Best SEO analytics tools compared, and which number each one is entitled to report
Four kinds of product are sold as SEO analytics and they are not interchangeable, because each one can only honestly report the number its own data source contains. Here is which question each one is allowed to answer.

SEO analytics is a label stuck on four different products, and the arguments people have about which one is right are usually arguments about which question they were asking. A tool can only report what its data source contains. Once you know the source, the honest scope of each tool is obvious and the overlap mostly disappears.
The criterion here: where does the number come from, and is the tool entitled to report it? Applied to everything including our own product, it is the cleanest test in this subject.
The four sources, and what each one is entitled to say
| Product | Source of the number | Entitled to answer | Not entitled to answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search Console | Google's own log of your pages appearing in results | Which queries you appeared for, how often, and roughly where. Its help page, read 21 October 2026, documents search types of web as text based or multimodal, image, video and news. | What happened after the click, and anything at all about a competitor. |
| Google Analytics 4 | A tag on your own pages | What people did after arriving, by landing page and channel, measured in key events. | Which query brought them. Keyword data has not been in Analytics for years, and the Search Console link is what brings query data into the same interface. |
| A third party suite: Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz | The vendor's own crawl and clickstream model | Comparative statements about other sites. Semrush publishes 5 websites to monitor and 500 keywords tracked daily on its entry SEO tier, read 21 October 2026. Ahrefs publishes a free tier, now named Ahrefs Free on its own page, giving three tools on sites you verify. | Your exact traffic, and any competitor figure stated to three significant digits. |
| Server logs | Your own web server | Which bots came, how often, and what they fetched. Ahrefs has added Bot Analytics for this, described on its site as showing good and bad bots crawling your website. | Anything about humans who did not reach your server. |
The specific question about Google Analytics, because it is the one people search for
There is no such thing as a Google Analytics SEO tool in the sense people mean. Analytics is one of the four sources above and it answers the after the click half. The work that makes it useful for search is configuration rather than a purchase: mark your real conversions as key events, link the property to Search Console so query data arrives in the same interface, and filter internal traffic. After that, read the Organic Search channel broken down by landing page and measured in key events rather than sessions. That is the whole method and no third party product improves on it.
Third party tools that advertise Analytics integration are usually joining your Analytics rows to their own index so you can see your behaviour data beside their competitive estimates. That is genuinely useful and it does not change which source owns which number.
The number people quote that nobody is entitled to
A competitor's monthly organic traffic, stated as a figure. Every vendor that reports it says in its own documentation that it is modelled from ranking positions and panel data. It is fine as a comparison, so "they appear to get several times what we do" is honest. A three digit number in a slide is not.
The one check none of these tools runs, and who sells it
Every tool on this page measures a search engine. None of them measures the other place your buyer now asks, which is an assistant: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose an answer for each asker, naming some businesses and not others, and there is no index a crawler can read to find out whose name came up. None of the four sources above contains it. A tag cannot see it, a server log cannot see it, and a crawler cannot see it, because the answer was composed for the asker and stored nowhere.
AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else. We are not an SEO tool and we are not in the ranking above, because a buyer who came here for a crawler or a keyword index should buy one of the tools named above instead. What we do is ask your buyer question in all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. Our own figures, from the rendered text of our llms.txt read on 21 October 2026: one credit is one buyer question on one app once, most checks cost one credit and a Claude check costs three because Claude costs more to run. The published US floor is $149 a month for SEO Start, and that same file says SEO Start watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand harvest rather than an engine watch. The first tier that watches the five engines is Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. A managed option is published in rupees only, Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month at a three month minimum, so we are not going to convert it for you.
Where the tools on this page beat us, plainly. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on 21 October 2026, tracks prompts on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. AI Mode and Copilot are two surfaces we do not read at all, and its page publishes an overage price of $0.020 per check and the cost of a Claude update at 8 checks, which is a level of unit disclosure worth holding every vendor to, us included. Semrush, whose SEO and AI search pricing page we read the same day, sells AI visibility inside the suite you may already be paying for, with 50 prompts tracked daily and 300 AI visibility reports a day on its Starter tier. Moz now publishes AI Explorer, described on moz.com as showing what the top AI agents say about your brand. If you already pay one of those three, their module is the cheaper route and you should take it. We are the single purpose option for somebody who does not want a suite.
The reporting stack that holds up
No competitor price table is reproduced on this page. What is quoted instead is the published limit that sets a tier, because a limit is the vendor's own statement of what you get and it does not move with the country you are reading from. That matters more than it sounds: on 21 October 2026 a fetch of one vendor's US pricing page from this machine returned Indian rupee prices, because the request left from an Indian address. A 200 response can still be the wrong page.
In order: Search Console for before the click, GA4 with key events for after it, one third party index for anything about anybody else, and your logs when a bot question arises. Four sources, four scopes, no argument about whose number is right. Add a schedule and a person who reads it, which is the part no tool supplies.
If the review sites are your next stop, they are worth reading with a method: SEO software reviews compared, and which review sources a buyer can check. On 21 October 2026 we read every link we could see on this site, 2,169 page bodies in all, against 2,082 live pages, and 935 of them, 44.9 percent, had no inbound link from any of those bodies. That figure is an upper bound rather than a count. No other page on this site links to the one above.
Questions about SEO analytics tools
Is Google Analytics an SEO tool?
It is half of one. It answers what happened after the click and nothing about what happened before it. Link it to Search Console and the pair is complete.
Why do Search Console clicks never match Analytics sessions?
Because they count different events in different places, with different filtering and different time handling. A persistent gap of some tens of percent is normal and not a fault to chase.
Do I need a paid analytics platform for SEO?
Only for competitive questions. Everything about your own site is available free and first party.
Which SEO analytics metric should a small business watch?
Key events from the Organic Search channel, by landing page, monthly. One number, one breakdown, one cadence.
Can any analytics tool show traffic from AI assistants?
It can show referrals when an assistant links out and somebody clicks, which is a small fraction of the answers you appear in. It cannot show the answers where you were named and nobody clicked, because no request ever reached your server.
