Best free YouTube SEO tools compared, and which ones work on the video rather than the keyword

Most free YouTube SEO tools are keyword tools wearing a different label. These are the free ones that work on the video itself, the title, the description, the chapters and the captions, plus the one free source that is better than all of them.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

Two different questions arrive at this search and the free answers are different. One is the keyword question, which is answered separately and linked at the end. The other is the video question, which is what this page is about: the title, the description, the tags, the chapters, the captions and the thumbnail on a video you have already decided to make.

The criterion on this page. Is the free tool reading YouTube's own data about your channel, or is it modelling the public surface? Measured data about you is free and it is the better input. Modelled data about everybody is what the paid tiers sell, and it should never be read to two decimal places.

The free source that beats every tool on this page

YouTube Studio is free for every channel and it holds the only observed data in this category. Its Research tab reports the search terms viewers actually used, both across YouTube and inside your own audience. Its analytics report impressions, click-through rate, average view duration and the traffic sources that brought people in. Nothing on the rest of this page can see any of that, because it is yours and YouTube does not publish it.

The practical consequence: do the Studio pass first, every time. A free third-party tool is worth adding only for the jobs Studio cannot do, which are the bulk mechanical ones and the competitor ones.

The free tiers, with the allowance each vendor publishes

YouTube StudioFree for any channel. Publishes your impressions, click-through rate, watch time, traffic sources and the Research tab's search terms.Deciding what to make, and judging what you made. First tool, not last.
vidIQvidiq.com/pricing lists "Free $0" with "150 AI Credits every month". Its Boost tier publishes credit options of 2,000, 2,500 and 3,000, with "2,000 AI Credits monthly" as the default, and lists "Click-worthy thumbnails in minutes" and "Optimization to drive more views". The FAQ suggests Enterprise if you are "managing more than 3 channels", which is a suggestion rather than a published cap on the lower tiers.Bulk mechanical work and competitor browsing, inside a monthly credit allowance you can check before signing up.
YouTube's own search boxFree, no account. The suggestions are ordered by YouTube itself.Phrasing a title in the words people actually type, at zero cost and with no modelling in between.
The videos already rankingFree. Their titles, descriptions, chapters and captions are public.Reading what the algorithm is currently rewarding for your exact term. Tedious, and the most reliable free signal there is.

So the ranking, on the stated criterion. YouTube Studio first, because it is the only measured source and it costs nothing. vidIQ second among the third-party free tiers, on the narrow ground that it is the one in this set that publishes an exact monthly number for its free allowance, which is checkable before you commit. Every other free YouTube extension we looked at publishes a feature list and not an allowance, so on this criterion they cannot be ranked at all, and this page ranks nobody third rather than inventing an order.

What a free YouTube SEO tool cannot do, whatever the tier

It cannot see YouTube's search volume, because YouTube does not publish any. Every volume figure in every YouTube tool, free or paid, is an estimate built from the public surface. That is not a criticism; an estimate is useful. It is a reason not to choose between two videos on a difference of fifteen percent in a modelled number.

It also cannot see suggested-video traffic for anybody but you, which on most channels is the larger half of the views.

The surface a YouTube tool does not watch, and who measures it

If somebody asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Overviews a question your channel answers, the assistant composes a reply and sometimes names a source. None of that happens on YouTube, so no YouTube tool reads it, free or paid, and there is no index of it anywhere.

AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and is not in the ranking above, because a creator who came here for a free YouTube tool should use Studio and vidIQ's free tier. We are not a YouTube tool. What we do is ask your buyer's question in all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses and sources were named. From the rendered text of our pricing page, read 21 October 2026: "One credit is one buyer question, asked on one AI app, once", "Most checks use one credit", "A Claude check uses 3, because Claude costs us more to run". Our llms.txt the same day puts SEO Start at $149 with 0 buyer questions, 0 credits and 0 engines, so the first tier that actually reads the five surfaces is Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. Nothing we sell is free, which is the honest place to say so on a page about free tools.

Where a rival beats us. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read 21 October 2026, covers ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, and publishes its unit cost at "$0.020/check" with "Claude consumes 8 checks per update". AI Mode and Copilot are surfaces we do not read. Its own page also says its prompts are both "real prompts people ask" and "modeled from real user searches in Ahrefs' keyword database", which are two different claims, and the difference between modelled and observed is the single most useful question to put to any vendor in this category.

A caution about any figure you fetch yourself

A 200 response can still be the wrong page, and a vendor can decline to serve you entirely. On 21 October 2026 moz.com would not serve this machine at all and seoptimer.com returned 403, so neither appears above. The vidIQ pricing page served us its credit allowances and withheld its prices from the text we could read, which is why this page quotes the allowance and not the price.

For the keyword half of this question, where two free tiers publish an exact monthly number and the best free source is again inside Studio: free YouTube keyword tools compared, and what each free tier actually allows. On 21 October 2026 we read 2,411 page bodies on this site against 2,325 live pages and 971 of them, 41.8 percent, had no inbound link from any body we could read, which is an upper bound rather than a count. We measured that target specifically: no other page on this site links to that one.

Questions about free YouTube SEO tools

Is a free extension enough?

For one channel, usually yes, as long as you do the Studio pass first. The paid tiers buy you volume of mechanical work and competitor breadth, not better data about you.

Do tags still matter?

Far less than titles, thumbnails and the first two lines of the description. Spending an hour on tags is the most common way a free tool wastes your time.

Should I pay for a keyword volume figure for YouTube?

Only if you are making many videos a month and need to triage. For one or two, Studio's Research tab plus the search suggestions give you the same decision for nothing.

What about captions and chapters?

Both are free, both are read, and both are routinely skipped. Upload a corrected transcript rather than leaving the automatic one, and write chapters as the phrases somebody would search for.
