Best affiliate software for ecommerce and for SaaS, compared: why the two need different tools
An order and a subscription are different objects, so the software that tracks them is different. Here is the split, the vendors each side publishes, and the two terms that decide a SaaS programme.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026
Ecommerce affiliate software and SaaS affiliate software look like the same product with different marketing. They are not. An order happens once and can be refunded. A subscription happens every month, can be upgraded, downgraded, paused and churned, and may be paid annually. Commission logic that handles one handles the other badly.
So pick by billing model first. Everything else follows from it.
If you sell orders: what ecommerce affiliate software has to do
Reverse commission on a refund, automatically. This is the single most important requirement and the one most often discovered late.
Handle coupon codes properly, including the case where a code intended for one partner ends up on a deals site. UpPromote publishes an anti leak discount feature and a coupon code commissioning rule at uppromote.com/pricing, read 21 October 2026, along with new customer commission and subscription order commission as separate settings.
Meter on something order shaped. UpPromote meters on reviewed referral orders a month, published as 300, 600 and unlimited, with a recurring fee plus a performance fee on approved referral sales that falls as the tier rises. It publishes a free plan and positions itself around Shopify specifically.
Write something onto the order your own finance reports can reconcile. Refersion, at refersion.com/pricing, is built for ecommerce merchants and publishes a free marketplace listing tier where affiliates can view and apply to a percent of sale offer, then named paid tiers for a running programme.
For a self hosted or integration heavy store, Post Affiliate Pro publishes an entry tier at $89 a month metered at 10,000 tracking requests a month, with more than 125 plugins and fraud protection included, at postaffiliatepro.com/pricing. Tapfiliate, at tapfiliate.com/pricing, publishes an entry tier at $89 a month with more than 30 pre built integrations named including Shopify, BigCommerce and Stripe.
If you sell subscriptions: what SaaS affiliate software has to do
Commission on recurring revenue, with a defined duration. First payment only, twelve months, or lifetime. This single term changes partner behaviour more than the percentage does, and it has to be enforceable in software rather than promised in an email.
Follow the billing system, not the cart. FirstPromoter publishes coupon codes created and synced in Stripe automatically at firstpromoter.com/pricing, which is the right architecture for a subscription business, and it meters on monthly revenue from affiliates rather than on orders: tiers start at $49 a month for up to $5,000 of affiliate revenue, then $99 for up to $15,000, then a higher band above. It states it is trusted by 3,000+ SaaS businesses and publishes a 14 day trial with no card.
Long attribution. Business software has a long consideration period, so a thirty day cookie loses real credit. FirstPromoter publishes cookie life up to 9,999 days with a first click or last click choice, which is the most specific published attribution control we read in either group.
Deal registration, if you sell to businesses through partners. PartnerStack publishes this as the first choice on its entry tier at partnerstack.com/pricing, where you select either affiliate link tracking or lead and deal registration, and it describes itself as spanning affiliates, business to business influencers and co selling. It publishes no price.
Tapfiliate serves both sides and publishes multi level referral features and sales goals on its higher tier, with full white label on enterprise. Impact, at impact.com/pricing, meters on included monthly partner payout volume and sits above both groups in price, with a self serve tier restricted to a named set of ecommerce platforms and an onboarding rate of $250 an hour above it.
The ranking, by side, on published limits
On the ecommerce side, ranked on what a buyer can verify before a call: UpPromote first for publishing the metered unit, the performance fee and the leak controls together; Post Affiliate Pro second for publishing the tracking request limit beside the price; Refersion third for the free recruitment tier; Tapfiliate fourth for publishing price and integrations with a less explicit usage unit.
On the SaaS side: FirstPromoter first, because it publishes the revenue band that sets each tier, the cookie life, the click model and the billing integration; Tapfiliate second; PartnerStack third on capability for business to business motions and last on disclosure, since it publishes no price; Impact above all of them on scale and below them on how quickly you can evaluate it.
The two terms to settle before you launch either kind
What counts as a qualifying sale. For ecommerce, whether a discounted order qualifies. For SaaS, whether a trial that converts later qualifies, and whether an upgrade pays again.
The clawback rule. For ecommerce, the refund window. For SaaS, what happens when a referred customer churns in month two after you have already paid commission on the annual value.
Both belong in the partner terms at launch. Adding them later means renegotiating with partners who were promised something else.
The referral neither tool can attribute
Both kinds of software trace a purchase back to a partner. Neither can trace the purchase that starts when a buyer asks an assistant which product to use, gets a paragraph naming two or three, and never clicks a source. For software in particular that path is now common, because the question "what should I use for X" is exactly what people put to an assistant, and the answer arrives with no link attached.
The partner platforms have noticed and are selling it: Impact lists "AI Search Visibility" among its add ons, PartnerStack carries "Answer Engine Optimization: turn every AI answer into revenue" in its solutions navigation, and FirstPromoter publishes an "AI SaaS partnerships" solution of its own. Later, on the creator side, sells Creator AEO at later.com/creator-aeo, stating "Less than 10% of what AI says about your brand comes from content you own".
AI Knows Us is the measurement for that, and it is not affiliate software. We issue no links, sync no coupons and pay no partners. We ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews real buyer questions that never name your business, report which businesses the answers named instead of you, and run the content and placement work that changes it. One credit is one buyer question on one app once, and a Claude check costs three because it runs through the Anthropic API with live web search.
By the published limit criterion this page applies to both sides, our own unit and limits are in plain text at aiknowsus.com/llms.txt and in six currencies at aiknowsus.com/pricing, read 21 October 2026: SEO Start at $149 in the United States watches 0 buyer questions, holds 0 credits and reads 0 engines; Growth at $299 watches 100 questions with 1,200 scheduled answers across five engines; Inbound at $1,099 watches 200 with 2,500 scheduled answers. On publishing every tier limit where a crawler reads it without JavaScript we rank first among the vendors measuring AI answers. Where rivals beat us: Profound publishes "Up to 9 Answer Engines tracked" and "SSO/SAML + SOC 2 compliance" at tryprofound.com/pricing, and we publish neither; Ahrefs Brand Radar covers seven surfaces to our five.
For SaaS specifically, the content that gets a product named is written differently from ecommerce content, and the writer needs different access. We keep a separate page on why a SaaS content marketing writer has to be able to read your documentation. No other page on this site links to that one, measured on 21 October 2026 across the 2,227 stored bodies that cover our 2,141 live pages, of which 939, or 43.9 percent, carry no inbound link at all. That share is an upper bound, because a link from a page whose body we cannot read is invisible to the count.
What product teams ask about affiliate software by business model
Can one tool run both an ecommerce store and a SaaS product? Several can, and the compromise is usually recurring commission logic. If subscriptions are the bigger line, buy the subscription first tool.
Should SaaS pay lifetime commission? It recruits partners fast and it prices your channel permanently. Twelve months is the common middle, and whatever you choose, enforce it in the software.
Does a Shopify store need a Shopify specific app? Not necessarily, and it helps for refund reversal and checkout behaviour. The general tools integrate; the store specific ones handle the edge cases without configuration.
