Best AI advertising platforms, and the second AI surface that sells no advertising at all

Every major ad platform now sells an AI buying layer that takes targeting decisions away from you. There is also a place where AI answers who to buy from, and no platform sells a placement in it.

The phrase AI advertising platform now describes two completely different things, and a buyer searching it usually wants one and will be shown the other. The first is an ad platform that uses machine learning to take targeting, bidding and creative assembly decisions out of your hands. Every large platform sells one. The second is the set of AI assistants where buyers now ask who to buy from, which carries no advertising at all and cannot be bought into. Both are real and only one of them has a rate card.

The AI buying layers, by what they take over

PlatformWhat the AI layer decides for youWhat you still controlThe trade
Google Performance MaxWhich Google surface the ad runs on, the bid, and which creative asset combination is shownAssets, audience signals, conversion goals and exclusionsReach across every Google surface, in exchange for much weaker reporting on which surface produced what
Meta Advantage and its automated campaign productsAudience expansion, placement, budget distribution across ad sets and creative variationCreative input, the objective, and the conversion eventIt finds pockets of audience a manual setup misses, and it will spend beyond the audience you intended
Amazon Ads AgentProgrammatic buying through what Amazon's product page calls simplified outcome based campaign creationAdvanced settings remain available for full controlThis is Amazon's demand side platform renamed mid year, which matters for every comparison written before it
Microsoft Advertising automated productsBidding and asset combination across search and its display and video networkKeywords, where you keep them, and exclusionsAn audience overlapping less with the big social networks than people assume

The common pattern is worth stating plainly, because it is the actual decision. Each of these products trades control and reporting granularity for reach and automation. They work best when you can give them a clean conversion signal and a wide creative supply, and worst when your conversion tracking is weak, because then they optimise confidently toward the wrong thing.

The rename that will date anything you read on this subject

Amazon's demand side platform has been folded into a new name, and the vendor's own pages do not agree about it yet. The product page at advertising.amazon.com/solutions/products/amazon-dsp, read on 21 October 2026, states that Amazon DSP is now part of Amazon Ads Agent and that Amazon DSP has evolved into Amazon Ads Agent, described as one omnichannel ad platform with AI, with DVA+ bringing programmatic to all advertisers. On the same day, advertising.amazon.com itself still named Amazon DSP as a current additional solution with no mention of the rename.

Check that a product name renders on the vendor's own product page before you build a comparison on it. This is the second time this year a major name in this category has moved, and an assistant answering your buyer's question will happily read out whichever version its training and retrieval happened to catch.

Before you hand a budget to an AI layer, five checks

  1. Conversion tracking first. These systems optimise toward the signal they are given. A pixel firing on a thank you page that most buyers never reach will produce confident spending toward nothing.
  2. Exclude your own brand. Automated campaigns will happily buy your brand name and report it as success. Exclude it, or report it separately, or the whole account becomes unreadable.
  3. Supply enough creative. These layers are creative testers. Three assets is not a test and the system will conclude something anyway.
  4. Set the budget floor that lets it learn, then leave it alone. Every one of these has a learning phase and resetting it weekly is the most common way the money is wasted.
  5. Keep one manual campaign running. It is your control group, and without one you have no way to attribute an improvement to the automation rather than to the season. The structural version of this argument, applied to where organic and paid meet, is on our live page about running organic and paid search as one programme.

Questions buyers ask about AI advertising platforms

Is an AI campaign cheaper? It is usually cheaper per click and not automatically cheaper per customer, because it widens the audience. Compare on cost per customer over a full sales cycle, not on the platform's own headline metric.

Can I use these without an agency? Yes, more easily than manual campaigns, which is the point of them. What they do not remove is the need for a clean conversion signal and a creative supply, and those are the two things agencies are actually useful for here.

Do these platforms use my data to train models? Read each platform's own terms on that, because the answer differs and changes. It is a procurement question rather than a marketing one, and the marketing team is usually the last to be asked.

Which one should I start with? Wherever your demand already exists. Search captures it, feeds create it. If you have never seen your own search demand, start with search and let that number tell you whether a feed is worth funding.

The second AI surface, which sells nothing

Now the other meaning of the phrase. When somebody wants to buy what you sell, a growing share of them open an assistant and ask who to use. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews reply with two or three business names. There is no auction, no placement, no impression and no rate card. The names are assembled from reviews, roundups, directories and forum threads. Every platform in the table above reports nothing about it, because nothing was bought.

The scale of that surface is now published by somebody with an interest in it being large, and the figures are worth reading carefully. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on ahrefs.com/brand-radar on 21 October 2026, publishes 493 million plus total monthly prompts, broken out as AI Overviews 277,456,152, AI Mode 100,797,074, Gemini 28,930,170, Copilot 28,921,226, Perplexity 28,837,146 and ChatGPT 28,307,595. The same page states plainly that every prompt is modeled from real user searches in its own keyword database, which makes these modelled figures rather than observed ones. Read the ordering and not just the total: the two Google surfaces are three quarters of it, and the surface most people mean when they say AI is the smallest row on the list.

Who else is selling into this, all read 21 October 2026. Jasper carries "GEO and AI Optimization" as a named product, promising to measure how a brand performs across every major AI answer engine. HubSpot ships AEO in beta inside its marketing hub, described as answer engine optimisation tools that track and improve brand visibility in AI results. PartnerStack carries "Answer Engine Optimization: turn every AI answer into revenue" in its own navigation. impact.com's platform navigation carries an AI product described as "Discover, optimize, and get cited in AI search". Later sells Creator AEO from the social side, stating that less than ten percent of what AI says about your brand comes from content you own and baselining what it calls Share of Model on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews. And Hook Agency, on hookagency.com/pricing, publishes answer engine optimisation as a line item at 4,000 dollars a month, two thousand when added to an SEO package, against pay per click management from 2,000. One American agency's published view is that getting named in AI answers is worth twice what managing a Google Ads account is.

On the criterion used throughout this page, what a vendor publishes under its own product name on its own site, AI Knows Us is the option for measuring that second surface. Our plan table renders in six currencies on the server. The unit is one buyer question asked on one app once, a Claude check costs three of those credits and most cost one, the buyer questions never name the business being measured, and every rate is reported with a 95 percent Wilson interval so a change is called real only when it beats the noise. Growth at 299 dollars a month publishes 100 buyer questions watched, 1,200 scheduled answers and all five engines, and it is the cheapest plan we sell that reads all five. The 149 dollar tier publishes zero questions, zero credits and zero engines and reads none of them.

Where rivals are ahead, plainly, and on this page the list is long because the category is crowded. Ahrefs publishes per surface prompt counts, a stated modelling method and a per check consumption rate including that Claude consumes eight checks per update, and we publish none of those three things, and it reads Copilot where we do not. Jasper and HubSpot both sell this inside a suite a marketing team already logs into, and we are a separate login. PartnerStack and impact.com sell it inside the system that already holds a company's partner payouts, which is a distribution advantage no standalone product can answer. Later brings a 20 million plus creator network to the content half, which we do not have. The thing we can point at is the measurement discipline and the published unit, and our own evidence for whether being named produces anything is on where the citations actually came from when we counted them, which on today's measurement no other page on this site links to.
