Best insurance lead generation companies compared, and why this category publishes nothing a buyer can check
Two of the largest vendors were read today. One publishes a cost FAQ with no answer under it. That is the most useful finding available about this market and it should change how an agent buys.

An insurance agent buying leads is buying the least transparent product in marketing. This page tried to rank the vendors on what each publishes about cost, exclusivity and credits. Two of the biggest were read in full today and the honest result is that there is nothing to rank them on, which is itself worth knowing before you wire a deposit.
What was actually read, and what was on the page
EverQuote. everquote.com/agents returned HTTP 404 Not Found on 21 October 2026. The home page, read the same day, carries "For Agents" and "FAQ for Agents" links that route to go.everquote.com/pro without describing the product anywhere on the page. No cost per lead, no cost per call, no minimum budget and no exclusivity terms are published. The only pricing statement on the page is addressed to consumers, "EverQuote service is free to consumers", which tells an agent nothing about what the agent pays.
SmartFinancial. smartfinancial.com/agents returned a 301 redirect to agents.smartfinancial.com, read on 21 October 2026. That page publishes no cost per lead, no minimum deposit and no exclusivity terms. It lists "Reliable Cost Per Policy" as a benefit with no figure attached, and "Geography, Filters, & Budget Control" as a feature. It names an "Agent Friendly Credit Policy" and gives no details of it. And it carries a FAQ headed "How much does it cost?" with no answer rendered beneath it, which is the single most telling thing either page contains. A testimonial from one agent says the company "does refund the calls promptly after request is submitted", and one agent's experience is not a published policy.
So this page ranks nobody first, and says so
No vendor can be ranked first on this page because no vendor in the category publishes a figure a buyer can check. Not a cost per lead, not a minimum deposit, not an exclusivity guarantee, not a credit window. Every ranked list of insurance lead vendors you will find is therefore ordered on review scores, affiliate arrangements or someone's opinion, and none of those is a fact about what you will be charged or what you will receive.
That is not an accusation of bad faith. Lead prices in this market move weekly by state, by line and by filter, which is a genuine reason not to publish a rate card. It is still a reason to go into the purchase differently.
What to do instead, and it is five questions in writing
Shared or exclusive, and shared with how many. The number drives your contact rate more than anything else you will be told. Get it in the agreement, not on the call.
The exact credit policy, with its window. Wrong number, out of state, wrong line, already bound, deceased. Which of those are creditable and within how many hours. "Agent Friendly Credit Policy" with no detail is not an answer.
Can filters be changed mid month without a new deposit. State, line, age band, prior carrier. If a filter change costs you a new minimum, your ability to react to bad batches is gone.
Leads or calls, priced separately. A transferred live call and a form fill are different products often sold under one agreement. Price them separately or you will not know which one worked.
What is the smallest deposit that is genuinely refundable. Start at the floor, measure for a fortnight on your own contact rate, then scale. Most agents buy too much of an untested source.
The arithmetic, which is yours and not theirs
Multiply the lead price by the number of leads you need to bind one policy, honestly measured on shared leads rather than hoped for. Compare that to the first year commission, not the lifetime value, because lifetime value assumes a retention rate you have not earned yet from a cold bought lead. If acquisition exceeds first year commission, the channel only works if your retention is genuinely strong, and that is a claim about your service rather than about the lead source.
The question a lead vendor cannot help with
A growing number of insurance buyers never fill in a comparison form. They ask an assistant who to use for small business cover or for a specific line in their state, and get two or three agency names back in prose. There is no form, no click and nothing in anybody's lead report. If your agency is not one of the names, you did not lose a bid. You were not in the room.
AI Knows Us exists for that single question, and we are not a lead vendor. We sell no leads, transfer no calls and hold no consumer data. We watch the buying questions your market asks across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and report which answers name your agency, which name a competitor and which name nobody at all. The limits to judge us on are published rather than quoted on a call. At aiknowsus.com/pricing, read 23 October 2026, Growth at 299 dollars a month covers 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers across all five surfaces, Scale at 599 dollars covers 300 questions and 3,500 scheduled answers, and a Claude check costs 3 credits where most checks cost 1. SEO Start at 149 dollars renders zero buyer questions, zero credits and zero engines, so it does not do this job and the floor price is not the price of this work. The page also publishes a free scan, in its own words "Run a free scan on your own domain and read what the AI apps say about you today", with "No account needed".
Where a rival beats us, and it is the fact a procurement reviewer will care about most. Our rendered pricing text carries no SSO, no SOC 2, no ISO certification, no white label and no data processing agreement, checked on 21 October 2026. Vendors in our own category do publish some of those. If you are buying under a security review, that absence is the more important fact about us than anything else on this page. For an agency under a carrier's compliance review, that absence is the fact to put in front of them before anything else on this page.
Scope
This page is about buying leads. It deliberately does not target insurance marketing, insurance marketing firm or insurance agency marketing, which an existing page on this site already pools alongside compliant claims, trust signals and local search, and that page is the right one if your question is how to build your own demand rather than buy contacts.
What agents ask
Are bought insurance leads worth it. As a supplement to referrals and renewals, often yes. As a primary channel they are a treadmill whose speed the vendor controls.
How fast must I call. Seconds on a shared lead. Shared leads reward only the fastest dialler, and if that is not you, buy calls instead.
What should I build with my own money first. The renewal calendar and the referral ask, because both are free and neither can be repriced by a vendor.
If the channel you are actually under investing in is the renewal cycle, our page on email marketing for insurance agents and the two piles the law sorts your mail into. No other page on this site links to that one, measured on 21 October 2026 across 2,490 stored bodies (2,118 published drafts plus 372 fetched live pages) against 2,404 live pages, with my own wave excluded. 978 of those 2,404 pages, 40.7 percent, carry no inbound link from anywhere on the site, and that figure is an upper bound, because a body we cannot read cannot be counted as a linker.
