Best email marketing app for Shopify: four listings read on 22 October 2026, and the store size each one suits
Shopify Messaging, Klaviyo, Omnisend and Mailchimp all rate 4.7 or 4.8 on the App Store, so the rating will not pick for you; the depth of segmentation, SMS and your list size will.

The best email marketing app for Shopify depends on the size of your store and how far you want to segment. For a new or small store, Shopify Messaging, Shopify's own app, is the simplest start because it runs inside the admin. Once you want deeper segmentation, more flows and email and SMS on one customer profile, the three most reviewed third-party apps are Klaviyo, Omnisend and Mailchimp. On 22 October 2026 all four rated between 4.7 and 4.8 stars on the Shopify App Store, so ratings will not separate them. Choose on the five questions below, then test one flow before you move your whole list.
The four listings, as they read on 22 October 2026
| App | Developer | Rating (reviews) | Pricing line on the listing | Launched |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Messaging | Shopify | 4.8 (4,708) | Free to install, additional charges may apply | 14 April 2020 |
| Klaviyo: Email Marketing & SMS | Klaviyo | 4.7 (3,405) | Free to install | 20 September 2012 |
| Omnisend Email Marketing & SMS | Omnisend | 4.7 (3,195) | Free plan available | 10 March 2014 |
| Mailchimp Email SMS Marketing | Intuit Mailchimp | 4.8 (1,524) | Free plan available | 28 November 2018 |
Ratings and review counts change daily, and each vendor sets its own prices, which we do not restate. Open each listing's pricing tab on the day you decide. Every app's paid tiers scale with the size of your list or the number of messages, so price the plan at the list size you expect in a year, not today.
What each one is built for
Shopify Messaging
This is the app many guides still call Shopify Email. The listing now names it Shopify Messaging and describes "email, SMS, and WhatsApp campaigns all in one place". Because Shopify builds it, it reads your products, discounts and customer segments directly, and it works with Shopify Flow, Shopify Admin and Shopify Forms. Its feature list covers abandoned cart, browse abandonment, welcome, follow-up and win-back emails. For a store that wants good email without another vendor, it is the natural first choice. Our page on Shopify's built-in email automations goes through each one.
Klaviyo
Klaviyo's listing describes email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns, with push notifications in its feature list. New stores get a guided setup with a sign-up form and a welcome email. It lists integrations with Checkout, Customer accounts, Shopify Flow, Aftership, Gorgias, Recharge, Typeform and the Meta and TikTok ad platforms. Its strength is segmentation on behaviour and purchase data, which matters most once a store has enough customers to split them into groups.
Omnisend
Omnisend's listing pairs email and SMS with pop-ups, landing pages and push notifications, and it is the only one of the four with a demo store linked from the listing. It works with Checkout, Shopify Flow, Aftership, Gorgias, Justuno, Loox, Recharge and Yotpo. Note that its listing showed English as its only language on the day we read it, against twenty or more for Shopify Messaging, which matters if you write to customers in several languages.
Mailchimp
Intuit Mailchimp's app lists email, SMS, social media campaigns, pop-ups, forms and landing pages. It works with QuickBooks Online, judge.me, Smile.io and Yotpo among others. It suits a business that already runs Mailchimp for other parts of the company and wants the store in the same account.
Five questions that pick the right app
1. How big is your list, and how big will it be?
Under a few thousand contacts, the built-in app usually does everything a store needs. Larger lists with several customer types are where a third-party app's segmentation starts to earn its fee. Check how each plan counts contacts before you compare prices.
2. Do you want SMS on the same customer profile?
All four listings now include SMS. If texts matter to your store, test sending, consent capture and the cost per message in the countries you sell to. Our review of SMS apps for Shopify covers the questions to ask.
3. Which other apps must it talk to?
Read the "Works with" line on each listing. A subscription store on Recharge, a support team on Gorgias, or a reviews app such as Yotpo or Loox will narrow the choice quickly, because an app that cannot see those events cannot email on them.
4. How deep do your flows need to go?
Every app covers welcome, abandoned cart and win-back. The difference is in the branches: a different email for first-time and repeat buyers, a split by product category, a pause when a customer has an open support ticket. Write down the three flows you will build first and check each app can build them.
5. Where does the revenue figure come from?
Every app shows revenue "from email", and each counts it with its own attribution window. Compare apps on orders you can check in Shopify's own reports, using UTM-tagged links, rather than on each dashboard's number.
A sensible starting set of flows
- Welcome for new subscribers: who you are, what you sell, and any first-order offer.
- Abandoned checkout: one reminder within hours, one a day later, with the items shown.
- Browse abandonment: a lighter reminder for known visitors who viewed a product but did not add it.
- Post-purchase: thanks, how to use the product, and a review request after delivery.
- Win-back: timed to your normal reorder cycle.
Build these in whichever app you choose before you plan a single newsletter. Flows run every day without you.
Switching apps without losing the list
If you move from one app to another, export subscribers with their consent status and the date they subscribed, and import them with that status intact. Rebuild flows in the new app before you switch the old ones off, and run both for a short overlap so nobody falls between them. Warm the new sending domain by emailing your most engaged customers first. Our guide to email marketing software for ecommerce has a fuller checklist for testing any platform.
The same question, asked of an assistant
Store owners increasingly ask ChatGPT or Gemini "what is the best email app for Shopify?" before they open the App Store, and shoppers ask the same assistants where to buy a product. The second question is the one that touches your sales: an assistant names the stores it can read about on review sites, in press and on their own pages. AI Knows Us checks whether those answers name your store, so your email list is not the only place new customers find you.
Questions about email marketing apps for Shopify
Is Shopify Email still available?
Yes, under a new name. The App Store listing now calls it Shopify Messaging, covering email, SMS and WhatsApp. Its listing says it is free to install, with additional charges that may apply.
Is Klaviyo better than Shopify Messaging?
Not for every store. Shopify Messaging is simpler and sits inside the admin. Klaviyo gives deeper segmentation and more integrations, which matters more as a list and catalogue grow.
Which Shopify email apps have a free plan?
On 22 October 2026, Omnisend and Mailchimp showed "Free plan available" on their listings. Shopify Messaging and Klaviyo showed "Free to install". Check each pricing tab for current limits.
Can I use two email apps at once?
You can, but customers may get duplicate messages and consent records can drift apart. Use two only during a migration, and switch off the old flows once the new ones are live.
Do these apps send SMS as well?
All four listings include SMS campaigns. Check the countries supported and the cost per message before you rely on it.
