphrases per page, because both are in its free tier. All in One SEO if you prefer a wizard led setup. All three cover the technical essentials for nothing.

Can I run Yoast alongside another SEO plugin?

Run one. Two plugins emit two title tags, two canonicals and two sets of structured data. Import into the one you are keeping, then deactivate and delete the other.

Why is Google showing a different title than the one I wrote?

Google rewrites titles when the one on the page does not match what the page is about, and it describes that behaviour in its guidance on title links. Write a title that matches the query the page answers, keep it specific, and it usually stands.

Does Yoast slow my site down?

Its front end output is a block of meta tags and a JSON script, which is small. If speed is your problem, look at hosting, your page builder and your hero image first, measured on a real URL in PageSpeed Insights.

A green light for a page nobody reads first

Yoast scores a page for readability and keyword use, and the bullet turns green. A buyer who asks an assistant never sees the bullet. The assistant reads the page, decides whether it answers the question, and may name you or may not.

Take your three greenest pages and ask the question each one answers. AI Knows Us checks the same thing across assistants for as many pages as you like, which shows whether a green light and a mention go together on your site.
