Best SEO testing tools compared: what a test on a live site can actually show
Four different things get called SEO testing. Here is which tool belongs to each, how to run a template test honestly, and the sample size question nobody asks first.

SEO testing means four different things and the tools for each are completely different, so the first job is deciding which one you are asking for. One: validate a page against a specification, which is what a tester tool does. Two: test whether a crawler can see your content, which is a rendering question. Three: run a controlled experiment on a group of pages and measure what happened, which is split testing. Four: test a change on staging before it ships.
The criterion on this page is what each tool can prove: does it return a fact about your page, or an estimate about an outcome? Facts are cheap and usually free. Estimates about outcomes need a design, a sample and patience, and that is where most SEO testing goes wrong before a tool is even opened.
The four kinds, and the tool that belongs to each
| Kind of test | Use | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Specification test on one page | Rich Results Test, the Schema Markup Validator, any free page checker | Whether your markup is valid and your tags are present. A fact, returned in seconds, and free. |
| Rendering test | Search Console URL Inspection, a crawler with JavaScript rendering switched on | Whether the content and links exist for a crawler or only after scripts run. URL Inspection returns the rendered HTML Google holds, which settles it. |
| Split test across a group of pages | A dedicated SEO testing platform, or a careful spreadsheet and Search Console | Whether a template change moved clicks for the group that got it, against a group that did not. The only kind that speaks about outcomes. |
| Pre release test on staging | A desktop crawler pointed at the staging host, with authentication | Whether the release breaks indexing before customers see it. The cheapest test in this table by a wide margin. |
How to run a template test that means something
Split testing in search is a group test, not a visitor test. You cannot show two versions of a page to two halves of Google, so the design is: take a set of similar pages, change the thing on half of them, leave the other half alone, and compare clicks and impressions for both groups in Search Console over the same weeks.
Four rules make the result readable. Use pages that already behave alike, because a group containing one outlier page tells you about the outlier. Change one thing. Wait long enough that a week of seasonality cannot explain the difference. And write down what you expected before you start, because a hypothesis invented after the data is just a description of the data.
The sample size question is the one to ask first and almost nobody does: if you only have twelve similar pages, a split test is not the right instrument and reading the three pages ranking above you is. Testing needs volume to be worth the wait.
The free tests worth running today
Validate your structured data on a live URL. Run URL Inspection on your five most important pages and read the rendered HTML. Open your robots.txt and sitemap in a browser and confirm nothing important is blocked and nothing noindexed is listed. Crawl the site and sort by status code. None of that costs anything and together it eliminates most of what a paid testing tool would otherwise spend a month proving.
The test that none of these tools can run
Every tool above tests your page, your markup or your clicks. None of them can test whether an assistant names your business when a buyer asks who to buy from, because there is no stored page to validate and no list to measure a position in. The answer is composed for each asker and differs between apps.
That test is runnable by hand and it is worth running once before anybody buys software for it: ask the question your best customer would ask, in each app, leaving your own name out of the question so you do not lead the answer, and note which businesses appear. AI Knows Us is the version of that test that repeats and keeps a record: the buyer questions you nominate, asked across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, with the named businesses recorded each time. Our pricing page publishes the costing, which is one credit per buyer question per app per ask, three credits for Claude because Claude costs more to run. We sell none of the four testing products above. Ahrefs publishes a wider reading of this surface than ours, including AI Mode and Copilot which we do not read at all, at a published cost of 8 checks per update for a Claude check.
The hardest part of any search test is that the query data you want to measure it with is partly withheld, and knowing where it went changes the test design: not provided in analytics, where your keyword data went and how to get it back. Measured on 21 October 2026, 696 of the 1,655 tracked pages on this site carried no durable inbound link at all, and that page was one of them.
What people ask about testing SEO changes
Can I A/B test SEO like a landing page?
Not per visitor, because you cannot serve two versions to one crawler without creating a different problem. You test across groups of similar pages instead, and the unit of the experiment is the template rather than the visit.
How long should an SEO test run?
Long enough to cover the normal cycle of your traffic plus the time Google takes to recrawl the changed pages. For most sites that is weeks rather than days, and ending early is the most common way a test produces a confident wrong answer.
What should I test first?
Titles and first paragraphs on a template with many similar pages. It is the cheapest change to make, the fastest to recrawl, and historically the one that produces a readable difference most often.
Do I need a paid testing platform?
Only above a few hundred similar pages. Below that, Search Console plus a spreadsheet does the same arithmetic, and the discipline of writing the hypothesis down matters more than the software.
Can I test whether a change affects AI answers?
You can measure before and after by asking the same buyer questions in the same apps on a schedule and recording who is named. That is a repeated measurement rather than a controlled experiment, and it is still far better than assuming.
