Best local SEO tools compared, and the one surface none of them watches
What a local tool measures that a national tool cannot, why a grid of coordinates is the whole product, and the question a local buyer now asks somewhere else entirely.

Local search is a different measurement problem from national search, and that is the only reason local tools exist as a category. Nationally, a position is roughly one number. Locally, it is a different number on every street, because proximity is a ranking factor in the map pack, so the honest unit of local measurement is a grid rather than a rank.
The criterion here: does the tool measure something that changes with the searcher's location, and does it publish what it measures? A tool that reports one local position for a whole city is reporting an average of a thing that varies by half a mile, and that average can be comfortably wrong.
The four jobs a local tool does
| Job | What the tool gives you | Why a national tool cannot do it |
|---|---|---|
| Grid rank tracking | Your map pack position at many points across an area, drawn as a grid | A national tracker queries from one place. Local position changes with the searcher's coordinates, so one query answers one street. |
| Citation and listing management | Where your name, address and phone number appear, and where they disagree with each other | It is a directory data problem rather than a search index problem. |
| Review monitoring and requests | New reviews across platforms, and a route to ask for more | Reviews are a local ranking and conversion input and they live outside your site entirely. |
| Business profile insights | Calls, direction requests, photo views and the queries that surfaced your profile | Google publishes this inside the profile itself, free, and it is measured rather than modelled. |
Start with the free half, because it is most of the value
Your Google Business Profile publishes its own performance data: how people found you, what they did next, and which searches surfaced your listing. That is measured data about your own business and it costs nothing. Search Console sits beside it for your website, and the two together answer most local questions a small business has.
What you cannot get free is the grid, because producing it means querying from many locations, which is the work a local tool is actually selling. That is a fair thing to pay for and it is the reason this category is not simply a cheaper version of a national suite.
What to check before buying a local tool
Four things. The grid resolution and how many points a report includes, because that is the product. Whether it handles multiple locations at the price you are quoted, since multi location is where local tools diverge sharply. Whether citation submissions are one off or ongoing, because a listing that drifts back is a recurring job. And whether review requests comply with the platform rules you are subject to, which is a compliance question before it is a marketing one.
The local question that moved somewhere no local tool is looking
A grid tells you where you appear when somebody searches from a given point. Increasingly, a local buyer does not search from a point at all: they ask an assistant for a recommendation and get a short answer naming two or three businesses, with no map, no grid and no position.
No local tool reads that, because there is nothing stored to read. AI Knows Us measures it directly: the buyer questions you nominate, asked across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, with the named businesses recorded each time. Our pricing page publishes the arithmetic, where one credit is one buyer question on one app once and a Claude check costs three because Claude costs more to run, and it publishes a free scan on your own domain. We sell no grid tracker, no citation manager and no review platform, so for the four jobs in the table the local tools are the answer and we are not a candidate for any of them. Ahrefs reads more assistant surfaces than we do, including AI Mode and Copilot, and publishes its own per engine cost of 8 checks per update for a Claude check.
For a local services business the practical lever on that answer is publishing the credential an assistant can verify, which is a different task from citation management and it is written up here: AI visibility for US local services, publishing the license number a state board can confirm. On 21 October 2026 we counted durable inbound links across 1,655 tracked pages on this site and 696 of them had none; that page was one, at 600 searches a month.
What local businesses ask about local SEO tools
Do I need a local SEO tool for one location?
Usually not at first. Your Business Profile insights plus Search Console cover the measurement, and the work is reviews, photos, categories and service pages. Buy a grid tracker when you need to prove to somebody that position varies across your service area.
What is a local rank grid?
Your map pack position sampled at many points across an area and drawn as a map. It exists because proximity affects the map pack, which means one position for a city is an average rather than a fact.
Are citation building tools worth it?
The high value directories are a short list and you can do them yourself in an afternoon. The tools earn their fee on consistency over time and on multiple locations, which is where doing it by hand stops scaling.
Can a local tool manage reviews for me?
It can monitor them and help you ask. Read the platform rules on incentives and bulk requests before you automate anything, because the compliance cost of getting that wrong is larger than the tool fee.
How do I find out whether assistants recommend my business locally?
Ask them, as a customer would, naming your town and your service but not your business. Note who appears. If a competitor appears every time and you never do, that is the finding, and it is available to you for free today.
