Best marketing brands ranked on what each one publishes that you can actually copy

Lists of admired brands are opinion. This one ranks them on whether the company hands you the document behind the marketing, and one brand is a long way clear.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 21 October 2026

The brands worth studying are not the ones with the most admired campaigns. They are the ones that publish the internal document the campaign came out of, because that is the only part of somebody else's marketing you can take and use. Ranked on that single criterion, read on 21 October 2026, Mailchimp is first by a distance: its content style guide is public, complete and explicitly written to be useful to people who do not work there.

Here is the criterion in full, applied to every brand below including the ones it treats harshly. Rank on whether the company publishes, on its own domain and without a sign in, a document that tells an outsider how its marketing decisions get made. Not a case study about a result. The thing the team works from. It is checkable by anybody in an afternoon, which is the point of choosing it.

The ranking, and what each brand actually hands over

BrandWhat it publishesCan you work from it
MailchimpA content style guide at styleguide.mailchimp.com with seventeen named sections, including voice and tone, writing about people, grammar and mechanics, writing for accessibility, writing for translation, writing legal content and a word list.Yes, directly. It says it was created for Mailchimp employees and that the company hopes it is useful to other content and communications teams.
AtlassianA public design system at atlassian.design, plus a news stream about how the system is built, covering its motion system, an in house AI prototyping tool, and giving AI agents design system context from a command line.Yes for product and interface decisions, less so for campaign writing. It is a design system with a working diary attached.
PatagoniaActivism as a published structure rather than a sentiment. Named campaigns sit in the main site navigation beside the product categories, and Patagonia Action Works lets a visitor find an organisation, sign a petition, attend an event or volunteer a skill.Yes as an architecture. You can see exactly how a position is turned into something a customer can do, which is the hard part.
Red BullScale rather than method, through Red Bull Media House: over 700 athletes, a stated global reach above one billion, more than 1,250 events a year, more than twenty owned media platforms and presence in over 170 countries. Not as a method. These are self reported figures about an operation almost nobody can reproduce, and they are useful as proof that owned media can be run as a business.
DuolingoDesign and product articles. The design address redirects into a Design section of its own blog, which carries writing about how the work gets made rather than a guide to making it.Partly. Good reading, no document to work from at that address on the date we read it.
ShopifyPolaris, which on 21 October 2026 redirected from polaris.shopify.com into the developer documentation at shopify.dev. It is now presented as an API surface. For engineers, yes. As a marketing reference it has moved out of reach of the audience it used to serve.

Why Mailchimp wins this and what it costs the brand nothing to do

Two sections of that guide are the ones to read first, and neither is about voice. Writing about people sets rules for how the company describes human beings, which is where most brand copy quietly goes wrong. Writing for translation sets rules that make English copy survive being translated, which is the thing almost every growing company discovers eighteen months too late. Both are decisions that would otherwise be argued about in a meeting every time they came up.

The guide is also the clearest demonstration of a cheap marketing asset that keeps paying. It is text, it needs no design budget, it is quoted and linked by people who have never been customers, and it is still the first result a lot of people meet when they look for how to write like a company they like. Publishing the document is the marketing.

What a list like this cannot tell you, and the honest limit on all of it

A published style guide does not prove the marketing is effective. It proves the marketing is legible, which is a different and more useful thing for somebody trying to learn. Nobody outside these companies can see what any campaign returned, because the numbers are not published and the ones that are published are chosen. So a ranking built on results would be a ranking built on press coverage, and that is the thing this page exists to avoid.

The self reported figure problem deserves naming as well. Red Bull's numbers above are its own, they are not audited, and a figure like global reach above one billion is a definition before it is a measurement. Quote it as something the company publishes, with the date you read it, which is how we have used it here.

How to actually use another brand's published work

Take the structure and leave the voice. A style guide's value is in the decisions it makes explicit, not in the tone it lands on, and a company that copies Mailchimp's warmth without earning it reads as a company doing an impression.

Start with the word list. Every company already has twenty words its own staff spell and capitalise differently, and writing them down is an hour of work that removes a recurring argument.

Then write the rules you keep breaking, not the rules you keep. A guide that says be clear and be human is furniture. A guide that says we never write customers as users, and here is why, is a guide.

If the question underneath this one is which brands have the best brand strategy rather than the best published craft, the worked version of that is a different exercise, and our page on four brand strategy examples and the refusal that makes each one a strategy takes four of them apart properly.

Questions people ask about the brands with the best marketing

Why are the obvious names not at the top of this list?

Because the criterion is what they publish, not what they achieve. Several of the most admired marketing companies in the world publish nothing an outsider can work from, and on this measure that puts them below a payments company with a good style guide. A different criterion would produce a different order, which is why the criterion is stated at the top rather than implied.

Is a brand guideline the same as a style guide?

No, and the gap matters when you go looking. Brand guidelines govern the logo, colour, type and spacing. A content style guide governs the words. Most companies publish the first and keep the second, which is why Mailchimp's stands out.

What should a small company publish?

One page. The word list, the three things you never say, and who signs off. It will be read more than a thirty page document, and it can be finished this week.

Do these guides go out of date?

They do, and a dated guide still beats no guide. Put a last reviewed date on yours and revisit it when the product changes name or you enter a second market.

Publishing the document has a second payoff nobody planned for

There is a reason the style guide keeps coming up when people discuss this brand and the campaign budget does not. Published text gets read, quoted and repeated, including by the systems that now assemble answers for buyers. A company whose principles exist only in a slide deck has given nothing to quote from. One whose guide has been public for years is quotable by anybody describing it, which is a durable advantage that cost a writer a fortnight.

That is also, bluntly, the thing our own company does for a living, so here it is with the numbers attached. AI Knows Us reads what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews say when a buyer asks who to buy from. The unit is a credit, and our pricing page defines it plainly: one credit is one buyer question, on one app, once, and a Claude check costs three because Claude costs more to run. We publish the export a claim is built from, so you can produce the same file our proof page is built from on your own domain and check us the way this page checked everybody else. We link it on purpose: measured across 2,589 stored page bodies on 21 October 2026, no other page on this site links to it, and 1,005 of our 2,501 live pages were in the same position, 40.2 per cent and an upper bound. And where a rival publishes something we do not, tryprofound.com's pricing page read on 21 October 2026 carries SOC 2 compliance with SSO and SAML, while our own pricing text renders none of the three.
