AI SEO software: what each kind does, and a two week trial that settles it
Four products sell under one name. Here is what each one measures, where its numbers come from, and how to test one before the invoice renews.

AI SEO software covers four different products sold under one name: assistants that do SEO work faster, platforms that crawl and track Google with machine learning on top, tools that measure whether AI assistants name your brand, and services that write and publish the pages. Most teams need two of the four. The expensive mistake is paying three vendors for the same dataset. This page sets out what each category does, where its numbers come from, and a two week trial that settles which one you keep.
The four categories
Ask a vendor which of these four it is. Every product in this market is mostly one of them, and a demo will not tell you unless you ask.
| Category | What it does | Where its data comes from | What you still need beside it |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI assistants for SEO work | Drafts titles, meta descriptions, briefs, schema and internal link suggestions | A language model plus whatever you paste in | A source of truth for your own facts, and an editor |
| Classic SEO platforms with AI features | Site crawls, keyword and backlink databases, rank tracking, content scoring | Their own crawler, a keyword index, clickstream panels, and the Search Console API if you connect it | A way to see what assistants say, which a crawl does not show |
| AI visibility and answer tracking | Asks buying questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI surfaces, then records who was named and which sources were cited | Live prompting of the assistants, run on a schedule | The technical and content work that changes the answer |
| Done for you publishing | Writes, publishes and gets the business listed on third party sites | Your own site plus the directories and platforms it reaches | Measurement you can read independently of the people doing the work |
The split between the second and third rows is the one that catches people out. A site crawl tells you whether a page can be fetched. It does not report whether an assistant named you when a buyer asked. Those are two measurements taken with two different instruments, and a tool that is excellent at one is usually silent about the other. We set the split out in detail in the two different jobs sold as AI SEO.
Where the numbers come from, and why that is the first question
Two tools can show a different figure for the same thing because they measure with different instruments. Five data sources are in play, and knowing which one is behind a number tells you how much weight to put on it.
- Their own crawler. Accurate about your site, and blind to everything off it.
- The Search Console API. Google's own impressions, clicks and positions for your property. The most trustworthy number in SEO, and free. Start at the Search Console product page.
- A keyword index. Modelled search volumes built from clickstream panels and planner data. Useful for relative size, and best read as a band rather than an exact monthly count.
- Result page collection. The tool runs the search and reads the page. Good for tracking features and competitors, and tied to the location and device it ran from.
- Live assistant prompting. The tool asks the actual question in the actual product. This is how an AI answer gets measured, because there is no console for it.
When a sales call quotes a number, ask which of those five produced it. The answer tells you what the number is good for.
The overlap that costs money
Three patterns show up in almost every software audit.
Two platforms reading the same keyword database. Teams keep a legacy platform for rank tracking and buy a newer one for content. Pick the one your team opens daily and cancel the other.
An AI writing tool beside a platform that already includes one. Most large SEO platforms now ship a drafting tool. Check the plan you already pay for before you add a separate subscription.
A brand monitoring tool pointed at AI answers. Social and media monitoring tools watch published text. An AI answer is generated at the moment of asking and is never published anywhere, so it has to be captured by asking the question. These are complementary products rather than substitutes. Our breakdown of the categories is in AEO tools and what each one measures.
A two week trial that settles it
Vendor demos run on accounts that look good. Run the trial on your own worst case instead, and judge it on output you can act on.
- Days 1 and 2. Connect Search Console and your analytics. Write down the three decisions you want the tool to inform, one sentence each. A tool that informs none of the three has finished its trial already.
- Days 3 and 4. Run a full crawl and export the issue list. Count how many items are real and how many are noise. A list of 4,000 warnings that resolves to eleven real problems has told you something useful about the tool.
- Days 5 to 7. Take ten queries whose position you already know and compare the tool's reading against Search Console. Note the size of the gap and whether it is consistent.
- Days 8 to 10. Ask your ten real buyer questions by hand in two assistants, without naming your company, and save who was named. Compare that against whatever the tool reports for the same questions.
- Days 11 and 12. Hand the tool to the person who will open it daily, with no training call. Watch where they stop.
- Days 13 and 14. Write the one page case for keeping it: the decision it changed, the hours it saved, the overlap it removes. If that page is hard to write, you have your renewal answer.
Six questions to ask before you sign
- Which of the five data sources above produces each headline number on the dashboard?
- How often is each number refreshed, and is that daily, weekly or monthly?
- Which AI surfaces are prompted, and are the prompts asked without the brand name in them? Naming the brand in a tracking prompt changes the answer, which is why the blind prompt rule matters.
- How many times is each prompt run before a figure is reported? One run is a sample of one.
- Can I export the raw rows, including the cited sources behind every answer?
- What happens to my data and my prompt set if I cancel?

What people ask about AI SEO software
What is the difference between AI SEO software and an SEO platform?
An SEO platform measures Google: crawling, indexing, keywords, links and positions. AI SEO software is a wider label that also covers using a language model to produce SEO work, and measuring whether assistants name you. The categories table above is the quickest way to tell which one a product is.
Do I need separate software for AI visibility?
You need a separate measurement, and it can come from a feature inside a platform you already pay for or from a dedicated tool. The test is whether the questions are asked in the real assistants, asked without your brand name, and run more than once. AI Knows Us does this across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and its free scan needs no account.
Can software do the SEO work for me?
It does the repeatable parts well: crawling, diffing, flagging, drafting and reporting. The parts that move the result stay human, because deciding what a page should be about and which third party sites to get listed on needs knowledge of your buyers that no crawler holds.
How much should I budget?
Published prices move, so read them on the vendor's own pricing page on the day you buy. The useful budgeting rule is to count seats and projects first, because those two numbers drive the plan tier more than the feature list does.
What is the single most useful free tool?
Search Console. It is Google's own data about your own site, it costs nothing, and almost every paid platform is reading it through the API and presenting it back to you.
What to do first
- List every SEO and content subscription you pay for, with its renewal date and the person who opens it.
- Write the three decisions you want software to inform. Drop any tool that informs none of them.
- Connect Search Console before you trial anything, so every tool is judged against the same baseline.
- Ask your ten buyer questions by hand in two assistants, without naming your company, and save the cited sources. That hour tells you whether you need the third category at all.
- Run the two week trial above on your own site, and write the one page case before the trial ends.
