Best AI visibility tool for an in-house SEO or content lead, ranked on whether it names the page that got cited

An SEO manager and a head of content both get handed the same instruction, make us appear in AI answers, and both can only act at the level of a URL. Seven vendors' own pages read on 20 October 2026, scored on whether the output reaches that level.

If your job is to change pages rather than to approve a budget, rank these on one output: does the tool tell you which URL of yours was cited, or only that your brand was named? On the vendors' own live pages, read on 20 October 2026, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Rankscale are the two that sell the URL level explicitly. Ahrefs names cited pages as a tracked object, defines a citation as the engine linking to your pages or domains as a source, and separately watches which of your pages the AI crawlers read. Rankscale sells a counted allowance of AI visibility checks for any URL on each tier and describes a citations analysis that names the sources behind an answer. We export the full tracking log on every plan, which is the raw material for the same analysis, and we do not ship a cited pages view. That gap is real and it is stated here rather than written around.

Why the URL is the only unit either of these jobs can act on

An SEO manager asked what to change for AI search cannot change a brand. A head of content asked what changes when the engine answers the question cannot commission a share of voice. Both of them commission or edit a page, and both of them need to know which page did the work.

The distinction the vendors themselves draw is the one to buy on. A mention is your name appearing in the prose of an answer. A citation is the engine attaching a source to that answer, which is a URL. Ahrefs prints exactly that pair of definitions on its own Brand Radar page. The first number tells a marketing lead whether the category knows you exist. The second tells a content lead which article earned it, and only the second is a brief.

So the two roles merge here on purpose. They are two job titles with one purchase decision, because the artefact that makes either of them effective is a list of URLs, yours and your rivals', attached to specific buyer questions and specific dates.

What each vendor's own pages say about reaching the URL, read on 20 October 2026

Every line is from the vendor's own live page on that date. Figures that set a tier are given as limits. No vendor's prices are reproduced here, including where they are published plainly, because a price restated on a third party page stops being true without anybody editing it.

  • Ahrefs Brand Radar. Its feature strip names AI Visibility, custom prompts, AI responses, cited pages, search queries, and YouTube and Reddit visibility. A separate AI Analytics section describes finding the pages AI search already sends traffic to, and a bot analytics piece describes watching AI crawlers read your pages and which ones they visit most, listed as free while in beta. The plan table counts monthly checks, from one hundred and fifty upward, with each prompt consuming one check per platform, per location and per update, and Claude consuming eight checks per update. For the index side, it publishes its own prompt volumes by surface, including over two hundred and seventy six million for AI Overviews and over twenty eight million each for Perplexity and ChatGPT, and says question sets there are re-tested monthly on a ninety day reporting window.
  • Rankscale. Page audits are a counted line item on every tier, fifty, then one hundred, then two hundred AI visibility checks for any URL. Search term creation is unlimited and execution draws on credits. Its citations analysis is described as discovering exactly which sources the engines cite when mentioning your brand and your competitors, and which of those are most authoritative. A separate feature shows the clarifying questions ChatGPT asks as follow ups. CSV and Sheets export sits above the entry tier.
  • Scrunch AI. Citations and sources appear on both its published tiers, and site audits are counted on the entry tier at five a month with a full site audit reserved for Enterprise. Query fan out is marked limited on the entry tier. The entry tier is one brand workspace with five user licences and four named engines.
  • Peec AI. Its pricing page is built around prompts, models and projects, with daily tracking on every published tier and unlimited users throughout. Data access is listed as an API, MCP, custom CSV exports and a Data Studio connector. On the page we read, no cited pages view is named among the tier features, so treat the source level analysis as something to confirm inside a trial.
  • Semrush. Its pricing page sells AI visibility inside the wider platform: the entry SEO and AI search tier publishes a daily tracked prompt allowance and one domain for AI brand performance, the tier above it doubles the prompt allowance, and share of voice appears only on the highest tier. Additional users are a paid add on. Its own investor newsroom records Adobe completing the acquisition of Semrush on 28 April 2026, so an in-house team renewing here is renewing with an Adobe company, and the same newsroom carries an Adobe Brand Visibility launch on 26 June 2026 that folds the AI visibility work into Adobe's content tooling.
  • Profound. The free tier is published with history none, exports none and API none, so a reading taken there cannot be compared with next month's. Enterprise publishes history all time, exports in CSV and JSON, an API, and up to nine answer engines, and it is reached through a demo.
  • Athena. Its free tier publishes a credit allowance across five named engines with unlimited users, prompt and response analysis, and sources and competitor insights. Data export to CSV is listed, and extra credits and API access are paid add ons on top of the Starter subscription.

