Best AI SEO tools: the two different jobs sold under one name

One group of tools uses AI to help you do SEO, the other measures whether AI names you, and knowing which you need decides your shortlist.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 12 October 2026

"Best AI SEO" covers two different products sold under one name. One kind uses AI to help you do SEO work: keyword research, briefs, drafting, internal links and audits. The other kind measures whether AI assistants, meaning ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, name your business when a buyer asks. Decide which of the two jobs you are buying for, and the shortlist writes itself. Get that wrong and you end up with a content editor when what you needed was a measurement.

Why the category is confusing

Search for the best AI SEO tool and you get a list mixing a brief generator, a rank tracker, a site crawler and an AI answer monitor. In the first group, AI is the engine inside the tool. In the second, AI is the thing being measured. For more on why the second job exists, see GEO versus SEO. Pick the sentence that matches your problem:

  • "I need to produce and fix more pages, faster." That is job one.
  • "I want to know whether ChatGPT mentions us when buyers ask." That is job two.
  • "Both." Buy them separately and measure first.

Job one: tools that use AI to do SEO work

The underlying tasks are the ones teams have done for years, and the AI part is assistance inside the tool. This table sorts the well known options by what each is for.

ToolWhat kind of tool it isUsually bought for
SemrushAll in one search platformKeywords, rank tracking and audits, with AI writing and AI answer reporting as add on modules
AhrefsSearch platform, known for its backlink indexLink and keyword research, audits, AI assisted content
SE RankingAll in one platformRank tracking, audits, client reporting
Surfer SEO, ClearscopeContent optimisation toolsBriefs, and an editor that scores a draft against ranking pages
Frase, MarketMuseResearch and planning toolsTurning a results page into a brief, and topic planning
Screaming FrogSite crawlerStatus codes, redirects, titles, canonicals, structured data
ChatGPT, Claude, GeminiGeneral assistantsDrafting, clustering a keyword list, writing schema, reviewing your copy

Each vendor publishes its own pricing on its own site. Read it there and note the date, so your comparison uses current figures.

What to look for in a job one tool

  • Does it show its working? A tool telling you to add a heading should name the pages it compared you against.
  • Can you export the raw data? Export means you can audit a number yourself and carry your history to the next tool.
  • Does it do the dull parts? Redirect chains, orphan pages and broken canonicals are where most wins sit.
  • Is a free tool enough to start? Google Search Console reports your impressions and queries at no cost. Read it first, then add a licence for what it leaves out.

Job two: tools that measure whether AI names you

Disclosure first. We make one of these and we have listed it first, which you should discount accordingly. It is first for a design reason you can check on our methodology page: every tracking question is asked without naming the business, and every rate is published with its numerator, denominator and date.

What to look for in a job two tool

All six are verifiable inside a trial, which is why they are the list rather than a feature grid.

  • Your exact prompts, in your buyers' words, frozen with a version number.
  • The blind rule. Keep your brand name out of the question, because naming yourself primes the engine. On 27 July 2026 we ran the same 78 questions twice in one day for our sister company clawlaw.in. The run that named the brand put it first almost everywhere. The blind run did not. One run measured the market, the other measured our own prompt.
  • Repeat count. Ask each question three times and report the spread, so you are reading a pattern rather than one draw.
  • Per engine reporting. Separate numbers per assistant are the actionable ones.
  • Raw answer export with timestamps. Reading the answers behind a number is what turns a chart into evidence.
  • A stated range. Thirty questions is a small sample, so publish the range and treat overlapping numbers as unmoved.

What each group tells you

A job one tool helps you publish and repair pages at pace. A job two tool tells you which assistants name you, for which questions, and which sources they used. Much of what the engines read about you sits on sites you do not own: directories, trade press, review sites. Read the sources in the answers, then earn a place in them. One check comes before both purchases: make sure the crawlers can reach your site, using which AI crawlers to allow in robots.txt.

Where AI Knows Us fits

AI Knows Us measures whether the five engines name a business when buyers ask, finds the reasons they do not, then fixes them by writing pages and getting the business onto the sites those engines read. A free scan needs no account, and the product takes no payment today.

Choose something else if

  • You want a brief generator or an on page editor. That is job one, and the first table has it.
  • You want backlink data, a crawler or log analysis. Those are different products.
  • You want a signed contract and an invoice today. Paid plans are not open yet.
  • You want your brand name inside the test prompts. The measurement here keeps it out on purpose.

Asked and answered: Best AI SEO tools

What is the best AI SEO tool overall?

It depends which of the two jobs you are buying for. For producing and fixing pages, use the first table and choose on data export and technical depth. For knowing whether assistants name you, use the second table and the six checks.

Can I just use ChatGPT instead of an SEO tool?

For plenty of tasks, yes: drafting, grouping a keyword list, writing a schema block, reviewing your copy. Pair it with Search Console for your search data and a crawler for your site.

Do AI SEO tools help with AI search?

They help you ship clean pages that answer a real question, which serves both audiences. To find out which assistants name you, measure that side directly: see how to measure AI visibility.

How much do these tools cost?

Each vendor publishes pricing on its own site. When you collect the figures, record the date, the billing term, what counts as one unit of usage, and whether raw export sits behind a higher plan. That last item usually decides the bill.

Is free AI SEO software enough to start?

For a first pass, yes. Search Console costs nothing and the hand audit costs only your time. Start from that baseline and let each paid tool show what it adds.

What to do first

Write down which job you are buying for, then spend an afternoon on the free version of it.
