Best SEO audit and reporting tools compared, and which free tiers let you send the report to a client

An audit tool and a reporting tool are two different products sold under one phrase. One finds problems, the other explains them to somebody who is not technical. Here is the line between them and what each vendor publishes about free use and rebranding.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

The criterion on this page, applied to everybody including us. A report is something somebody else reads, so rank on two things the vendor publishes: what the free tier allows you to produce, and whether the output can carry your name instead of the vendor's. Both are checkable on the vendor's own page before you pay. Report quality is not checkable in advance and should not be ranked as if it were.

The two products behind one phrase

An audit toolA reporting tool
What it producesA list of problems found by crawling or testing your site.A recurring document that pulls numbers from Search Console, Analytics and a rank tracker into one place.
Who reads itWhoever will fix the problems.Whoever signs the invoice.
How oftenOn a change, and otherwise occasionally.Monthly, which is why the branding and the scheduling matter more than the depth.
The failure modeThree hundred findings and no priority order.A number nobody can source when the client asks where it came from.

Google Search ConsoleFree for any property you can verify. It reports which of your pages Google indexed, why it declined others, and the queries each page appeared for, with sixteen months of history.None, and it does not need any. Export the data and put it in your own document. This is the only observed first-party source in the list.
SE Rankingseranking.com/pricing.html says "Start free 14-day trial" and "No credit card required", and the FAQ states the trial "is fully functional and includes starter usage" with caps of 10 projects, 750 tracked keywords per day, 20 AI prompts per day and AI competitive research for 3 domains.Published, and the tier is published with it: white label sits behind an "Agency Pack" add-on at +$69.00/mo, annual billing only, listing "White label for platform and reporting" and 30 client seats. Growth includes "Guest links for easy collaboration".
Semrushsemrush.com/pricing/ says "Try Semrush free for seven days. Cancel anytime", and publishes a free plan described as "For trying out the platform. No credit card required" with "1 demo project" and "10 reports per day across all vital tools".Not addressed on the pricing page. That is an absence of disclosure where a buyer looks, not an absence of the feature.
AgencyAnalyticsNo free tier or trial figure read on the page we fetched.Published: agencyanalytics.com/features/white-label-reporting says "Add your logo, colors, and custom domain" and "Give clients branded access to results". It does not mention the email sender identity, does not mention removing vendor branding from inside the product, and states no plan tier for any of it.
Ahrefsahrefs.com/pricing publishes no free trial and no refund wording at all. It publishes a plan called "Ahrefs Free", described as "Get Ahrefs data on your site and fix what matters". Its Report Builder add-on publishes "50 reports" and "500 total widgets".Not addressed on the pricing page.
SEOptimerCould not be read. seoptimer.com returned HTTP 403 to this machine on 21 October 2026.Unverified. SEOptimer is sold largely on a rebranded audit PDF and an embeddable audit form, and we are not quoting either from memory. A 403 is never evidence of absence.
MozCould not be read. moz.com would not serve this machine at all on 21 October 2026.Unverified, therefore unquoted.

So the ranking, on the stated criterion

Search Console first, and it is free. On a page about reporting that will read as a dodge, so here is the defence: every paid tool in the list pulls its headline numbers from Search Console, and the client-facing question "where did this figure come from" has one good answer and it is this one. Build the monthly document around its exports and add the paid tools for what it cannot do.

SE Ranking second. It is the only vendor here that publishes the trial length, the card requirement, the exact trial caps, the rebrand, the rebrand's tier and the rebrand's billing condition. That is the whole criterion answered in numbers on one page, and no other vendor in this set manages it.

AgencyAnalytics third, because it publishes three of the four rebranding items plainly but names no tier, so you cannot price the thing you are buying.

Semrush and Ahrefs are not ranked on this criterion. Both publish excellent allowance disclosure and neither addresses client-facing branding where a buyer reads, and Ahrefs is the only vendor here that publishes no trial of any kind while publishing a genuinely free tier instead, which is a plainer offer than a countdown. Two vendors are unranked because they would not serve us.

Four things a client-facing report should always contain

The source of every number, named, so the figure can be re-derived. A vendor score with no input is the fastest way to lose a monthly reporting relationship.

What changed and what was done, in two short lists, before any chart.

One number that went the wrong way, with the reason. A report in which everything improves every month stops being read.

A date on every external figure, including vendor claims. Products get renamed under you: advertising.amazon.com now publishes that "Amazon DSP has evolved into Amazon Ads Agent", so a comparison built on the old name went stale without anybody editing it.

The section the report does not have yet

Every tool above reports search positions, traffic, links and site health. None of them reports whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google's AI Overviews named the business when a buyer asked who to use. That exchange happens off your site and leaves nothing to crawl, so no audit tool finds it and no reporting tool pulls it.

AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else, and we are not in the ranking above, because somebody who needs a monthly client report should buy SE Ranking or build it on Search Console exports. We are not SEO audit or reporting software, and the honest framing is that we are a row the report does not have yet. From the rendered text of our pricing page, read 21 October 2026: "One credit is one buyer question, asked on one AI app, once", "Most checks use one credit", "A Claude check uses 3, because Claude costs us more to run". From our llms.txt the same day: SEO Start at $149 a month watches 0 buyer questions, 0 credits and 0 engines, so do not read it as an engine watch; Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers reads all five surfaces; Agency at $1,299 publishes 80 buyer questions, 12,300 credits and ten businesses covered.

Where a rival beats us on this page's own criterion, plainly. SE Ranking publishes a rebrand, a client seat count and a 14-day no-card trial. Our pricing page says nothing about white label and we publish no free tier and no trial. On the agency reporting question SE Ranking is ahead of us, and a page that ranked us first here would be wrong.

For the audit half asked as a free-tool question, where each free analyser stops is the whole decision: free SEO analysis tools compared, and where each free analyser stops. On 21 October 2026 we read 2,411 page bodies on this site against 2,325 live pages and 971 of them, 41.8 percent, carried no inbound link from any body we could read, which is an upper bound rather than a count. We measured that target specifically: no other page on this site links to that one.

Questions about SEO audit and reporting tools

Can one tool do the audit and the monthly report?

Several claim to and the combination usually means the monthly report is a crawl summary. The client wants to know what changed in the business, which is a different document.

Is a free audit tool good enough to send a client?

The findings often are. The presentation usually is not, and a free tool that brands the PDF with its own logo is advertising to your client. Check the branding terms, which is why this page ranks on them.

How often should a technical audit be repeated?

After any platform or template change, and otherwise about yearly. Between audits a scheduled crawl and a weekly coverage check catch most of what a fresh audit would find.

Should the report include rankings?

Include them and never lead with them. A position is one reading from one place, and the client's actual question is about enquiries.
