Best link building tools compared, by the one job each one actually does
Four separate jobs are sold as one category, which is why buyers end up with the wrong subscription. Here is which tool owns each job, on published limits, and the job none of them covers.

Link building software is four products wearing one name, and almost every bad purchase in this category comes from buying the wrong one of the four. The jobs are: find prospects, judge a prospect, contact the prospect and track the reply, and confirm the link went live and stayed live. A tool that is excellent at prospecting is usually ordinary at outreach, and the two are priced as though they were the same thing.
This page sorts the category by job, on one criterion applied to everybody including us: what does the vendor publish on its own page that a buyer can check before paying? A crawl figure, a row cap, a refresh interval. Not a review score and not a promise.
The four jobs, and what to buy for each
| The job | What to buy | The published fact that decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Find prospects at scale | Ahrefs, Semrush or Majestic | All three publish a crawl. Ahrefs states 493 B pages, 285 M domains and fresh index data every 15 minutes. Semrush states more than 43 trillion backlinks and 390 million referring domains, refreshed at least hourly. Majestic publishes live counters: 187,673,161,840 unique URLs crawled in a Fresh Index covering the past 120 days on 21 October 2026. |
| Judge whether a prospect is worth contacting | The same tool, used differently | Each vendor publishes its own authority metric: Domain Rating, Authority Score, Trust Flow and Citation Flow. Google uses none of them, so they sort a list and do not value a link. |
| Contact and track the reply | An outreach system, not a link tool | This is a mailbox, a sequence and a record of who said what. It is the job where the link suites are weakest and where a dedicated outreach product earns its fee. |
| Confirm the link is live and still live | A monitor | Refresh interval decides this, not index size. Ahrefs publishes a 15 minute index refresh and Semrush publishes at least hourly, which is the only number that matters for catching a removal. |
Why the prospecting job dominates the pricing
Three of the four jobs could be done with a spreadsheet and a mailbox. The first one cannot, because it needs a crawl of the web, and that is the asset the money is actually buying. This explains an otherwise confusing market: the expensive products are the ones with crawlers, and the cheap ones are workflow wrappers around data they do not own.
It also explains the right buying order. Buy the crawl first, because nothing substitutes for it. Add outreach software only when the volume of live conversations exceeds what one person can hold in a mailbox, which for most businesses is later than the sales pitch suggests.
The tools that promise to do the building for you
A section of this category sells automation of the placement itself rather than of the research. Google's own spam policies page defines link spam as the practice of creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings, and lists among its examples using automated programs or services to create links to your site. That sentence is published by the search engine whose rankings are the point of the purchase, so it is the first thing to read before buying anything in that part of the market.
The distinction worth holding is between automating the research and automating the placement. Finding a thousand prospects automatically is ordinary good practice. Placing a thousand links automatically is the thing the policy names.
Where every tool here beats us, said plainly
We sell no link building tool. We have no crawler, no prospect database, no outreach product and no monitor, and on the subject of this page all three suites named above are ahead of us because they built that infrastructure and we did not. A reader who came to buy link building software should buy from the table and ignore the rest of this page.
Our rendered pricing page also carries no SSO, no white label, no SOC 2 and no ISO line, and covers one business per plan outside the agency tier, which covers ten.
The link that is not a link, and the tool that reads it
Link building rests on an assumption that was true for twenty years: a link is followed by a crawler, which raises a page in a ranked list, which a human then clicks. An AI answer removes the last step and sometimes the first. The assistant reads sources, writes one answer and names two or three businesses, and the reader acts on the names without visiting anything. A company can have the better link profile and lose that moment, because the two are decided differently.
Measuring that moment is our category. AI Knows Us asks the buyer questions you choose across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, reports which businesses the answer named, and lists the sources behind each answer. The published arithmetic, from the rendered pricing page: one credit is one buyer question asked on one AI app once, most checks use one credit, a Claude check uses 3 because Claude costs more to run, and checking 10 questions on 4 AI apps uses 40 credits. The US floor is $149 a month for SEO Start, and llms.txt states that plan watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so Growth at $299 is the cheapest plan that reads all five surfaces.
Ahrefs is the one vendor above that also sells this, and it is ahead of us on two published facts. Its Brand Radar page states each prompt is checked daily on every selected platform, where our published cadence is weekly on priority questions, and it lists AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, so AI Mode and Copilot are two surfaces it reads and we do not. Rankscale names nine engines on its pricing page and publishes a REST API and the removal of its branding from shared dashboards, none of which we offer. The single criterion on which our published figure is the most exact is the cost of the expensive engine: Ahrefs publishes 8 checks per update for Claude, Rankscale publishes a flat typical 0.25 credits per engine per prompt with no per engine weight, and we publish the exact credit weight for ours.
If the plan behind the tools is the part you are missing, the ninety day version with checkpoints is set out in our guide to planning an SEO backlink campaign and measuring what it did. We measured durable inbound links ourselves on 21 October 2026, reading 2,169 stored bodies (1,797 drafts plus 372 fetched) against all 2,082 pages tracked on this site: 932 of them, 44.8% of 2,082, carry no inbound link written into another page's body. No other page on this site links to that one.
Questions buyers ask about link building software
Do I need link building software at all?
You need the crawl. The prospecting job cannot be done without one, and the other three jobs can start in a spreadsheet and a mailbox. Buy the index first and add workflow tools when the conversation volume demands it.
Which link building tool finds the best prospects?
The one with the biggest crawl of the sites in your category, which on published figures means Ahrefs or Semrush for breadth and Majestic when you want the 120 day Fresh Index view of what is new. Each publishes its own numbers and they are not directly comparable, so read them as three descriptions rather than one league table.
Is link building software the same as a link building service?
No, and the two queries are answered separately on this site for that reason. Software hands you a list and a mailbox. A service takes the work away, and vetting one is a different exercise with different questions.
What does Google say about automated link tools?
Its spam policies page defines link spam as creating links primarily to manipulate search rankings and names using automated programs or services to create links to your site as an example. Automating research is not what that sentence describes. Automating placement is.
What do none of these tools measure?
Whether an assistant names your business when a buyer asks it who to use. The answer is written per asker, varies by app and by country, and leaves no link in any index, so it has to be asked for directly.