Where these vendors beat us, named

We sell in this category, so the losses matter more than the wins. Ahrefs beats us on the URL question twice over: it names cited pages as a tracked object and it watches which of your pages the crawlers actually read, and we do neither. Rankscale beats us on per URL work, selling a counted audit allowance against any address you give it. Four of these vendors beat us on logins. Our pricing page lists one login with full access on every plan; Peec, Otterly, Profound and Athena publish unlimited users and Rankscale publishes no per seat charge. For an SEO manager and a head of content who are two different people, that single login is a real cost of choosing us.

Peec publishes a trust page and a changelog, and Rankscale publishes a changelog in its own footer. Our domain carries no trust centre, no status page and no changelog as of 20 October 2026. Evertune publishes a stated margin of error and says it samples each prompt one hundred times per model, which is a stronger public statement of statistical method than anything on our pricing page.

What we publish, read as a disclosure

Our pricing page on 20 October 2026 sells five AI apps, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, checks every plan weekly with extra checks available at any time, and exports the tracking log at any time on every plan. Billing is in credits where one credit is one buyer question put to one AI app once, a Claude check costs three because Claude costs us more to run, the cost is shown before a check starts, and a failed check returns the credit. Plans include a monthly page allowance, which is the opposite trade from every vendor above: the measurement comes with the writing rather than instead of it. Nothing renews on its own.

Separately, and this is a finding about sources rather than about tools: across one thousand two hundred and sixty readings taken on 16 October 2026, eighty two per cent of every citation we recorded landed on a page belonging to a company or an agency itself, and under one per cent landed on a review directory. That is the number that makes the URL the unit of work. The page level reading behind it is in why AI search cites one page instead of another, a 200 query matched page audit.

What actually changes in the work, for each of the two jobs

For an SEO manager. The query is replaced by a question, and the position is replaced by a presence. You stop owning a keyword list and start owning a question list, which has to be written in the words buyers use rather than harvested from a volume tool, because these questions carry no search volume at all. Crawler access becomes a hard prerequisite instead of a hygiene item, because a page an engine cannot fetch is a page it answers from memory.

For a head of content. The unit of success moves from a session to a sentence. An article that gets summarised and attributed has worked, even where the click never arrives, and an article that gets summarised without attribution has been used without being credited. That second case is the one worth hunting, and it is only visible if your tool keeps the answer text.

Questions an in-house SEO or content lead asks before buying one of these

Do I need a tool at all in the first month?

No. Thirty questions, two engines, your own name left out of every question, the date written down and the answers saved is a first baseline, and it costs an afternoon. Buy the tool at the point where you need the same thirty questions re-asked on a schedule without a person remembering.

Which single output should I insist on in a demo?

The answer text with its sources, for one question, exportable. A dashboard can show you a score without ever showing you the sentence it came from.

If a tool only reports my brand, is it useless?

It is useful for the budget conversation and thin for the editing conversation. A brand level number tells you whether to keep going. It will not tell a writer which of eleven articles earned the citation.

Our platform already includes an AI module. Is that enough?

It is enough to find out whether you have a problem. Read two fields before you rely on it: how many prompts the tier tracks, and whether share of voice is on your tier or the one above it. On Semrush's own pricing page share of voice appears only at the top tier.

Does a review directory profile move an AI answer about us?

On our own measurement of one thousand two hundred and sixty readings, directory pages took under one per cent of recorded citations while company and agency owned pages took eighty two per cent. Spend the quarter on your own pages.

The first reading to take on your own site

Pick the one buyer question you most want to win, ask it on two engines with your company name left out, and then go and read the page that got cited instead of yours. That page is your brief, written by your competitor, graded by the engine. Everything on this list is a way of producing that same artefact faster and more often, and the tools that reach the URL are the ones that produce it at all.
