AI SEO on WordPress: what Yoast and Rank Math's AI features do, and the three jobs they split into
Making a WordPress site readable by AI, writing with AI, and seeing what assistants say about you: what each plugin ships, from their own pages read on 22 October 2026.

AI SEO on WordPress means three separate jobs, and the two big SEO plugins now sell a tool for each. The first is making your site easy for AI systems to read: an llms.txt file, clean structured data and control over which AI crawlers get in. The second is writing with AI: generated titles and meta descriptions, summaries, fixes for SEO checks and internal links. The third is measuring what ChatGPT, Gemini and other assistants say about you. Yoast and Rank Math both cover all three now, in different ways and on different plans. This page sets out what each one ships, from their own pages read on 22 October 2026, and where the plugin work stops.
Job one: make the site readable by AI
An assistant answering a question does not crawl your whole site the way a search engine does. Both Yoast and Rank Math say this in their own documentation, and both now offer tools aimed at that reader.
- llms.txt. Yoast generates an llms.txt file automatically and lists it as free in every Yoast plan, including the free plugin. You can let Yoast choose the key content or pick the pages yourself, and preview the file before it goes live. Rank Math has an llms.txt module you switch on from its dashboard and then edit under General Settings. Rank Math's own help page adds a fair warning: llms.txt "is currently a proposal and not an official standard", and adoption across AI platforms is limited.
- Schema Aggregation (Yoast). Yoast says it built this with Microsoft on the NLWeb protocol. It gathers your site's structured data into one deduplicated graph, so an AI agent can get the full picture in one request.
- Bot Blocker (Yoast). Lets you allow or block individual AI crawlers. Use it with care: blocking the crawler an assistant uses for live search also removes your pages from what that assistant can fetch when it answers. Our guide to which AI crawlers to allow separates training crawlers from search crawlers.
None of this replaces the basics. Google's page on AI features and your website, read on 22 October 2026, says "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary". A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. On WordPress, that still means a fast theme, sensible index settings and pages that answer the question in plain words.
Job two: write with AI inside WordPress
Yoast's AI tools
Yoast lists five writing tools on its AI features page:
- Yoast AI Generate writes titles and meta descriptions from what you have actually written, for posts, pages and categories, one at a time or in bulk. It also writes social titles and descriptions. Yoast lists it in Yoast SEO Premium, Yoast WooCommerce SEO, Yoast SEO AI+ and Yoast SEO for Shopify, so it is not in the free plugin.
- Yoast AI Summarize turns a long post into short, editable bullet-point takeaways.
- Yoast AI Optimize suggests fixes for selected SEO checks in your copy. You apply, edit or dismiss each one.
- Bulk Editor shows titles, descriptions and focus keyphrases for every page in one place, with AI drafts you approve.
- AI Content Planner looks for gaps in your existing content and turns the next topic into a structured draft.
Yoast's stated rule across all of them is that nothing goes live without your approval.
Rank Math's AI tools
Rank Math has renamed its Content AI subscription to Rank Math AI. Its help centre calls this "primarily a name and branding change", with three tools under the new name:
- Content AI, which Rank Math describes as 40+ AI tools for research, writing, fixing SEO tests, metadata and image alt text, working in the block editor, the classic editor and page builders such as Elementor, in more than 30 languages.
- AI Link Genius, which suggests internal links, links keyword variations automatically and audits link health.
- AI Visibility, covered under job three below.
Rank Math AI is sold yearly, with feature uses that reset each month and do not roll over. Free plugin users get a small allowance, which Rank Math puts at one to five uses for each available feature, and some tools have no free use at all. Buyers of Rank Math PRO, Business or Agency get a 15-day trial of the matching AI plan. Our page on what is in Rank Math's free version covers the plugin itself.
The rule that matters more than the tool
Google's guidance on generative AI content, read on 22 October 2026, says AI is useful for research and structure. It also warns that "using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users" may break its spam policy on scaled content abuse. It asks you to fact-check AI output by hand, because models predict likely words rather than look facts up. AI-written meta descriptions and summaries are low risk. Whole posts generated in bulk are where sites get into trouble.
Job three: see what AI says about you
Both plugins now include a tracker that asks AI assistants questions and records whether your brand appears. They are not the same size.
| Yoast AI Brand Insights | Rank Math AI Visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | Web-based, in your MyYoast account; no plugin or CMS access needed | Inside WordPress, under Rank Math SEO, as a module |
| Plan | Included in Yoast SEO AI+ | Needs a Rank Math AI subscription |
| Assistants read | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude | ChatGPT and Gemini; Starter and Creator pick one, Expert can pick both |
| Questions and cadence | Up to five brand questions, scanned weekly | Daily, weekly or monthly on Expert; weekly or monthly on the lower plans |
| Headline score | AI Visibility Index, blending mentions, sentiment, citations and position | AI Visibility score, from rank, citations, mentions and sentiment |
If you already pay for one of these plans, its tracker is a cheap way to start watching AI answers. Read the engine list closely first. A tracker that reads two assistants tells you about those two only.
A sensible order for a WordPress site
- Install one SEO plugin, not two. Two plugins write competing canonical tags and duplicate structured data.
- Turn on llms.txt if your plugin offers it, and check the file lists your most useful pages.
- Check your robots rules and any firewall or bot-blocking setting, so the search crawlers used by assistants can reach your pages.
- Use AI for metadata and first drafts, and have a person check every fact before publishing.
- Ask the assistants your buyers use the questions your buyers ask, and write down who gets named.
Where the plugin trackers stop
The plugin trackers read a short list of questions on two or four assistants. Neither reads Google AI Overviews, which shows on Google's own results page, and neither does anything about the answer once you see it. AI Knows Us reads ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews for the questions your buyers ask, shows which sources each answer leans on, and then does the fixing: writing the pages and earning the mentions on the sites those engines read. Questions about AI SEO on WordPress
Is there a free AI SEO plugin for WordPress?
The free Yoast plugin includes llms.txt generation. Free Rank Math users get a small number of uses of some Rank Math AI features. The bigger AI writing and tracking tools sit in paid plans on both.
Does llms.txt get my site into ChatGPT answers?
It helps assistants that choose to read it find your best pages. Rank Math's own documentation calls it a proposal rather than an official standard. Crawler access and clear pages matter more.
Can I run Yoast and Rank Math together for their AI features?
No. Run one SEO plugin. Yoast's AI Brand Insights is web-based and needs no plugin access, so a Rank Math site could still use it through a Yoast AI+ plan.
Will AI-written posts hurt my WordPress site in Google?
Not because AI wrote them. Google's guidance targets pages that add no value, especially many of them at once. Check facts by hand and add your own knowledge to every post.
Do I need a special plugin to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews. The page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
