Best Facebook marketing and advertising tools, and why the two free ones from Meta do most of the job
Meta publishes the publishing tool, the ads tool and the analytics for nothing. A paid tool is worth buying for one of three specific reasons, and if none of them is yours you are paying for a second login.

The first thing to settle about Facebook marketing tools is that Meta publishes the three main ones itself and charges nothing for them. Meta Business Suite schedules posts and stories to a Page and an Instagram account, holds a shared inbox for both, and reports reach and engagement. Ads Manager builds, targets and reports every paid campaign. Meta Business Manager holds the assets, the Pages, the ad accounts, the pixel and the people who have access to each. Nothing on the paid shortlist replaces any of the three. Every paid tool sits on top of them and reads the same API.
So the criterion here is not which paid tool has more features. It is what a paid tool does that the free first party set does not, and there are exactly three honest answers.
The three reasons to pay for a tool on top of Meta's own
You run more than Facebook. Business Suite covers Facebook and Instagram and stops. If LinkedIn, TikTok, X, Pinterest, YouTube or Google Business Profile are also in the plan, a cross network scheduler earns its money by giving you one queue and one report instead of six. This is the common case and the honest reason most people buy.
Somebody has to approve before it publishes. Business Suite has no real review step. If a compliance reader, a franchisor or a client sees posts before they go out, you are buying an approval workflow. Later publishes approval flows from its Growth tier. Sprout Social and Hootsuite both build their pricing around seats for exactly this reason.
You need history Meta has aged out. Native insight windows are short. If the question is how this quarter compares with the same quarter last year, you need a tool that stored it. Later publishes three months of analytics history on Starter and up to a year on Growth. Metricool publishes thirty days on its free tier and unlimited history from its paid tiers.
If none of those three is your situation, the correct tool for Facebook marketing is Meta's own and the correct spend is zero.

| Tool | Priced by | Entry allowance | What it adds over Business Suite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer | Channel | Free forever for 3 channels at 10 scheduled posts per channel; Essentials from 5 dollars a month per channel with unlimited scheduling and one user | Other networks in one queue. One user account, so no approvals |
| Later | Social set of 8 profiles | Starter at 18.75 dollars a month billed yearly: 8 profiles, 1 user, 30 posts per profile, 3 months of analytics, no extra sets or users available | Other networks, analytics history, approvals from the tier above |
| Metricool | Brand | Free for 1 brand at 20 posts a month with 5 competitor profiles and 30 days of analytics; Starter from 16 euro for 10 brands and unlimited publishing | Competitor benchmarking and unlimited history for very little money |
| Hootsuite | User seat | Standard at 99 dollars for up to 10 social accounts; unlimited accounts from Professional at 199 | Seats, a shared inbox across networks, brand and competitor monitoring |
| Sprout Social | User seat | Standard at 199 dollars per seat a month on annual billing for 5 social profiles; unlimited profiles from Professional at 299 | Review management, keyword and location monitoring, paid insights higher up |
The advertising half, where the tool question is different
For Facebook ads there is no paid tool that places a campaign better than Ads Manager, because Ads Manager is where the campaign is placed. What third party ad tools sell is reporting across Facebook and other ad platforms in one view, bulk editing of large account structures, and creative rotation at volume. All three are real problems above a certain spend and none of them is a problem at two thousand dollars a month.
What to watch instead at low spend is the thing a tool cannot fix: the audience and the pixel. The campaign structure that wastes the least money on a small Facebook budget, and the radius question underneath it, is worked through on the live page about Facebook advertising for a small business. And the gap between what Ads Manager reports as a click and what your site records as a session, which is the single most common source of a panicked phone call about a tool, is set out in what you are actually paying for when you buy Facebook ad traffic. On today's measurement no other page on this site links to that one.
How to test a shortlist in one week
- Connect the Page and the Instagram account on day one. Reconnection is the step that fails, and it fails on permissions rather than on the tool.
- Publish one Reel and one story through the tool. These are the two formats most likely to go out as a phone reminder rather than publishing on their own. If your schedule depends on either, test the exact format.
- Pull last month's report and compare it to Business Suite. If the numbers differ, find out which metric definition changed before you trust a quarter of it.
- Add the second person. Whether your plan allows a second user at all is a tier question. Later's Starter does not sell one at any price.
Questions buyers ask about Facebook tools
Is there a free Facebook marketing tool? Three of them, from Meta: Business Suite, Ads Manager and Business Manager. Buffer and Metricool also publish free third party tiers.
Do I need Business Manager if I have a Page? You need it the moment somebody other than you touches the account, because it is where access is granted and withdrawn. An agency that asks for your personal login instead of Business Manager access is a red flag worth walking away from.
Can a tool lower my cost per result? Bidding and delivery happen inside Meta's auction, not inside a scheduler. A tool helps by making more creative variants reach the auction and by making the reporting fast enough to act on.
The Facebook marketing question nobody's tool reports on
Every tool above is pointed at a feed, and feeds are no longer the only place a buyer forms a shortlist. Someone looking for what you sell now opens an assistant and asks who to use. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews answer with two or three business names, and they build those names from reviews, roundups, directories and forum threads rather than from your Page. There is no Page to connect and no post to attribute, so Business Suite and every tool in the table report nothing about it. Measuring whether you are one of the named businesses is a separate category of purchase and it is the category we are in.
What a buyer should know is how much the market already charges for that work. Hook Agency, a named United States agency, publishes its line items on hookagency.com/pricing, read on 21 October 2026: local SEO at 2,800 dollars a month, pay per click management from 2,000 dollars a month scaling with service scope and ad spend, and answer engine optimisation at 4,000 dollars a month, or two thousand when added to an SEO package. The same shop charges twice as much for being named in AI answers as it does for managing a Google Ads account. That is one agency's published view of where the scarce skill sits this year.
On the criterion used throughout this page, what the thing costs against the free first party alternative, AI Knows Us is the option for that surface, and the comparison is different here because Meta publishes no free product that measures it and neither does anybody else. Our plan table renders in six currencies on the server. The unit is one buyer question asked on one app once, with a Claude check costing three of those credits and most costing one. Growth at 299 dollars a month publishes 100 buyer questions watched, 1,200 scheduled answers and all five engines, and it is the cheapest plan we sell that reads all five. The 149 dollar tier publishes zero questions, zero credits and zero engines, so it reads none of them.
Where rivals are ahead, plainly. Ahrefs publishes Brand Radar with per surface prompt counts and a per check rate on ahrefs.com/brand-radar, read the same day, including that Claude consumes eight checks per update, and we publish neither of those figures. It reads Copilot and we do not. Jasper sells GEO and AI Optimization inside a marketing suite and HubSpot ships AEO in beta inside its marketing hub, both read 21 October 2026, so a team already paying either of them gets a version of this measurement without adding a login, and we are a separate login. Buffer and Metricool publish free tiers for the social half and our cheapest plan that reads the engines is 299 dollars a month.
Running the check by hand costs nothing. Ask two assistants what a buyer would ask, without naming your business, and read the names that come back.
