Best business social media platforms compared, and the five business jobs each one can actually do

Social media is a business platform for five specific jobs and not for the others. Sort the job first and the platform choice stops being a matter of opinion

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

The question behind this search is not really which network to join. It is whether social media can carry a business function rather than just a marketing message, and the answer is yes for five jobs and no for the rest.

So sort the job first. A platform that is excellent at one of these is often poor at another, and a business that picks a network before picking the job ends up with an account that posts and does nothing else.

The five business jobs

Job one, a storefront

Selling inside the app, with a catalogue, a checkout or a handoff to one. Instagram and Facebook Shops connect to a product catalogue and are the strongest of the group for a consumer goods business with SKUs and photography. TikTok Shop is the aggressive entrant and its economics change frequently. Pinterest works as a catalogue surface for anything visual with a long consideration window, home, wedding, craft, apparel. LinkedIn does not do this and should not be asked to.

Job two, a service counter

Taking questions, complaints and order problems in direct messages. This is the job most businesses are already doing badly without having decided to. Facebook and Instagram inboxes, plus WhatsApp Business where your customers use it, carry most of this volume in the United States for consumer businesses. The platform matters less than whether somebody owns the inbox and whether there is a stated reply window.

Job three, a booking and enquiry channel

Appointments, quotes, viewings, consultations. The mechanics are thin on every network, so what matters is the handoff. A business here needs a link that lands on a real booking system and a profile that states hours, service area and price range.

Job four, a recruiting channel

LinkedIn is first for professional and technical hiring with no serious rival, and this is where the business platform framing is most literal, because the profile, the company page and the job posting are one connected product. Facebook groups and Instagram are genuinely better than LinkedIn for hourly and trade hiring, which surprises people.

Job five, a trust and proof surface

Where somebody checks you exist, has staff, has recent activity and has reviews. Every network does this job passively and it is the single most undervalued one, because an account that has not posted in eight months is read as a business in trouble.

The platforms ranked, on what each one publishes a business product for

The criterion is deliberate and checkable. Rather than ranking on audience size, which moves and is reported by the platforms themselves, each network is placed on how many of the five jobs it ships a named business product for.

  1. Facebook. Four of five. Shops, Inbox, Pages with booking integrations, groups for hiring, and the proof surface. Weakest on recruiting for professional roles.
  2. Instagram. Four of five, sharing Meta's infrastructure, stronger on storefront and proof, weaker on service counter at volume because the inbox tooling is simpler.
  3. LinkedIn. Three of five, and the best in the set at recruiting and at professional proof. No storefront.
  4. TikTok. Two and a half of five. A real storefront, a growing service layer, and the shortest proof memory of the group because the feed is interest based rather than follow based.
  5. Pinterest. Two of five, strong as a catalogue and discovery surface, almost nothing for service or recruiting.
  6. YouTube. Two of five, exceptional as a proof and demonstration surface, with commerce arriving through shopping affiliate links rather than a full catalogue.
  7. X. One and a half of five, mostly service counter for businesses with a technical audience, and thin commercial tooling.

Where a rival framing beats this one. If your single job is reach among under twenty fives, audience size is the better criterion and TikTok and Instagram move up. Published business products are the right criterion for a business deciding what the account is for, not for a brand buying attention.

So is social media a business platform

It is a business platform for the service counter, the proof surface and recruiting. It is a sales channel for a narrow set of product types, mostly visual consumer goods with a low consideration cost. And it is a poor primary demand source for considered purchases, professional services and anything with a long sales cycle, because the audience is not in a buying posture when they arrive.

The practical consequence is a staffing one. A business running social as a business platform needs somebody who answers messages, not somebody who schedules posts. Those are different hires and the second one is the one most businesses make first.

The surface that sits outside all seven

There is now a place where a buyer gets a shortlist that none of the networks above control. Somebody asks an assistant which supplier to use in your category and gets a written answer naming two or three companies, built from sources the reader does not open. A business can do all five jobs well on four networks and still not appear in that answer.

It is worth treating as a sixth surface with its own measurement rather than as an extension of social. AI Knows Us watches the buying questions in a category across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and reports which companies get named. Read on https://www.aiknowsus.com/pricing on 23 October 2026, Growth is $299 a month for 100 watched questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month across those five; a Claude check costs three credits where most cost one, which that page explains as "A Claude check uses 3, because Claude costs us more to run". The pricing page sets Growth at 1,200 scheduled answers a month.

Before choosing networks it helps to be clear on what the channel is for at all. Social media in marketing, the three jobs it does and where it fits in the plan covers that.
