Best local SEO for home services compared, and the one listing that outranks every page you write

On this subject a rival beats us outright and the page says so. BrightLocal publishes a free local AI visibility check and our own pricing page names no map pack at all.

A home services business has an unusual SEO situation. One asset outranks everything else you could build, it costs nothing, and most firms spend money on pages while leaving it half finished. The order below is the whole answer and the first item is free.

The order, and item one is not a page

The business profile, finished properly. Correct primary category, every service listed as a service rather than hinted at in prose, real photographs of real vans and real jobs, hours that are true, and the service area set to where you actually go. For a plumber or an electrician this single listing produces more enquiries than every page on the website combined, and the reason is that the enquiry is urgent and local and the listing is what gets shown.

Reviews, continuously, as a habit rather than a campaign. Ask at the end of every job, in person, before you leave. A trickle every week beats forty in one month, which looks exactly like what it is.

One page per service, not one page listing services. Drain cleaning, water heater replacement and emergency callout are three searches with three intents and three prices. A single services page competes for none of them.

Town pages only where you genuinely work, with genuinely different content. Twenty near identical town pages is the most common self inflicted wound in this category. Three real ones with local jobs, local photographs and local detail outperform all twenty.

Then links, from local sources. Suppliers, trade bodies, the local paper, the teams you sponsor. Slow, durable, and uninteresting to competitors who want a shortcut.

Where a rival beats us outright on this subject, and it would be dishonest not to lead with it

This site sells a measurement product and on a local page it is not the strongest option available, so here is the comparison the right way round.

BrightLocal is first on this page's criterion, which is what each vendor publishes free that a local business can check today. Read at brightlocal.com on 21 October 2026, it publishes a tool labelled "FREE TOOL" called the Local AI Visibility Checker, described as "See if AI is recommending you", which lets you "Check your business against ChatGPT and Google AI Mode". It publishes three more free tools on the same page, a Rank Fluctuation Monitor, a Local SERP Checker and a Google Review Link Generator, and describes the set as "No setup, no cost, no SEO expertise required". Its all in one platform is published as "from $31/mo", citations "from $2/citation" and managed services "from $1,299/mo".

One distinction worth getting right, because it is easy to conflate and a planning note given to this writer did conflate it. The free item is the Local AI Visibility Checker. There is a separate paid feature called the Local AI Visibility Tracker, listed under most popular features with a new tag and no published price. Those are two different things and only the Checker is free.

Why it beats us here, stated plainly. Our own pricing page, read the same day, names no Google Business Profile, no local pack and no directory listing anywhere in its rendered text. We do publish a free scan, in the page's own words "Run a free scan on your own domain and read what the AI apps say about you today", with "No account needed". But a domain level scan is not a local check, and for a plumber whose entire market is eleven miles wide, a tool built around the business profile and the local answer is the more relevant purchase. BrightLocal's free Checker covers two engines, ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, where our paid Growth plan at 299 dollars a month covers five. That is the one axis where we are ahead, and on a local page it is the less important one.

One figure deliberately missing. A planning note gave Moz prices for an all in one plan, an AI search plan and Local SEO. moz.com could not be fetched from this machine on 21 October 2026, so no Moz figure is quoted here. That is a failure to verify on this date and not a statement that any Moz figure is wrong.

So where do we fit, honestly

AI Knows Us is not a local SEO tool and this page does not rank it as one. We watch no map pack and no business profile. What we do is watch the buying questions a market asks across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews and report which answers name a business, which name a rival and which name nobody. For a home services firm that is a second order concern behind the profile, the reviews and the service pages, and it becomes a real concern at the point where you are a multi location brand and somebody asking an assistant for a recommendation in a city is a meaningful share of your demand. The limits to judge us on are published rather than quoted on a call. At aiknowsus.com/pricing, read 23 October 2026, Growth at 299 dollars a month covers 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers across all five surfaces, Scale at 599 dollars covers 300 questions and 3,500 scheduled answers, and a Claude check costs 3 credits where most checks cost 1. SEO Start at 149 dollars renders zero buyer questions, zero credits and zero engines, so it does not do this job and the floor price is not the price of this work. The page also publishes a free scan, in its own words "Run a free scan on your own domain and read what the AI apps say about you today", with "No account needed".

Where a rival beats us, and it is the fact a procurement reviewer will care about most. Our rendered pricing text carries no SSO, no SOC 2, no ISO certification, no white label and no data processing agreement, checked on 21 October 2026. Vendors in our own category do publish some of those. If you are buying under a security review, that absence is the more important fact about us than anything else on this page.

The review problem, with Google's own words

Every home services business eventually gets a review it believes is unfair, so here is what the only authority on it actually says. Read at support.google.com/business/answer/4596773 on 21 October 2026, Google says "You can report any review, but only those that violate Google policies are eligible for removal" and warns "Do not report a review just because you disagree with it or dislike it". Evaluation "typically takes several days", and if a flagged review does not qualify, "submit a one-time appeal", with up to 10 reviews appealable at once.

The practical consequence for a trade business is that your defence against one bad review is thirty good ones, which is the review habit above, and not a removal service.

Scope

This page is about the home services vertical. It deliberately does not target local seo services, local seo pricing, best local seo, or the trade specific phrases local seo for plumbers, local seo for hvac contractors and local seo for electricians, all of which an existing page on this site already pools alongside what a package costs per location. That is the page to read if your question is what to buy and what it should cost.

What trade businesses ask

Do I need a website at all. Yes, but it is the second asset. Finish the profile first, and a four page site that loads fast beats a twenty page site that does not.

How many town pages. As many as you have genuinely different things to say, which for most firms is three to five, not twenty.

When local SEO can be judged. Read profile and review work in the Business Profile performance report, and service and town pages in Search Console impressions and positions; the outcome depends on competition, your offer and your budget. Anybody promising the map pack in thirty days is guessing.

If the piece you are missing is the link side, our page on the eight local link sources that hold up and the tactics to avoid. No other page on this site links to that one, measured on 21 October 2026 across 2,490 stored bodies (2,118 published drafts plus 372 fetched live pages) against 2,404 live pages, with my own wave excluded. 978 of those 2,404 pages, 40.7 percent, carry no inbound link from anywhere on the site, and that figure is an upper bound, because a body we cannot read cannot be counted as a linker.
