Best paid SEO tools compared, and the free tool that beats each one

Four paid categories are worth the money and three are not, judged on one test: is there a free tool that answers the same question? Where there is, the free one wins and the page says so.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

The useful question about paid SEO tools is not which is best. It is which paid categories survive the only test that matters: is there a free tool that answers the same question? Where there is, paying is a convenience, and convenience is worth buying honestly rather than being sold as capability.

This is not a cheapest stack page, which is a different question and linked at the end. It is about which paid things to buy when you do have a budget.

The verdict on each paid category

Paid categoryFree alternativeVerdict
Third party link and keyword indexNone at depth. Search Console shows your own links onlyBuy it. This is the only genuine asymmetry in the market: somebody else crawled the web. Moz publishes over 40 trillion links in Link Explorer and Majestic publishes 5,000 rows per search on Lite, read 21 October 2026.
Scheduled and large scale crawlingA free desktop crawl, up to Screaming Frog's published 500 URL limitBuy it above the ceiling. Below it the free crawl is the same crawler. Scheduling, saved crawls, JavaScript rendering and crawl comparison are what the licence adds.
Local grid trackingNothing free reports position by location across an areaBuy it if you are local. BrightLocal publishes a geo grid for up to five keywords and local ranking for up to 100 keywords against four competitors on its Track tier, read 21 October 2026.
Marketplace research, for Amazon sellersAmazon's own seller reportsBuy it at scale. Jungle Scout publishes its lower tier as tracking up to 200 ASINs against 20,000 on its brand product, read 21 October 2026.
Rank trackingSearch Console average position, freeBorderline. Buy it when somebody else needs the chart or you need daily readings. Search Console answers the same question later and more honestly.
Content optimisersReading the three pages that outrank youConvenience. Real time saved per article, no new information. Fine to buy if you publish weekly.
Site graders and SEO scoresSearch Console, PageSpeed Insights, the Rich Results TestDo not buy. The underlying checks are free and public and the score is the vendor's own weighting.

The purchase order, if the budget is one subscription

Buy a month of a link and keyword index, use it hard, write the plan. If you crawl more than five hundred URLs, buy the crawler licence, because it is a one off per user cost that pays back immediately. If you are a local business, buy grid tracking instead of either, because position by location is the only question in your market that no free tool answers. Those three cover almost every honest case.

The two things to check before any annual commitment

What is published as the limit, and what you keep if you stop. Prices move with the country the request comes from, limits do not: on 21 October 2026 one vendor's pricing page served Indian rupee prices to a United States question from this machine purely because of where the request originated. And tracked history is the one asset in this market that cannot be recreated later, so export rows quarterly whatever you buy.

Also check the product has not been renamed under you. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools now says on its own page that it is Ahrefs Free. Amazon publishes that Amazon DSP has evolved into Amazon Ads Agent, confirmed on advertising.amazon.com on 21 October 2026. A comparison built on last quarter's product name is already wrong.

The one check none of these tools runs, and who sells it

Every tool on this page measures a search engine. None of them measures the other place your buyer now asks, which is an assistant: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose an answer for each asker, naming some businesses and not others, and there is no index a crawler can read to find out whose name came up. It is a paid category with no free equivalent at all beyond asking the questions by hand, which is genuinely free and genuinely works for one question asked once.

AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else. We are not an SEO tool and we are not in the ranking above, because a buyer who came here for a crawler or a keyword index should buy one of the tools named above instead. What we do is ask your buyer question in all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. Our own figures, from the rendered text of our llms.txt read on 21 October 2026: one credit is one buyer question on one app once, most checks cost one credit and a Claude check costs three because Claude costs more to run. The published US floor is $149 a month for SEO Start, and that same file says SEO Start watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand harvest rather than an engine watch. The first tier that watches the five engines is Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. A managed option is published in rupees only, Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month at a three month minimum, so we are not going to convert it for you.

Where the tools on this page beat us, plainly. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on 21 October 2026, tracks prompts on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. AI Mode and Copilot are two surfaces we do not read at all, and its page publishes an overage price of $0.020 per check and the cost of a Claude update at 8 checks, which is a level of unit disclosure worth holding every vendor to, us included. Semrush, whose SEO and AI search pricing page we read the same day, sells AI visibility inside the suite you may already be paying for, with 50 prompts tracked daily and 300 AI visibility reports a day on its Starter tier. Moz now publishes AI Explorer, described on moz.com as showing what the top AI agents say about your brand. If you already pay one of those three, their module is the cheaper route and you should take it. We are the single purpose option for somebody who does not want a suite.

The honest summary

No competitor price table is reproduced on this page. What is quoted instead is the published limit that sets a tier, because a limit is the vendor's own statement of what you get and it does not move with the country you are reading from. That matters more than it sounds: on 21 October 2026 a fetch of one vendor's US pricing page from this machine returned Indian rupee prices, because the request left from an Indian address. A 200 response can still be the wrong page.

Of the seven paid categories above, one is essential, three are conditional, two are conveniences and one should not be bought. That is a smaller shopping list than the market implies, and the saving is better spent on the pages.

If the budget is actually zero rather than small: the cheapest SEO tools that still answer a real question. On 21 October 2026 we read every link we could see on this site, 2,169 page bodies in all, against 2,082 live pages, and 935 of them, 44.9 percent, had no inbound link from any of those bodies. That figure is an upper bound rather than a count. No other page on this site links to the one above.

Questions about paid SEO tools

Which paid SEO tool should I buy first?

A month of a third party link and keyword index. It is the only question nothing free answers.

Are paid tools more accurate than free ones?

For observed facts, no. For modelled figures, more money buys a bigger sample rather than a correct answer, and the vendors say so.

Is an annual plan worth the discount?

Only after a month that changed a decision. A yearly plan for a tool you open twice is not a discount.

Can I share one paid account across a team?

Read the licence. Several vendors publish per user terms, and Screaming Frog states on its own page that two users need two licences.

What about group buy or shared accounts?

They usually sit against the vendor's own terms, which is a contractual exposure rather than a bargain, and the access can stop at a moment that is not yours to choose. One concentrated paid month is the honest version of the same saving.
