Best CPG marketing agencies compared, and the retailer relationship that decides which one you can use

A packaged goods brand does not buy marketing, it buys shelf. The agencies that matter are the ones with a working relationship inside the retailer, and that is a checkable thing.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

A packaged goods brand is chosen in about four seconds, in a place the shopper is already standing, from whatever is physically in front of them. That single fact decides which agency you need. Availability beats attention, so the supplier that moves your business is usually the one that can work inside a retailer's systems, not the one with the best film.

Which means the sorting question for a CPG agency is uncomfortable and specific. Ask which retailer platforms it works in by name, who at that retailer it deals with, and what it can get done there that your team cannot. A shop that answers with audience targeting has told you it is a media buyer wearing a commerce label.

The four suppliers that answer this search

The shopper and commerce agency. Lives inside the retailer. Retail media, digital shelf, search inside the retailer's site, promotion mechanics, planogram and category story work. The supplier that moves units, and the one most CPG brands underbuy.

The brand and creative shop. Positioning, packaging, campaign, the thing that makes the pack recognisable at four seconds. Essential and slow, and it does not fix distribution.

The performance and direct to consumer agency. Paid social, marketplace advertising, subscription funnels. Right if a real share of your volume is sold direct. Expensive misdirection if ninety percent of your volume goes through grocery, because it optimises the ten percent.

The category and trade consultancy. Pricing, pack architecture, trade terms, category reviews. Not marketing in the usual sense, and frequently the highest return purchase in a packaged goods business.

The criterion this page ranks on, and the firm that wins it

No CPG agency publishes a fee. So the sortable fact is whether the firm publishes the retailers and client types it works with, and a figure about the scope of that work. Retailer relationships are the deliverable in this category, and naming them in public is a claim the retailer can contradict, which is what makes it worth something.

Mars United is first on that criterion. Read at marsunited.com on 21 October 2026, it describes itself as "a global United Commerce company, dedicated to driving growth through shoppers for brands and retailers", and names its services as Strategy and Analytics, Digital Commerce, Retail Consultancy, Content and Experiences, and a technology platform called Marilyn. It publishes fourteen client logos under "Trusted by the World's Most Respected Companies", including consumer goods names such as Campbell's, Conagra and Tillamook alongside retailers including Walmart and 7-Eleven. It publishes a figure of "12 leading retailer networks across four global regions" and a capability audit covering "89 capabilities at 27 leading platforms", plus a case citing a 26 percent sales increase. It publishes no fees.

Two honest qualifications. The site never uses the words CPG or consumer packaged goods, so a buyer searching that exact phrase is matching on the client list rather than on the firm's own vocabulary. And themarsagency.com, the name many brand teams will have in their notes, returns a 301 redirect to marsunited.com, read on 21 October 2026, with the copyright line naming Mars Advertising, Inc. If a colleague or an assistant gave you The Mars Agency, that is a renamed firm and the older recommendation has not caught up.

Below Mars United, this page ranks nobody, because the rest of the category publishes neither a fee nor a named retailer relationship, and ranking shopper agencies by award counts would be ranking them by the one thing that has no relationship to whether your product sells.

The five questions that sort a CPG shortlist

Which retailer platforms do you work in, logged in, this month. Not which ones the firm understands. Which ones its people have credentials for. The answer separates two thirds of the market.

What do you do about the digital shelf. Title, images, bullets, attributes, availability, reviews and the search ranking inside the retailer. This is the highest return work in packaged goods marketing and the least glamorous, so ask whether the firm staffs it or subcontracts it.

How do you handle trade funds. A large share of a CPG budget is trade money with rules attached. A firm that has no view on how trade and marketing money interact is working on a fraction of your spend.

What is the measure, given that you cannot see the purchase. Retailer point of sale data, panel data, share of category, availability percentage. A proposal measured on impressions has chosen a number it can control over a number that matters.

Who owns the retail media accounts. The same question as every other category and it bites harder here, because retail media accounts are tied to the retailer relationship and are painful to move.

The aisle that has no shelf and no planogram

Packaged goods brands have spent a century learning to win the moment of choice in a physical place. A new moment of choice has appeared and it has no shelf to buy. A shopper asks an assistant which brand of a thing is best, or which is worth the price, and gets two or three brand names in a sentence. There is no slotting fee, no end cap, no retail media bid, and no report from your agency about who got named.

AI Knows Us is the instrument for that one moment. We do not run shopper marketing, retail media or packaging, and we would be the wrong supplier for every job in the four categories above. We take the questions a shopper in your category asks, run them across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and report which answers name your brand, which name a competitor, and which name a retailer's own label instead of a brand at all. Our limits are published and that is what to hold us to: at aiknowsus.com/pricing, read 23 October 2026, Growth at 299 dollars a month covers 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers across all five surfaces, and Scale at 599 dollars covers 300. SEO Start at 149 dollars renders zero buyer questions, zero credits and zero engines, so it is not the plan for this.

The thing that makes this worth a brand manager's attention is the private label finding. In several categories the answer names the retailer's own brand, which means the assistant is doing to you what the planogram does, in a place you are not bidding.

What brand teams ask before hiring a CPG agency

Should a shopper agency and a brand agency be the same firm. Rarely. The skills are genuinely different and the one firm that claims both usually staffs one properly. Appoint both and make the brand agency hand over the assets in formats the shopper agency can use.

How much of the budget belongs in retail media. Enough to defend your search ranking inside the retailers that carry most of your volume, before any of it goes to brand reach. Availability first and attention second, in the budget split as well as in the strategy deck.

Is a direct to consumer channel worth building. As a data and testing asset, often yes. As a volume channel for a low price frequently bought product, the arithmetic is hard and the agency recommending it should show you the arithmetic.

How long before a shopper programme shows. Digital shelf fixes can move availability and conversion inside a quarter. Category share moves over a year or more. Hold the firm to the fast one.

The levers themselves, and the order to pull them, are on our page about what happens when an assistant names your retailer instead of your brand. No other page on this site links to that one, measured on 21 October 2026 across 2,411 stored bodies against 2,325 live pages, with my own wave excluded. 965 of those 2,325 pages, 41.5 percent, have no inbound link from anywhere on the site, and that figure is an upper bound, because a body we cannot read cannot be counted as a linker.
