Best SEO tools for a small business compared, and the three you can skip
A small business has one real constraint and it is not software. Here is the stack that costs nothing, the one purchase worth making, and the three categories to walk past.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026
Almost every small business that asks which SEO tool to buy has the same three actual problems: nobody has read what Google already says about their site, the site has a handful of pages that do not match what customers search for, and nothing links to them. Software fixes none of those three, which is why the honest answer starts with a free stack and one purchase.
The criterion: does the tool answer a question a business of this size is actually asking, and can an owner act on the answer this week? A dashboard nobody opens is not a tool.
The free stack, with published limits
| Tool | What it answers | Published limit, read 21 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | What people type to reach you, and whether your pages are indexed | Free for any property you can verify. Search types documented as web in text based or multimodal form, image, video and news. |
| Google Business Profile | Local visibility, which for most small businesses is most of the opportunity | Free, and it is the strongest local lever you control directly. |
| A free crawl | What is actually on the site, including pages you forgot | Screaming Frog publishes a free crawl limit of 500 URLs, which is more pages than most small business sites have. |
| PageSpeed Insights | Whether the pages are fast enough, in field data | Free per URL. Run it on templates rather than only the homepage. |
| One SEO plugin, if on WordPress | Titles, descriptions, sitemaps, index control | Yoast and Rank Math both publish free versions covering this. Install one, not two. |
| Keyword Planner | Whether anybody searches for what you were going to write | Free with an Ads account. One grouped figure per normalised set. |
The one purchase worth making
One month of a third party link and keyword index, used in a concentrated week on your three real local competitors. That is the only question nothing free answers, and after the week you will have a page list and a link list rather than a subscription. For a local business the alternative purchase is grid rank measurement instead, because local position changes with proximity and no free tool reports it: BrightLocal publishes a geo grid for up to five keywords and local ranking for up to 100 keywords against four competitors on its Track tier, priced by locations managed, read 21 October 2026.
The three to skip
An all in one suite on an annual plan, because you will use two of twelve modules and the entry tiers are sized around five websites and five hundred tracked keywords, which is a scale you do not have. A rank tracker, because Search Console gives average position free and twenty phrases checked weekly is the whole requirement. And anything sold as an SEO score or a grade, because the checks underneath it are free and public and the number is the vendor's own weighting.
There is a fourth thing to be careful with rather than skip: AI content subscriptions. Publishing more was rarely the constraint. If nothing links to you and your three service pages do not say what customers search for, more posts will not move anything.
The one check none of these tools runs, and who sells it
Every tool on this page measures a search engine. None of them measures the other place your buyer now asks, which is an assistant: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose an answer for each asker, naming some businesses and not others, and there is no index a crawler can read to find out whose name came up. For a small business this is often the most honest place to spend a measurement budget, because one owner asking the five apps their own buyer question takes twenty minutes and costs nothing, and tells you something no SEO tool reports.
AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else. We are not an SEO tool and we are not in the ranking above, because a buyer who came here for a crawler or a keyword index should buy one of the tools named above instead. What we do is ask your buyer question in all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. Our own figures, from the rendered text of our llms.txt read on 21 October 2026: one credit is one buyer question on one app once, most checks cost one credit and a Claude check costs three because Claude costs more to run. The published US floor is $149 a month for SEO Start, and that same file says SEO Start watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand harvest rather than an engine watch. The first tier that watches the five engines is Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. A managed option is published in rupees only, Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month at a three month minimum, so we are not going to convert it for you.
Where the tools on this page beat us, plainly. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on 21 October 2026, tracks prompts on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. AI Mode and Copilot are two surfaces we do not read at all, and its page publishes an overage price of $0.020 per check and the cost of a Claude update at 8 checks, which is a level of unit disclosure worth holding every vendor to, us included. Semrush, whose SEO and AI search pricing page we read the same day, sells AI visibility inside the suite you may already be paying for, with 50 prompts tracked daily and 300 AI visibility reports a day on its Starter tier. Moz now publishes AI Explorer, described on moz.com as showing what the top AI agents say about your brand. If you already pay one of those three, their module is the cheaper route and you should take it. We are the single purpose option for somebody who does not want a suite.
The four week plan, which is free
No competitor price table is reproduced on this page. What is quoted instead is the published limit that sets a tier, because a limit is the vendor's own statement of what you get and it does not move with the country you are reading from. That matters more than it sounds: on 21 October 2026 a fetch of one vendor's US pricing page from this machine returned Indian rupee prices, because the request left from an Indian address. A 200 response can still be the wrong page.
Week one: verify Search Console, read the query list, and write down the five phrases you appear for and nearly rank. Week two: fix the Business Profile properly, including hours, categories and photos, and ask three customers for reviews. Week three: crawl the site free, fix the broken links and the missing titles, and rewrite the service page that does not use customer words. Week four: buy the one month of an index, do the competitor week, and write the list. That is a complete programme and the only line item is one month of one subscription.
If you are deciding between doing this and hiring somebody: the best marketing agency for a small business, the three retainer shapes and the question that decides it. On 21 October 2026 we read every link we could see on this site, 2,169 page bodies in all, against 2,082 live pages, and 935 of them, 44.9 percent, had no inbound link from any of those bodies. That figure is an upper bound rather than a count. No other page on this site links to the one above.
Questions small businesses ask about SEO tools
What is the best SEO tool for a small business?
Search Console, and it is free. The best paid one is a single month of a link and keyword index, bought when you have a specific competitive question.
Can I do SEO without any paid tools?
Yes, nearly all of it. The one gap is competitor link and keyword data.
How much should a small business spend on SEO tools?
Less than most spend. One month of one index per quarter is a defensible budget, and the rest is better spent on the pages themselves.
Which is more important, local or general SEO?
If customers come to you or you travel to them, local, by a wide margin. The Business Profile usually outperforms everything else and costs nothing.
Do I need an SEO tool if I have a web developer?
You need Search Console access and a crawl. Those two give a developer a work list, which is more useful than a subscription.
