Best advertising agencies in Detroit compared, and the co-op approval list that shortens your shortlist before you call anybody

Detroit's agency capacity is organised around the automakers in three buying tiers. Which tier your money sits in decides who will take the work, what it costs, and whether your spend gets reimbursed.

If any part of your advertising budget is reimbursable by a manufacturer, the shortlist of Detroit agencies you can actually use is decided before you make a single call, by whoever is on your brand's approved vendor list. That one fact reorders this market more than creative reputation does. If none of your money is reimbursable, you are buying into a city whose agency capacity is largely contracted elsewhere, which is good news for craft and bad news for priority. Here is how the market is structured, what each tier buys, and what to ask on the first call.

The first question, before reputation or price

Is this your own money, or is some of it co-operative money from a manufacturer or franchisor? The answer changes everything downstream. Co-operative advertising programmes reimburse part of a local advertiser's spend, and they do it against rules: approved creative, approved placements, approved claim language, sometimes approved suppliers, and documentation submitted in a specific format inside a specific window. An agency that has never submitted a co-op claim will cost you the reimbursement, which is usually more than the agency fee it saved you.

So before you write a brief, get three documents from your manufacturer or franchisor contact: the current programme rules, the approved vendor or supplier list if one exists, and the claim submission format. Every programme is different and they change, so take them from the source rather than from an agency's summary of them.

The three tiers, and which one you are buying in

The automotive industry gave this city a vocabulary that now applies to almost any brand with a dealer or franchise network, and Detroit shops use it unprompted.

TierWho spendsWhat is boughtWhat it means for you
Tier oneThe manufacturer or national brandNational brand campaigns, product launches, the brand platform itselfHeld by a small number of large shops on long retainers. Not available to you unless you are the manufacturer
Tier twoA regional group or dealer association, pooling moneyRegional offers, seasonal events, market level media weightYou influence it as a member rather than commissioning it. Worth attending the meetings
Tier threeThe individual dealer, franchisee or local businessLocal media, always on digital, inventory and service promotionThis is where most buyers on this page actually sit, and where the co-op rules bite hardest

The mistake is shopping at the wrong tier. A tier three advertiser calling a tier one shop will get a polite meeting, a number with a comma in an unexpected place, and a junior team if the work is accepted at all. A tier three advertiser calling a competent local shop with co-op experience gets somebody who already knows the submission format.

What this city is genuinely good at, and what you overpay for

Detroit's deep bench is in automotive craft and production. Vehicle photography and CGI, mechanical reveal, launch film, dealer system work at volume, and media buying habits built around model year calendars. If you are selling a complex physical product with a long consideration cycle, that experience transfers and it is a real reason to hire here rather than somewhere cheaper.

What you can overpay for is category adjacency. A shop whose reel is automotive will price a restaurant group or a healthcare practice as unfamiliar work, and you will fund the learning. Ask directly what share of current billings is automotive. A high number is not a problem if you are automotive and is a warning if you are not.

One practical note on geography that catches out buyers from outside the region. Most of the agencies you will meet are not downtown. The addresses cluster through Southfield, Birmingham, Troy, Royal Oak and Dearborn, and a team that describes itself as a Detroit agency may be a forty minute drive from the city. That matters only if you intend to be in the room regularly, which for a tier three account you should.

How to judge the shortlist on something checkable

Reputation in this town is thick and much of it is decades old. Rank on what a firm will put in front of you instead.

  1. Co-op experience in writing. Which programmes, how recently, and who on the team handles submissions. Not whether they are familiar with co-op.
  2. The media authorisation trail. Who signs a buy, who holds the contracts, and whether you receive the station and platform invoices or only a summary. Ask for a sample monthly reconciliation with the client details removed.
  3. What they publish about results, and the denominator. A case study with a percentage and no base number is not a result.
  4. Ownership of the assets. Footage, stills, CGI models and the raw files. Vehicle and product CGI is expensive to rebuild and frequently stays with the production partner unless the contract says otherwise.
  5. Who does the work. The named people on the account, and what happens to them when a larger client has a launch quarter.

If your real problem is volume of enquiries rather than advertising

Plenty of searches for a Detroit advertising agency are really about enquiry volume, and advertising is only one of several ways to buy it. The sources behind a dealer's phone calls and form fills are priced very differently from each other, and knowing which one you are short of changes who you should hire. We break the sources and their pricing down in where car dealer leads come from and how each source is paid for. If the gap is in organic search across the metro rather than in paid media, the service area question comes first, and that is covered in SEO in Detroit.

The shortlist that forms before your campaign runs

There is a stage of the local buying journey that no Detroit media plan currently reports on. Somebody in Troy opens an assistant and types a question about who to buy from in your category in their area. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews answer it by naming a handful of businesses, built from pages they can quote. Your advertising does not appear in that answer and neither does your website, unless the sources those engines read happen to mention you. For a tier three advertiser this is the shortlist, formed before the first click your agency is being measured on.

AI Knows Us is the product we sell for reading that, and the thing to check before buying it is whether it fits a group rather than a single rooftop, because most Detroit tier three advertisers are a group. Here our own pricing page contradicts itself and you should see both readings rather than our preferred one. The Agency plan's card renders Brands 10, and the feature comparison's Businesses covered row reads 10 for Agency against 1 for every other plan. Two rows further down, the row headed More than one business reads No, for all eight plans, Agency included. Both render on the same page, fetched 21 October 2026. If you run six dealerships, ask us which row is right before you pay for anything, and do not accept this page as the answer.

Profound is the clearer buy on procurement. Its pricing page, read the same day, publishes SSO and SAML with SOC 2 compliance and a dedicated specialist with a 24 hour response commitment on its Enterprise package, and it publishes no price for that package at all, so compare it on limits rather than on cost. Our ladder is published in six currencies, from $149 for SEO Start, which watches zero buyer questions on zero engines and is a demand harvest tier rather than a measurement one, up to $1,799. If a manufacturer's vendor security review stands between you and a purchase, theirs will clear it sooner.

Questions Detroit advertisers ask before they sign

Do I need an agency in metro Detroit at all?

For tier three local media and co-op work, local knowledge of stations, submission habits and the market's seasonality is worth real money. For brand and production work, the right question is who has done your kind of product, wherever they sit.

What should a tier three account cost to run?

Ask for the fee separated into retainer, production and media commission, and ask what happens to the fee when media spend drops in a slow month. A single blended number hides which of the three you are actually buying, and it is the first thing to unpick in a proposal.

Can one agency handle both the manufacturer facing work and local advertising?

Some can, and the thing to check is whether the same team does both or whether local sits with juniors while the brand work takes the seniors. Ask who attends your monthly review by name.

When can a local campaign be judged?

Expect the first clean read at the end of a full month of consistent weight, and a reliable read at the end of the third. Shorter than that and you are reading noise, especially in a market with heavy seasonal swings in the automotive calendar.

What is the most common way a Detroit relationship goes wrong?

The co-op claim is submitted late or in the wrong format, the reimbursement is refused, and the argument that follows poisons an otherwise good account. Agree who owns submission, in writing, in the first week.
