Best SEO competitive analysis tools compared, and which numbers are estimates
What you can genuinely learn about a rival, which figures are modelled, and the four comparisons worth running before a subscription renews.

Competitive analysis is the one part of SEO you cannot do with free tools, and the reason is structural rather than commercial. Google shows you your own property. Everything you want to know about a rival has to come from somebody's independent crawl of the web, and building one of those is the whole business of two or three companies.
So the useful criterion here is not which tool has more features but which of its numbers are observed and which are modelled. Observed numbers about a rival are facts you can act on. Modelled numbers are estimates with a method behind them, and they are useful as long as nobody puts them in a board pack as measurements.
What is observed and what is modelled
| What you want to know | Status | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Which sites link to a rival | Observed, by the vendor's own crawler | The strongest data in the category. Read the pages that link, not the count. |
| Which pages a rival has | Observed, because they are public | The cheapest competitive insight there is, and you can get a lot of it with a crawler of your own pointed at their public site. |
| Which keywords a rival ranks for | Partly observed: the vendor saw their page in a result it sampled | Directional and genuinely useful for finding whole topics you have missed. |
| A rival's traffic | Modelled, from ranking positions and clickstream data | Comparative only. The right sentence is that they appear to get several times what we do, never a number with three digits in it. |
| A rival's revenue or spend | Modelled, if offered at all | Treat as a conversation starter. The error bars are wide and the vendors say so in their documentation. |
The four comparisons worth running
First, page coverage. List their pages and yours for the same subject. The gap is usually obvious and it is usually a page type rather than a single page: they have a page per service and per town and you have one page for all of it.
Second, the links to one page. Not their whole domain, one page: the one outranking yours. Who links to it, and why would anybody link to yours instead? That question produces a plan rather than a report.
Third, the pages themselves. Open the three above you and read them properly. Write down three things they cover that you do not and one thing you do better. Nobody needs software for this and it beats most software.
Fourth, share of the queries you both care about. Not their total traffic, which is modelled, but how many of your twenty priority phrases each of you appears for, which you can count.
Where to be careful reading a vendor's own comparison
Vendor comparison matrices in this market are worth reading as advocacy rather than evidence, and there is a specific technical trap. Two AI visibility vendors render every numeric cell of their comparison tables as zero on a first request, with the real limits only on the plan cards, so an automated read of either matrix reports a product with no limits at all. If you are gathering competitive facts programmatically, read the plan card and not the matrix. Likewise a site that returns 403 to your browser has told you nothing about itself: on 21 October 2026 four well known review directories returned 403 to a desktop browser request from this machine, which is a statement about the request and not about the companies reviewed there.
The competitive comparison that is now missing from every one of these tools
Your competitor set in an assistant's answer is not your competitor set in a search result. When somebody asks who to buy from, the reply names two or three businesses and the selection is not a ranked list you can inspect. Plenty of businesses are discovering that a rival they never competed with in search is named every time, and no competitive analysis tool above reports it because there is no index of those answers to query.
AI Knows Us measures exactly that: the buyer questions you nominate, asked across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, with every business named in the answer recorded, so the rival list comes out of the answers rather than out of an assumption. Our pricing page publishes the arithmetic, one credit per buyer question per app per ask and three for a Claude check, and names competitors and markets as plan dimensions. We do not sell a link index, a keyword index or a traffic estimator, so for everything in the table above the suites are the answer. Ahrefs publishes the larger reading of the assistant surface, covering AI Mode and Copilot which we do not read, and publishes its cost of 8 checks per update for a Claude check on its Brand Radar page.
Competitive work usually ends in a decision about where to spend, and the clearest way to compare two subjects commercially is to look at what advertisers pay for them: high paying keywords, what makes one expensive and how to find them. Of 1,655 tracked pages on this site, 696 had no durable inbound link when we measured on 21 October 2026, and that page was one of them.
What people ask about competitor analysis in SEO
How accurate are competitor traffic estimates?
Accurate enough for comparison, not for a forecast. Use them to say one site is much larger than another, and never to report a competitor's visits as though it were measured.
Can I see a competitor's Search Console data?
No. It is their property's data and it is not available to anybody else, which is precisely why a third party index exists and why that index is the part of the subscription you cannot substitute.
How many rivals is it worth watching closely?
Three, properly, rather than fifteen superficially. Pick the one above you, the one closest to your size, and the one that keeps appearing where you expected to, and read their work rather than their numbers.
Is it worth crawling a competitor's site?
Their public pages, yes, politely and slowly. It is the fastest way to see their page architecture and their internal link structure, both of which are visible to anybody and both of which explain more than a traffic estimate.
How do I find out who an assistant recommends instead of me?
Ask it the buyer's question with your own name left out, and write down every business in the reply. Repeat it in each app, because the answers differ, and the set of names you collect is your real competitor list on that surface.
