Best SEO tools for Excel and Google Sheets compared, and the four jobs a spreadsheet still does better

A spreadsheet is the only SEO tool that joins two datasets nobody else will join for you. Here is what each add-in and connector publishes, which platform each one runs on, and the four jobs worth doing in a sheet rather than a dashboard.

Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026

The criterion on this page, applied to everybody including us. A spreadsheet tool is worth buying for one reason: it joins data that no single dashboard holds. So rank on what each one connects to and on which platform it runs, both of which the vendor publishes or does not. Formula count is not a criterion, and neither is the number of functions.

The four jobs worth doing in a sheet

One. Joining Search Console to your own business data. Queries and clicks on one side, revenue or enquiries per page on the other. No SEO platform has your revenue per page, so no platform can do this join, and it is the single most useful analysis most sites never run.

Two. Comparing two crawls. Export a crawl from before a release and one from after, join on URL, and look at the rows where the title, canonical or status code moved. A crawler shows you one crawl beautifully and the diff is where the bug is.

Three. Bulk preparing a change. Three hundred rewritten title tags with a character count column and a conditional format for anything over the limit. This is a sheet job and it always will be.

Four. Sampling for a human to read. Pick thirty URLs at random per template, open them, and write down what you see. Every automated audit gets this wrong and a sheet makes it a five minute job.

What each option publishes, read 21 October 2026

OptionWhat its own page statesPlatform
SeoTools for Excelseotoolsforexcel.com describes itself as "SEO tools plugin & API connectors for Excel", published by Bosma Interactive AB, and says it "provides you with over 100 helper functions". Named functions include HtmlH1, HtmlTitle and CheckBacklink, plus a Spider crawler. Connectors named on its own pages include Google Analytics, Majestic, Google Sheets, Google Search Indexing, Google Suggest, Bing Webmaster Tools, Bing Ads, Bing Maps, DataForSEO, BuiltWith, Advanced Web Ranking, LinkedIn, the eBay Browse API and GA4, and you can build your own in an XML format. The page states no free tier and no usage limit, and publishes no price there either.Windows, by implication rather than by statement. The only platform signal on the page is a testimonial from Majestic's Dixon Jones reading "If you use Excel on Windows, SEOTools for Excel has no equal." Mac support is not addressed, which is the gap to ask about.
Google Search Console, exported by handFree for any property you can verify. Sixteen months of history, with the queries each page appeared for and what people did next.Any. The export is a CSV and the UI caps rows, which is the reason to move to the API rather than the UI for anything serious.
The Search Console API into SheetsFree, with Google's own published quota. It is the route that removes the UI row cap and makes a monthly refresh automatic.Any, and it is the recommendation for anybody on a Mac, because it needs no desktop add-in at all.
A crawler exportscreamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider publishes "The free version is restricted to crawling up to 500 URLs in a single crawl", with downloads for Windows, macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel, and Linux. sitebulb.com/pricing publishes "10,000 URLs per audit" on Lite and "500,000 URLs per audit" on Pro.Both publish desktop builds. Sitebulb's FAQ says Pro "runs on Windows or Mac".
A platform APIahrefs.com/pricing publishes "100,000 crawl credits" on Lite and "1,500,000 crawl credits" on Advanced, with "1 user included" on each tier and "Add 2 more users at $40/mo each" on Lite. Its Report Builder add-on publishes "50 reports" and "500 total widgets".Any, since it is an HTTP call. The cost is credits rather than software.

So the ranking, on the stated criterion

The Search Console API into Google Sheets first. It connects the one dataset nobody else can give you, it is free, it runs on any machine, and it is the only option here with no platform question attached. For the first of the four jobs above, which is the job that changes decisions, it is also the only option that works at all.

SeoTools for Excel second, and first for anybody who already lives in Excel on Windows. Its connector list is the broadest published in this set by a wide margin, and the eBay Browse API connector alone makes it the only option here that reaches a marketplace. Its weakness on this page's criterion is disclosure: no free tier, no usage limit and no platform statement on the page we read.

Crawler exports third, because the join is manual and the crawl ceilings are published, so you know in advance whether the export will contain your whole site.

This page ranks nothing fourth. A platform API is a different purchase that happens to end in a sheet.

Two things to set up once and never think about again

A character count column on every title and description you write. Not a limit, a count, because the real constraint is pixels and the count is the proxy that catches the obvious failures.

A tab that holds your URL list and nothing else. Every other tab references it. Half the time a spreadsheet analysis goes wrong, it is because two tabs hold two slightly different URL lists.

The dataset no spreadsheet can import yet

Everything above joins data that somebody recorded. The other place your buyer now asks is an assistant, and nothing is recorded there at all: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose an answer for each person, name some businesses and not others, and keep no index a connector could call. There is no API to point a sheet at, because there is no stored list of who got named.

AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else, and we are not in the ranking above, because somebody who came here for an Excel add-in should buy SeoTools for Excel or wire up the Search Console API. We are not a spreadsheet tool. What we do is ask your buyer's question in all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named, which turns the thing that was never recorded into rows you can put in a sheet. From the rendered text of our pricing page, read 21 October 2026: "One credit is one buyer question, asked on one AI app, once", "Most checks use one credit", "A Claude check uses 3, because Claude costs us more to run". From our llms.txt the same day: SEO Start at $149 a month watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand-harvest tier rather than an engine watch, and Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month is the cheapest plan that reads all five surfaces.

And the honest limit for a spreadsheet person. Our own pricing page renders a "Visibility API" on two plans only, GEO Scale and Everything. If pulling the readings into your own sheet by API is the point, that is the tier you need, and the plans below it are a dashboard. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read 21 October 2026, publishes its unit economics more precisely than we do, "1 check per platform, location and update" at "$0.020/check" with "Claude consumes 8 checks per update", and covers AI Mode and Copilot, two surfaces we do not read at all.

For the job a spreadsheet is usually reached for and should not be, which is checking thousands of URLs by hand: bulk SEO tools compared, for checking thousands of URLs at once. On 21 October 2026 we read 2,411 page bodies on this site against 2,325 live pages and 971 of them, 41.8 percent, carried no inbound link from any body we could read, which is an upper bound rather than a count. We measured that target specifically: no other page on this site links to that one.

Questions about SEO tools for Excel

Does SeoTools for Excel work on a Mac?

Its own page does not say, and the only platform reference on it is a testimonial about Excel on Windows. Treat it as a Windows product until the vendor states otherwise, and use the Search Console API into Google Sheets instead if you are on macOS.

Is Google Sheets good enough, or do I need Excel?

Sheets is better for the API work because the connection is built in and shared. Excel is better past a few hundred thousand rows, and that is the only reason most SEO teams still need it.

Why not just use the platform's dashboard?

Because the dashboard cannot hold your revenue per page, and that column is what turns a traffic report into a decision.

What is the first join to build?

Search Console clicks per page against enquiries or orders per page, for the last three months. It usually shows that a third of the traffic is on pages that convert nothing, which changes what you write next.
