Best Shopify SEO apps compared, and the four store problems no app can fix
Shopify controls more of your URLs and templates than most store owners realise, which decides what an SEO app can and cannot do. Here is what each kind of app actually changes, and the four problems that are the platform rather than the app.
Published by AI Knows Us · Updated 22 October 2026
Shopify SEO apps split into three jobs and the app listings blur them: on page editing, technical fixes the platform allows, and content or markup additions. What decides whether an app helps you is not its feature list but which of your problems is actually the platform.
The criterion on this page: can the app change the thing it claims to fix, given what Shopify lets an app touch? It is answerable before you install anything, and it rules out a surprising share of the category.
The three jobs an app can do
| Job | What a good app gives you | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Bulk on page editing | Titles, descriptions and alt text edited across hundreds of products from one screen, with templates and variables | This is the real value for a catalogue of any size, and it is a time saving rather than a ranking feature. |
| Structured data | Product, breadcrumb and organisation markup injected and kept valid as the theme changes | Validate the output yourself in the Rich Results Test. Several apps inject markup that validates on the product page and not on the collection page. |
| Broken links and redirects | A list of 404s with one click redirects, which matters because deleting a product leaves a URL behind | Shopify has its own URL redirect feature, so check what the app adds beyond it before paying monthly for it. |
Yoast publishes a dedicated Yoast SEO for Shopify product alongside its WordPress plugins, read 21 October 2026, which is worth knowing because most Shopify SEO advice is written about WordPress plugins that do not run on Shopify at all.
The four problems that are the platform, not the app
One, URL structure. Shopify imposes its own path prefixes for products and collections, and no app rewrites that. Two, the same product reachable through several collection paths, which is a canonical question the platform mostly handles and which apps sometimes make worse by adding their own tags. Three, theme speed, which is a theme and app weight problem: every app you install adds script, and an SEO app that slows the store has taken away more than it gave. Four, thin collection pages, which is a content problem a human has to write.
So the honest order is: audit the theme and the app load first, fix what the platform actually lets you fix, and install an SEO app for the bulk editing if your catalogue is large enough to need it.
How to test an app before you trust it
Install it, change one product, then view the source of that product page and the collection page it sits in. Check the title, the canonical tag and the markup with the Rich Results Test. Then crawl the store free, up to 500 URLs on Screaming Frog's published free limit as read on 21 October 2026, which covers most small stores including every collection and tag page the platform generated. If the app did what it said on both page types, keep it. If it only worked on the product page, you know its real scope.
Also measure the speed cost. Run the store's product template through PageSpeed Insights before and after installing, on field data where you have it rather than a single lab run.
The one check none of these tools runs, and who sells it
Every tool on this page measures a search engine. None of them measures the other place your buyer now asks, which is an assistant: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose an answer for each asker, naming some businesses and not others, and there is no index a crawler can read to find out whose name came up. For a store this is the question of whether an assistant names your shop when somebody asks where to buy a category of product, and no Shopify app reports on it.
AI Knows Us sells that one measurement and nothing else. We are not an SEO tool and we are not in the ranking above, because a buyer who came here for a crawler or a keyword index should buy one of the tools named above instead. What we do is ask your buyer question in all five apps on a schedule and record which businesses were named. Our own figures, from the rendered text of our llms.txt read on 21 October 2026: one credit is one buyer question on one app once, most checks cost one credit and a Claude check costs three because Claude costs more to run. The published US floor is $149 a month for SEO Start, and that same file says SEO Start watches 0 buyer questions on 0 engines, so it is a demand harvest rather than an engine watch. The first tier that watches the five engines is Growth at $299 with 100 buyer questions and 1,200 scheduled answers a month. A managed option is published in rupees only, Rs 88,499 to Rs 2,35,999 a month at a three month minimum, so we are not going to convert it for you.
Where the tools on this page beat us, plainly. Ahrefs Brand Radar, read on 21 October 2026, tracks prompts on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. AI Mode and Copilot are two surfaces we do not read at all, and its page publishes an overage price of $0.020 per check and the cost of a Claude update at 8 checks, which is a level of unit disclosure worth holding every vendor to, us included. Semrush, whose SEO and AI search pricing page we read the same day, sells AI visibility inside the suite you may already be paying for, with 50 prompts tracked daily and 300 AI visibility reports a day on its Starter tier. Moz now publishes AI Explorer, described on moz.com as showing what the top AI agents say about your brand. If you already pay one of those three, their module is the cheaper route and you should take it. We are the single purpose option for somebody who does not want a suite.
Before you add another app
No competitor price table is reproduced on this page. What is quoted instead is the published limit that sets a tier, because a limit is the vendor's own statement of what you get and it does not move with the country you are reading from. That matters more than it sounds: on 21 October 2026 a fetch of one vendor's US pricing page from this machine returned Indian rupee prices, because the request left from an Indian address. A 200 response can still be the wrong page.
Count the apps already installed and what each one adds to the page. The highest return SEO work available to most Shopify stores is removing two apps nobody uses, which is free and will not appear in any app store listing.
On judging any Shopify app against what your particular store actually needs, including the store specifics that decide whether it works at all: the five store specifics that decide whether a Shopify app works. On 21 October 2026 we read every link we could see on this site, 2,169 page bodies in all, against 2,082 live pages, and 935 of them, 44.9 percent, had no inbound link from any of those bodies. That figure is an upper bound rather than a count. No other page on this site links to the one above.
Questions about Shopify SEO apps
Does Shopify need an SEO app?
Not for a small catalogue. Shopify lets you edit titles, descriptions and alt text natively and has its own redirects. An app earns its place when editing by hand stops being feasible.
Which app is best for structured data?
Pick on validated output rather than the listing. Install, then validate the markup yourself on a product page and a collection page, because that is where they differ.
Can an app change Shopify URLs?
No. The path structure is the platform's and apps cannot rewrite it. Treat any listing that implies otherwise with care.
Do SEO apps slow a store down?
Some do, and that is a real cost. Measure the product template before and after installing and keep the field data.
What is the highest return Shopify SEO work?
Usually writing real collection page copy and removing unused apps. Neither is sold in the app store.
