Best SEO research tools compared, and the research question each one answers
Research is four separate questions: what to write, who is winning, what they did, and whether the query is worth it at all. Each has a best tool and one of them is answered by reading rather than buying.

SEO research sounds like one activity and is four, and people buy a tool for the question they find easiest rather than the one they need answered. Here are the four, in the order they actually arise, with the tool that answers each and the published limit that decides whether your tier can.
The criterion: which research question does this tool hold the data for? A tool outside its question produces a confident answer to something you did not ask.
The four questions
| Question | Where the answer lives | Published limit, read 21 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| What are people searching for in my market, and how much? | Keyword Planner, plus the search box for phrasing | Free with an Ads account, one grouped figure per normalised set, for the geography you select. Never add the phrasings inside a group. |
| What am I already close to winning? | Search Console | Free for any verified property. The most under used research tool in existence, because it reports queries you already appear for. |
| Who is winning, and on what? | A third party index | Moz publishes free Competitive Research, Domain Analysis and a keyword index above 1.25 billion. Semrush publishes 5 websites to monitor and 500 keywords tracked daily on its entry SEO tier. Majestic publishes 5,000 rows per search on Lite. |
| Is this query worth going after at all? | The result page itself, read by a person | No tool and no limit. Open the query, see who holds it, and decide whether you could honestly produce something better. A difficulty score is a model of this question, not an answer to it. |
The difficulty score, and what it actually is
Every suite publishes a keyword difficulty number and each one is built differently, mostly from the link profiles of the pages currently ranking. It is a useful sort order for a long list and it is not a verdict. Two things it systematically misses: whether the result page is dominated by formats you cannot produce, and whether the intent behind the query matches what you sell. Both are visible in ten seconds by opening the query, which is why the fourth row above has no tool in it.
The research sequence that avoids the common waste
Start inside Search Console, because the queries you already appear for are real, measured and about you, and the cheapest wins in this whole subject are pages at the bottom of the first page. Size the ideas you do not yet have in Keyword Planner. Then use one index to answer the competitive question for your three real rivals, on the specific pages that beat you rather than on their whole domains. Then open the result pages and read them. The reading is the part that produces the plan, and it is the part people skip because it does not look like work.
Note one trap in sizing: a figure measured across several countries at once is a sum, not a market. We hit this in our own planning and had to re-measure every row against a single country before any of it could be used. If a figure arrived from a multi market query, it overstates every single market inside it.
The one check none of these tools runs, and who sells it
Every tool on this page measures a search engine. None of them measures the other place your buyer now asks, which is an assistant: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose an answer for each asker, naming some businesses and not others, and there is no index a crawler can read to find out whose name came up. It is a research question too, and the honest method is the same as the fourth row above: ask it and read the answer, repeatedly, which is precisely what we sell as a service rather than as a dataset.
AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else. We are not an SEO tool and we are not in the ranking above, because a buyer who came here for a crawler or a keyword index should buy one of the tools named above instead. What we do is ask your buyer question in all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. Our own figures, from the rendered text of our llms.txt read on 21 October 2026: one credit is one buyer question on one app once, most checks cost one credit and a Claude check costs three because Claude costs more to run. The published US floor is $149 a month for SEO Start, and that same file says SEO Start watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand harvest rather than an engine watch. The first tier that watches the five engines is Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. A managed option is published in rupees only, Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month at a three month minimum, so we are not going to convert it for you.
Where the tools on this page beat us, plainly. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on 21 October 2026, tracks prompts on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. AI Mode and Copilot are two surfaces we do not read at all, and its page publishes an overage price of $0.020 per check and the cost of a Claude update at 8 checks, which is a level of unit disclosure worth holding every vendor to, us included. Semrush, whose SEO and AI search pricing page we read the same day, sells AI visibility inside the suite you may already be paying for, with 50 prompts tracked daily and 300 AI visibility reports a day on its Starter tier. Moz now publishes AI Explorer, described on moz.com as showing what the top AI agents say about your brand. If you already pay one of those three, their module is the cheaper route and you should take it. We are the single purpose option for somebody who does not want a suite.
What to export before you cancel
No competitor price table is reproduced on this page. What is quoted instead is the published limit that sets a tier, because a limit is the vendor's own statement of what you get and it does not move with the country you are reading from. That matters more than it sounds: on 21 October 2026 a fetch of one vendor's US pricing page from this machine returned Indian rupee prices, because the request left from an Indian address. A 200 response can still be the wrong page.
The rows, not the reports. Referring domains for the pages you studied, the keyword lists with their grouped volumes, and the dates you read them. Research you cannot re-open in six months is research you will pay for again.
On the competitive half specifically, including what the data really is and the workflow that turns it into a plan: competitor keyword tools, what the data really is and the workflow that uses it. On 21 October 2026 we read every link we could see on this site, 2,169 page bodies in all, against 2,082 live pages, and 935 of them, 44.9 percent, had no inbound link from any of those bodies. That figure is an upper bound rather than a count. No other page on this site links to the one above.
Questions about SEO research tools
What is the best SEO research tool for a beginner?
Search Console, then Keyword Planner. Both free, and between them they answer the two questions that come first.
Is keyword difficulty reliable?
As a sort order, yes. As a verdict, no. It cannot see intent or the format of the result page, and both decide whether you can win.
How do I research competitors without paying?
Read their pages and crawl their public site. That answers coverage and structure. Only their links and their keyword footprint need a paid index.
Why do volume figures differ between tools?
Different sources and different grouping. Also check the geography: a multi country figure is a sum and overstates each market in it.
How long should research take?
A concentrated week for a new site, and an hour a month afterwards. Research that never ends is usually avoidance of publishing.
