Best free backlink checker tools, and exactly where each free tier stops

Ranked on the one thing a vendor puts in writing: the published limit on its free tier. Four of the five limits are numbers you can check today, and the fifth vendor would not serve us a page.

Free backlink checkers are not cut down versions of the paid product. Each one is a specific slice of the paid product, chosen by the vendor because that slice is the one most likely to make you buy the rest. Knowing which slice you are being handed is the difference between answering your question for nothing and wasting a week discovering the free tier was never going to answer it.

So the ordering here is on one criterion, applied to everybody including us: what limit does the vendor publish, in writing, on its own free tier? A number in public is a commitment. A free tool with no published limit is a tool whose limit you find out when you hit it.

The free tiers, and the published limit on each

Free toolThe limit its own page publishesWhat it will not do
Ahrefs Webmaster ToolsWeb Analytics, Site Audit and Site Explorer are free for websites you verify. Site Explorer shows up to 1,000 backlinks and up to 1,000 keywords at once. Site Audit allows 5,000 crawl credits per verified project each month, and only HTML pages returning a 200 consume a credit. The number of sites you may verify is unlimited.Competitor data. Its page states analysis of competing, unverified websites requires a paid subscription.
Semrush free Backlink CheckerIts page states the free checker needs no account, and that paid Backlink Analytics gives unlimited results. No numeric free cap is published on that page.Publish its own free row limit, which means you discover it in use rather than before.
Google Search ConsoleFree for any property you can verify. The Links report help page states it is not a comprehensive list of every link on your site, caps on screen tables at 1,000 rows, and allows an export of up to 100,000 rows on the latest links and sample links slices.Show links to a site you do not own, flag nofollow, or separate subdomains, since it groups by root domain.
Majestic free searchIts page describes a free demo search on one site every few days, with features similar to its Lite Site Explorer. No quantities are published for the Lite tier.Give a repeatable daily workflow at the free level.
Moz Link ExplorerNot quoted. moz.com would not serve a page to our fetcher on 21 October 2026, so we have no reading of its current free limit.Nothing. The gap is in our reading, not in the product.

The pattern in that table, and what it tells you to do

Four of the five free tiers are generous about your own site and restrictive about everybody else's. That is not an accident. A vendor can verify your ownership cheaply and show you your own data at almost no cost, while a competitor's link profile is the expensive output of a web wide crawl and is therefore the thing behind the paywall.

So the workable free stack is: Search Console for what Google itself recorded about your site, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for a second opinion on the same site with its 1,000 backlink view, and a single Semrush or Majestic free lookup when you need one number about one third party domain. That combination answers every question about your own links and no question about anybody else's.

The moment your question becomes comparative, free stops. If you need the domains linking to three competitors and not to you, the honest advice is to buy one month of one paid tool, pull the export, and cancel. One month of real data beats six weeks of assembling guesses from free lookups.

Judging a free checker that publishes nothing

Plenty of free backlink checkers are lead capture pages wrapped around somebody else's data. Four checks separate the useful ones:

Does it name the index behind it? A tool reselling an API should say whose. Does it publish a row limit before you search, rather than after? Does it work without an email address, which tells you whether the tool or your contact detail is the product? And does the number it returns move when you check the same domain a week later, which tells you whether anything is actually being recrawled?

Where each of these beats us, plainly

All of them. We publish no free backlink checker, no link index and no crawler, and we never will, because it is not our product. Anyone who arrived here to check links for nothing should take the stack in the paragraph above and go.

Our own rendered pricing page carries no SSO, no white label, no SOC 2 and no ISO line, and covers one business per plan except on the agency tier, which covers ten. On security paperwork and on link data alike, the suites above are better placed than we are.

What we do give away, and what it measures instead

Our free tier is pointed at a different question. AI Knows Us asks the buyer questions you choose across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and reports which businesses were named in the answer. The rendered pricing page states that every plan starts with the same free scan, that it needs no account, and that the free plan stays free. One of the rules behind it is published too, and it matters for whether the result means anything: the buyer questions never name the business being measured, so the engine is not primed to produce the answer we hoped for.

The published arithmetic is on the same page: one credit is one buyer question asked on one AI app once, most checks use one credit, a Claude check uses 3, and a failed check refunds its credits. The US floor is $149 a month for SEO Start, and llms.txt states that plan watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so Growth at $299 is the cheapest plan that reads all five surfaces.

Ahrefs is the fair comparison here and it is ahead of us in two measurable ways. Its Brand Radar page states that each prompt is checked daily on every selected platform, where our published cadence is weekly on your priority questions, and it lists AI Mode and Copilot, which we do not read. What we publish more precisely is the cost of the expensive engine: Ahrefs states Claude consumes 8 checks per update, Rankscale publishes a flat typical 0.25 credits per engine per prompt with no per engine weight, and we publish the exact credit weight. That is the single criterion on which we are the clearest, and it is not a claim about which product is better.

The reason a free link is free is almost never the tool, and the longer version of that argument is set out in our piece on free backlinks, and why the work is the reason rather than the tool. We measured durable inbound links ourselves on 21 October 2026, reading 2,169 stored bodies (1,797 drafts plus 372 fetched) against all 2,082 pages tracked on this site: 932 of them, 44.8% of 2,082, carry no inbound link written into another page's body. No other page on this site links to that one, which is why it is the link at the bottom of this page.

Questions buyers ask about free backlink checkers

Is a free backlink checker enough for a small site?

For your own site, yes. Search Console plus the free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools view covers who links to you, inside the published 1,000 row and 1,000 backlink limits. Those limits only start to bite above a few thousand referring domains.

Can I see a competitor's backlinks for free?

Not properly. Ahrefs states on its own page that unverified competitor analysis needs a paid subscription, and Search Console only covers properties you own. One free lookup per competitor per vendor is the ceiling, and it gives you a headline number rather than a prospect list.

Why does the free tool show fewer links than the paid one?

Because the free view is a row capped window on the same index. Ahrefs publishes the window at 1,000 backlinks at once. The index is identical; the slice is smaller.

Which free tool is most honest about its limits?

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, on the published evidence. It names the free products, the row cap, the crawl credit allowance, what consumes a credit and what does not, and the fact that competitor data is excluded. That is four checkable numbers where most vendors publish none.

What question does none of them answer?

Whether an assistant names you when a buyer asks it who to use. No link index holds that, because the answer is generated per asker and leaves no link behind. It has to be asked directly, which is a separate tool and a separate purchase.
